I'm not into Nikon system, but "complaining" to have some banding effect when cropping at 200% and +6 ev exposure compensation... did anyone ever had to did that kind of thing ? if yes, what kind of shot was it ?
It's not something that will effect many situations but if we dont make note of it THEN what kind of comments do we get? Besides it's always good to see what's going on behind the images. The requirement for hybrid AF sensor based systems does have an effect on image quality, and I find that pretty interesting.
I agree, I think the Z7 is getting far more criticism for this borderline hypothetical banding than it deserves. Regarding the “what if” where the flash fails right at the “decisive moment,” well I think that’s the photographer’s fault, period. Relying on a camera to salvage an image underexposed by 6 full stops is more likely to breed sloppy technique than it is to be a potential life-saving feature, on balance. Nothing about photography is guaranteed-but the way this camera’s 6 EV correction is criticized, along with having “only” one card slot (I’d take one XQD card over two SD slots any day)- it sounds as if we’ve got the world’s best up and coming photogs right here, on TH-cam and on DPR. I don’t even shoot Nikon, but it looks like a heck of an effort, taking perhaps even more flack than what Canon’s employees cobbled together on arts and crafts day, with their EOS R.
My experience coincides with the test. A quite usable camera with only a few weaknesses. The weather protection, however, is low. The robustness of the camera leads to believe it is weather sealed. Especially in the holes of the microphone at the top, water drips in quickly. The manual/operating instructions says, the operating conditions must be observed: “Temperature: 0 to 40°C/32 to 104°F; humidity: 85% or less (no condensation)”. Rain means 100% humidity! The warranty expires when used in rain or high humidity. The same values apply to Nikon Z6. Finest water droplets penetrate thru all sockets and the components (for example the circuit board) are beginning to corrode slowly. This does not lead immediately to the failure of the camera but to their creeping death. At the photokina this was confirmed. I use a tripod when it rains, put a plastic bag over the camera and operate it with a waterproof smartphone. Because the Z7 was not designed as a professional camera, there is unfortunately no portrait grip. With portrait grip I could operate as usual. With the Z7 I must dislocate when working in portrait mode. A long photo shoot in portrait format, especially with heavy lenses, is not possible. In the case of close ups, the autofocus sometimes hits the nose, the hair, but not always the eyes. Now I take pictures with aperture 4 or 5.6. So it is not noticeable that the autofocus is something wrong. All in all, a nice camera for anyone who wants to shoot some pictures at Christmas and it has a reasonable price.
I've been a Nikon user since the D90 and I'm really happy that Nikon has nailed their first full frame mirrorless. But I'm afraid I'll be switching to the A7iii because I primarily shoot videos.
Super excited to be picking up my Nikon Z6 from store on Monday. I HAVE sold my D800 to update to this camera. I believe I’m one of if not the first to get this camera in the UK.
Hope Jordan feels better soon. Can't wait to see the video rundown. It feels like...well A) both Canon and Nikon are either holding features back, or super-rough in their implementations so far. Canon, rough. Nikon, great build, but they can't nail the focus yet. ...and seemingly, Canon's got issues so far too. Early adopters, beware...as usual. Give these guys a gen, THEN you'll see the real meat, I'm guessing. B) Nikon seems like they have a better featured, better fleshed out body. Besides the buttons on the front, seems far more solid than Canon's non-weather-sealed, touch-pad...no IBIS body. BUT...they're winning the early lens game. Apparently Japan, who has a large Canon installed base, is already eating it up comparatively, but Nikon might just be too late to the, admittedly, very early punch. And this isn't even considering video where Canon has some pretty annoying UI issues, and 'dat crop on the sensor. ...and C) As a crop guy waiting to jump, this is all popcorn viewing as far as I'm concerned, especially until Panny releases in March. In another generation...1-2 years out hopefully, I think it'll be a very exciting time to jump in. Until then, GREAT JOB you two, as always.
Thank you for the review. As a non-professional photographer, don't mind single card. Christian Samsel Like I said...OR use Nikon F mount lenses which are known to be fully supported. Using third party lenses at this point is a ‘your mileage may vary’ situation. I’m sure at a later date sigma and tamron lenses will be back to fully functional like they are on F mount bodies. For now I think it’s questionable and not consistent.
Being limited to only Nikkor lenses for usable, reliable AF is a huge con for the Z series of cameras compared to their F-mount DSLRs. Lots of photographers shoot with 3rd party lenses. Personally I wish they tested some Tamron and Tokina lenses as well.
@@KyleClements Sigma already released a firmware update but maybe more will come. Tamron announced they'll have new firmware for some lenses to make them compatible with the Z. Personally, I think for the time being SOME 3rd party lenses will be fine (but just how well they work compared to Nikon F or Z mount, I don't know) but newer AF-S and Z mount lenses would be the safe bet. The system is only just over a month old. The F mount has had decades for 3rd party manufacturers to come up with good/compatible lenses...so I think it's just a matter of time before Sigma/Tamron lenses work as well we're accustomed to on DSLRs or other more mature mirrorless systems.
We also shot tests with the 24-70mm F4 S at 70mm wide open. It had pretty much the exact same hit ratio as the Sigma 85mm F1.4, but the Sigma's shallower DOF made it easier to see when focus hit or missed for the video, so we used those sequences.

These New Nikon Camera's are small and compact but I also think they should have a flip out screen like on there Nikon D5500/5600 series and also it should have two SD Card slots which use the same style SD Card style like on the Nikon D750. And also unlimited recording time limit in 4K like on the Panasonic GH5
Can you please do a complete updated review of the Z7 now that there are firm updates that took care of the original autofocus problem, face detection, etc. Thanks
Nikon shouldn't have done such a priced/high resolution camera if all of the issues in the main areas were not solved. At this price tag you expect better performances. You can accept them in the Z6. Canon did not do this mistake. Panasonic will follow Nikon's strategy and we'll see if the S1R will shine in ALL of the main areas or not. Was Nikon intention that of tackling Sony on the A7R? Strategically is fine, but customer satisfaction wise... Don't get me wrong, the Z7 is a great performer for some kinds of photography but it's not an allrounder. And at this price tag it should have been. Good choice to have tested lenses other than native because this is what most users have already in their bag! Thank you for your great usual job and good decision to make a separate and deeper review of the video features.
You guys do the best camera review videos out there. Just the facts, none of the hyperbole clickbait that some the other "big" names are putting out. Thanks for a nice review. I don't shoot Nikon but it sure is nice to see another honest review of the great stuff, the OK stuff, and the not so good stuff.
Full frame just feels like a craze. The video is crazy good on the gh5. Photos looks just as good on your g7 and g85 videos. Weakness seems to be low light, but I feel photographers should be looking to light instead of artificial iso and larger glass
GH5 was filming this episode and others just for the fact it has dual card slots for redundancy. (Amongst all the rest of the fantastic and rich features of the GH5.)
The problem of this camera is d850. Nikon shooters have a chose between this camera and world best ever DSLR. With canon similar situation. 5d4 is not world best ever DSLR, but its great all around workhorse, and you can shoot annything on 5d4, and is pretty cheap on many markets with real street price very close to Eos R. (In my country now its around $2300 !!!official!!!). But Eos R is not workhorse, its funny garbage.
Chris; health & safety warning-that footwear looks totally inappropriate for the snowy outdoor terrain! Nathan; Just keep your D800, you are getting awesome shots with it! I believe the D850 is continually sold out/on back order in the U.S so I think that tells ya something. I have the D7500 with 9 F-Mount lenses from Nikon, Tamron, Sigma & Tokina and it works great for me shooting all sorts from wildlife, landscape, low-light, portraits etc. Even the 4K video is good with some tweaks to settings. I am waiting for Panasonic to smash it with their 2 FF mirrorless cameras soon, though I suspect they won't be cheap either!
Hello! between the 850 or z7 which would you use for architectural photography? I have a d7000 camera and my lenses are DX 10-24,55-300 and 50 mm. I really need to go to the next level and have been saving for the next step!I was sure to jump to 850 and invest in the lenses, but I find the Z7 and I don't know what to think? My primary use is architecture, landscape, and urban photography
Regarding the focussing not being on par with SLR - from a technical perspective it currently never will. The optical path in a SLR allows the system to work out which way the lens needs to be moved to bring an out of focus target back into focus. Mirrorless does not allow for this. The system basically has to try both ways a small amount and see which goes better. Without a breakthrough in how focus testing works on mirrorless, these will unfortunately never even equal SLR speed and solid lock on moving targets. What has already been acheived with mirrorless focus speed is pretty amazing.
Was the camera used with the native lenses at all in the studio? I used a loaner Z7 plus the S 24-70 f/4 and FTZ adaptor and found the tracking was much better with the Z7 than my D800. My only Sigma to try was a 50mm 1.4 and found it was a lot slower to focus and with my Nikon glass it was surely better than the D800, which is not as sure focusing as a D850, but nothing else is either. It was really good with the 70-200 2.8 and 85 1.4G and 1.8G but when switching to the S lens, it was faster. The new 24-70 f/4 is sharper and far better in the corners than any 24-70 2.8 I have used. I tried it with my 24-70 2.8 G and E versions and there was virtually zero distortion or sharpness fall off in the corners. I get the impression using non-Nikon glass is going to be a compromise since it is clearly optimized for Nikon S and F mount. My 15-30 2.8 Tamron G2 which works so well on all my cameras did not meter correctly and did not AF at all, the only lens I tried that just didn't work. The image quality was excellent, and I have no doubt it could replace my D800. I am not a sports or action shooter except for dance...ballet and the AF was no problem during a dress rehearsal. I was more impressed with the camera, and its solid focus lock than I was expecting after all the negative youtube chatter. I belong to a few photography forum communities and on those the comments from actual users tend to be a lot more positive than the youtube gurus who all seem to be pushing the same 2 brands, possibly because their income is based on clicks and referrals. I am pretty sure I will get a Z7 but the Z6 is tempting due to its bargain price.
Nice low-key review Chris. It’s clear that the Z7’s poor continuous AF performance will be its unfortunate legacy as I don’t think firmware tweaks can save it. I’d like to see you test the Z6’s continuous AF with native glass though...if there’s no significant improvement in AF performance the only thing I can conclude is that Nikon’s engineers really messed this time... which is quite unusual.
An excellent video! I am strongly considering going with the Nikon Z7 (from the Fuji X-System, only because I print large.), and have 2 questions please...Are you able to upload images (jpegs/nef) to a computer via a USB-C cable, INSTEAD of using anXQD reader? (In other words, leaving the card in camera at all times, like I can do with my X-T3.) And, is the Z7 as "poorly designed" (i.e., card door) as one "angry" TH-camr leads us to believe? Thank you!
Shame about the AF performance . Will be looking at the next iteration to see if they address it and the card slot as well . Will stick to my D810 and Sony A7III for now .
After watching a bunch of Z6/7 reviews there's something that consistently comes up - "keep in mind this is Nikon's first mirrorless and it's just many things to nail right out of the gate". That's true yes, but of course these cameras don't exist in a vacuum. For any Nikon user who's been itching to switch to mirrorless and was hoping they will match Sony's offerings, "it's a 1st gen" is a poor excuse. There are obviously many other considerations (glass, form factor, etc.), but Nikon should've done more.
Nice, balanced review. Thanks! Everyone has their own priorities and needs. For me, the most important things in a series of stills cameras like ergonomics, build quality, and compatibility with a sea of used lenses are all there and will continue to be in future versions. The things that are nice, but not essential to me, like the eye tracking are not there yet but can be brought along.
Thanks! One of the best reviewers out there. Just a note. What focus mode was used when the continuous frames taken with the model walking? I am surprised that even walking is an issue (all frames not in focus) when I haven seen many samples of z7 in sports frame taken with in focus shots
Just when I convinced myself the single card slot was not a deal breaker, the continuous af performance means I’ll be sticking with my D500 for a little longer! ( still a brilliant camera so I can wait for D7 mk2?} 🤨
How can you expect reverse engineered glass to work flawlessly with the new mount? This should've been done with native Z lenses or Nikon f mount glass to get a better idea.
Curious recurring noise pattern in Chris and Jordan's pics - clipped white luminance noise moving vertically down the image, and a lot of the backgrounds are just clipped to white, coupled with very poor blue saturation in the skies.
Great video! Very informative as always! :) I loved the segment with Nathan, love portrait work. And, Nathan is so sweet! Looks like he belongs on Vikings, love that look that so many young guys are rocking these days (great haircut for lesbians, too, thankfully don't see girls with the beard, though ;) ).
Not a great idea to use log with only 8bit Sony video But Nikon gives you log as well, *AND* 10bit 4K output! ;-) A massive massive leap forward over Sony
@@SoundSpeeding But d800e video does not have such good bitrate sir. Only z series can go 10 bit. Even d750 wont able to catch log file 50mb bitrate of sony a7ii at 1080p.
@@fzeo the D800e is an older camera, so it was a pretty fair DSLR for video in its time but you can't really compare it with current cameras in nearly 2019! Thus you should think about the current options from Nikon, which means D7500 / D500 / D850 / Z6 / Z7 Or heck, even the D750 you mentioned which is older is still a very nice 1080 DSLR! Is a much more lightweight file which can match up with the dynamic range and look of a BMPCC Oh and also the D800 can indeed do higher bit rates.... :-) www.eoshd.com/2014/04/nikon-d800-hacked-50mbits-high-bitrate-recording-option/
@@SoundSpeeding d800e 50mb bitrate is 3rd party and not official by nikon. if it official, then they should put it into d750 and d850. yes, it is old camera yet the image is superb.
@@fzeo exactly... its image is superb, which is what is really important! And the NikonHacker upgrades are pretty straightforward to do if you know what you're doing. I wouldn't shy away from that. Or just buy yourself the compact Atomos Ninja V for cheap and record the 422 output from the D800
I would say the biggest issue with this camera is the price. At that price you expect things like backlit buttons, and dual cardslots like on the D850. Other disappointments is the tracking mode that it seams to have inherited from the Nikon 1 series. Just like on Nikon 1 it is far too fiddly to turn on and off.
please redo the tracking test (with the same model would be great) . I think it is unfair having done it in while it was snowing. and having used an adapter and a non Nikon lens introduced far too many mechanical, non Nikon variables to name the test valid.
This is the test we chose to show for the video, but Chris and I (as well as the DPReview editors) have been running tests for weeks with native and adapted lenses. The performance shown in this video lines up with those experiences, but you can certainly read about it in more detail in the full DPReview Review.
DPReview seems to be a little kinder in it's reviews than CSTV. does anyone really want to buy a camera that cannot get one shot in focus while tracking. I guess a landscape photographer would. but the dynamic range is better on the D850, I guess a studio photographer might if they never shoot to much movement. I really hope that Nikon kicks it in to high gear and gets some firmware updates out fast that improve some things, and also a second generation within a year from now. along with multiple lenses in one year. Nikon says it is their plan to beat Canon and Sony. but so far they are far from doing that. but I am rooting for Nikon to succeed and there is allot to like about their first try. but both Nikon and Canon should have been developing their mirrorless technology for the last 5 years like Sony has been doing, instead of denying that mirrorless was the future. because now they are competing against Sony who has a fully developed camera that has no problem tracking, has eye auto focus and an almost full lens lineup. and unlike Canon and Nikon. they share information with Sigma and Tamron and Zeiss so they can make 3rd party lenses for their cameras without having to crack a code.
Enjoyable review guys, always nice to see you!
Miss you Gordon! Looking forward to the next podcast review!

I love the cold openings - makes my day :-D Love your channel!!
This video's got it all: Nathan Elson, great GH5 showcase, awesome model and Chris wasn't so bad either. :) Hope Jordan gets better soon!
32C here in Queensland today Chris, just thought you might like to know...oh,and by the way, so good to hear it pronounced Zed,as it should be.
Krispy Blue Absolutely! That’s precisely what I hear from my native Japanese speaking spouse.
Full frame just feels like a craze. The video is crazy good on the gh5. Photos looks just as good on your g7 and g85 videos. Weakness seems to be low light, but I feel photographers should be looking to light instead of artificial iso and larger glass
The real hero of this video are those GH5 colors! Hot dang!!
Why would anyone buy anything but the GH5 for video? This footage looks fantastic.
Because fujifilm x-t3...
Totally agreed. Having the D850, the Z7 hasn't intrigued me in the slightest
@@sammadonline And no real Batterypack with extra joystick af on etc if I am correct not even connections for it or am I wrong here.
So I stay longer with my D800 and later future D810 or D850 .
No it's the A73 that's the problem - I'm a Nikon shooter and this camera just isn't as good overall.
@@markshirley01 and a7RIII
what's up with those inconsistent audio level in this video XD
Awesome review!! Thank you!!
It’d be amazing if you could do 3D focusing on the Fuji. Their af is great tho
winter is here..
I am waiting for Panasonic to smash it with their 2 FF mirrorless cameras soon, though I suspect they won't be cheap either!
it's 13 degrees here at nigh and around 20 mid-day (celsius) and we're freezing
Hello! between the 850 or z7 which would you use for architectural photography?
Daniela is one of those models who completely lights up when she smiles. Not so much when she is serious :)
Beautiful results on those studio portraits.... mostly down to very skilful lighting :)
Thank you!
I enjoyed this review well done and that photographer took some gorgeous images with this camera as well.
Such a well filmed review! It would be great to see an episode on how you film an episode.
Looks like a good start ... now in 3-4 generations they might have a killer product.
I envy all this snow, it's already hot af here in Brazil.
Amazing review guys!
for 3d autofocus you need DSLR which have a specific sensor just for autofocus .
Please get a review of the Z6 in before Christmas guys.
Working on it right now!
@@thatjordandrake hero Jordan 🇨🇦
Thanks! One of the best reviewers out there. Just a note. What focus mode was used when the continuous frames taken with the model walking? I am surprised that even walking is an issue (all frames not in focus) when I haven seen many samples of z7 in sports frame taken with in focus shots
Canada is cold who would have guessed that
Just when I convinced myself the single card slot was not a deal breaker, the continuous af performance means I’ll be sticking with my D500 for a little longer! ( still a brilliant camera so I can wait for D7 mk2?} 🤨
How can you expect reverse engineered glass to work flawlessly with the new mount? This should've been done with native Z lenses or Nikon f mount glass to get a better idea.
Daniela hates bras !
+dennytenny A+ comment
Curious recurring noise pattern in Chris and Jordan's pics - clipped white luminance noise moving vertically down the image, and a lot of the backgrounds are just clipped to white, coupled with very poor blue saturation in the skies.
.. and in conclusion, the GH5 video footage looks fantastic.
GH5 is still a workhorse!
Great video! Very informative as always! :)
I loved the segment with Nathan, love portrait work. And, Nathan is so sweet! Looks like he belongs on Vikings, love that look that so many young guys are rocking these days (great haircut for lesbians, too, thankfully don't see girls with the beard, though ;) ).
I own D800E and I just started a7ii. I still love D800E photo but I need log profile in a7ii for video.
Not a great idea to use log with only 8bit Sony video
But Nikon gives you log as well, *AND* 10bit 4K output! ;-) A massive massive leap forward over Sony
Thus you should think about the current options from Nikon, which means D7500 / D500 / D850 / Z6 / Z7
Or heck, even the D750 you mentioned which is older is still a very nice 1080 DSLR! Is a much more lightweight file which can match up with the dynamic range and look of a BMPCC
Oh and also the D800 can indeed do higher bit rates.... :-)

Thumbed up just for the intro.
I got cold just watching this video.
P.S. Chris, just ditch the strap! ;)
watch the model
I got quite a bit warmer around the 8:37 mark.
What's best camera for filming nature landscapes? Good color quality with 4k?
Jordan and the model!
What do we want?? A review on the BMPCC 4k! When do we want it?? NOW!!!!!
Won't get my copy until the New Year. But we have a very special episode planned for that camera...
Size and weight not withstanding, there isn’t enough to switch from a D850 to the Z7. However, a D850 + Z6 combo would be great.
great review guys, luv
Tamron announced that they solved the problem of 24-70 g2 lenses about af system by using firmware.
I wonder its performance with z7 and ftz adapter.
Waiting for Jordans take on the Z6
I would say the biggest issue with this camera is the price. At that price you expect things like backlit buttons, and dual cardslots like on the D850. Other disappointments is the tracking mode that it seams to have inherited from the Nikon 1 series. Just like on Nikon 1 it is far too fiddly to turn on and off.
I saw Jordon’s face in the video. Heal up man.
Why does this video look out of focus when the Nathan content starts, or soon after?
Very helpful. TY.
I just noticed the rubber piece on the speed dial was missing just like mine fell off after a week of shooting.
Very good video except for the weather 😁👍🏽
What are these gloves called? Super useful in cold weather!
please redo the tracking test (with the same model would be great) .
You know this video will be great when these 2 got nate into the show
And it's snowing there
DPReview seems to be a little kinder in it's reviews than CSTV. does anyone really want to buy a camera that cannot get one shot in focus while tracking.
