What furnace filter should I get for my furnace to operate most efficiently?

  • Choosing a furnace filter is harder than it should be. A furnace filter is a critical part of your furnace and is often forgotten. A clean furnace filter is important to ensure that your furnace is operating at peak performance.
Today you have many choices for your filter. I would say too many. Along with the size of the filter, you have choices for how well it filters the air that flows through it. A big mistake homeowners make is choosing a filter that is too thick and does not allow the air to flow.
Choosing a filter that allows the air flow to go through the furnace is key to efficiency and longevity. Choosing a filter that is rated too high and says it filters everything has the potential to restrict the air flow for your furnace during heating and cooling seasons. Choosing a 4 or 5 inch filter also allows more air to flow through the filter, so if it does get dirty the air can still flow.
There are better options than buying an expensive filter if you want to reduce allergens, viruses, smells or bacteria. Contact Furnace Doctors at furnace-doctors.com or 651-770-1263 to learn more. @furnacedoctorsheatingcooling

I would say at least 95% of the residential installs in my area will have 1" thick filters,

if the filtration system is not sealed, then no matter what the manufacturer is advertising the filter won't do its job. i go with either a 4-5" filter depending on the filter box and what i install. if there are gaps before and after the 1" filter, then a throw away filter is my best option. cheap is best

5 times thicker would mean 5 times more resection ? the higher the number you said the higher the restrictions. What is the merv rating for the 3m? do furnaces say in the manual the max merv rating ?

No the thinker filters have more surface area, means more passages for air to get through. think of it as 5 times longer vs 5 times thicker since the actual thickness of the filter is thinner then a sheet of paper.

    FPR 4 -5 is the same as MERV Ratings 6 - 8
    FPR 6 - 7 is the same as MERV Ratings 8 - 11
FPR 8 - 9 is the same as MERV Rating 11
FPR 10 is the same as MERV Ratings 13
