+shannonsmitification You should own a round one as well man... they are meant for marking, that is why it is called a Scratch Awl... not really meant for reaming out... unlike the square tapered ones, which makes sense when you think about it.
I made a awl from a 1/4 inch screwdriver shaft. I actually feel like its too big for some tasks. I will probably be making a smaller shaft version or an ice pick ... but still on the fence as to which way I want to hop.
+Brian Lasch the size of the shaft is probably a personal taste. 1/4" works for me, Paul Sellers' blog show a very skinny square shaft. But I like the engraver's hold over the screwdriver hold.
Very cool! I have an awl with a wooden knob, where the awl goes through the knob, so if you hit it with a hammer you always hit the steel. Maybe an idea for the next one
Excellent workmanship; I'm sure this will be a tool you will enjoy using for years. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes
Thanks.
Beautiful work John, the Awl, video, and sound, a real joy to watch.
+Sam K Thanks Sam, glad you enjoyed it.
Sweet! Nicely done .. I like the idea of reshaping the Brass Nut.
+Dave Smith Thanks Dave, the brass nut idea I have used with success in the past thought I'd share it with viewers.
Nice project and video. Lots of helpful tips sprinkled throughout.
+Dan The Maker Man Thanks Dan. Sprinkles are the best.
Fantastic build! I love the use of the nut! what a great Idea! Thanks for the inspiration.
+Wood By Wright Thanks James. It's surprisingly hard to find brass ferrules, but the nut is actually cheaper and better.
+John Zhu definitely agree. I'm going to have to try that on my next one.
Great project John!!
+AdventuresInDIY Thanks Chris.

Thanks a bunch.
Good work, greetings from Spain
+Gato Land Thanks and greetings to Spain.
Fantastic. I never paid much attention to awls until I saw the difference a square one made. Now I don't even own a round one.
+shannonsmitification Thanks Shannon. I think square awls drift less too, but that could just be psychological.

If you filed a couple of notches on that internal thread then it would cut into the wood easier.
Nice one John. Hope you're going to be coming up with another tool for my #TOOLMake16 challenge in a couple months
