Why Everyone HATES the London System

  • The London Opening is one of the most despised openings in the online chess world. However, it IS a solid opening, BUT when chess beginners play the London System, they forget to adhere to chess principles as soon as they complete their "London setup." I show an example of how my London opponent forgets about king safety and how to punish it.

    This is a bold statement but London is still an incredible opening even for intermediate players if you're not playing it blindly. I have won a lot of games with london and especially the greek gift sacrifice in it is my favorite.

      Puzzles have trained me to try to sacrifice material when possible and concrete 😅 of course, I mess it up all the time, but it’s important to consider these more creative moves!

    The reason I hate the London is because it's not a beginner opening. If your elo is anything below 1500, this opening is not for you.
    At 700 elo I have a 75% win rate with black when white plays the London, and a 70% lose rate with white when I play the London myself.
    ... after both bishops and knights have been developed, pawn to c3 and castled... that's it.. the opening is over and anybody under 1500 will have no clue on what to do next. The opening provided zero advantages, zero attacks, induced zero mistakes from black, and is just waiting for you to blunder a sequence and rage quit.
    It's not a boring opening, quite the contrary, it's the most rage inducing opening there is, as you will lose so much you'l want to quit chess altogether if you stick to this ridiculous way of starting games as white.

    @5:49 there was also Rxc3 opening the c file as the b pawn is pinned. The knight defends the rook which attacks the queen which now has to move allowing a tempo to double up the rooks. Alternatively there is Kxc3+ forking the king and rook.
    Yours was better. Just black has so many more options than white.

    The Steinitz countergambit is a decent idea against most London players however it is far more potent when done immediately and not after Nf6. So d4 d5 Bf4 c5.
    If you play 1.Nf6(which you should against d4) and want to throw London players off it is better to go for the variation where you skip d5 and immediately go 2.c5! It kinda looks like the modern Benoni move order but because White played Bf4 instead of c4 pushing d5 is no longer possible as the pawn would be undefended, tying the queen down to the pawn's defense. If white takes with dxc4 then you're in a great position. You can either immediately win the pawn back with Qa5+ or just continue normal development with e6 and preparing to recapture with the bishop. If white doesn't take and just continues normal London development with e3 or c3 then 3. Qb6 is a very powerful move for black. If white attempts to queentrade with Qb3 you just take cxd4 and force white to either queentrade or lose a pawn. If they queentrade they open up your rook and you're in a good position. If they don't you just win a pawn and are in a good position.
    The resulting position favours black both at master level and intermediate level. It might be a good idea to study some lines with this move order if you're facing a lot of London system players.

    The problem is not the London opening but the misunderstanding that the London is about putting all the pieces in those predefined squares, no matter what the opponent is doing. The London is a great opening and it is defined by the moves d4, Bf4 (in the same way that the bishop’s opening is e4, Bc4). In the modern theory of London, the rest of the moves depend on the opponent’s moves.

    I understand where you are coming from. But its those players, not the opening. The London gives you a wide variety of possibilities, and it leads to equal, but rich positions. Watch how Carlsen and other Super GMs treat it. Watched Abasov beating Vidith? I use it to train endgames (just play on) and train how to play equal positions. Equal doesnt mean draw. How to beat the London? Learn to play endgames and equal positions😉

    If someone under 1500 opens with d4 I play c5....old Benoni. 100% chance he wanted to go for a London and now can't. I have never lost in the old Benoni under 1500. London players have no clue how to play after move one.

    • @Canarosenna
      @Canarosenna ปีที่แล้ว

      Above 1500 or so, you know how to proceed - simply playing 2. d5 rooting for space advantage in the center, or you can play 2.c3!? and London positions are still possible.

      The TOP move in the master database is 4. Nf3 with 2,564 chess masters playing it. dxc5 is the 4th most popular... with only 199 chess masters opting to play that with white.
