Okay, not really sure what's going on here. McCready, Palmer, Norris, Clark are the names of most of the main characters in 1982 "The Thing". Also bits of dialogue from the movie are used in this story, and they were rescued by the Norwegians? Somebody's pulling a fast one on us.
Dad's cousin used to work on Deception Island as a meteorological surveyor. He used to say to dad something about some volcanic entity and a perpetual feeling of being watched. Excellent narration, and as usual, we need more, more and even more.
Deception Island is a well know tourist attraction. Actually it is the ring of a more or less still active vulcano, At one side it is open to the sea and medium sized ships can enter the caldera. A strech of some 500m sandy beach is still hot from underneath. Until a couple of years ago tourists could dig a pool there and enjoy a bath in the warm water on an Antarctic island. For environmental reasons they don't allow this pleasure anymore. Not far away from the warm beach the British operated a secret military base during WW2, as they were afraid of German U-boats which could eventually hide on Deception Island. But no Germans appeared and after the war the vulcano eruped, so the British had to leave and later decided to abandon their base. You can still see the impressive remains. However, there are no mysteries at the island whatsoever, it's just an interesting place to visit in the Antarctis.
Soooo from 1949+ until the 1990s it was a tourist destination?. WOW! A 500m beach, volcanic caldera, warm water waterholes, sounds like it was a pretty nice place, near Antarctica no less.

Awesome and as an Aussie i have to tell you there is a place in Queensland near the Redcliff peninsula called Deception bay. It is or at least to be a low socio-economic and low rent area and always had a sad vibe ..... I wonder if this happened due to it's name
Well that's a poor attempt at a snobby comment - my family lived there for years but we were not in the "lower socioeconomic" demographic, my parents chose to live there. I received a wonderful education thanks to my blue collar father who worked his backside off so we could have the best life possible. I did well in school, went UQ,graduated with a degree in law and I'm now living at Tenerife. So your implication that people from Deception Bay are "losers" says way more about you than it does about people who grew up there.
I have been waiting for a really good story, and this one was awesome. I wish he would be more out put because this is definitely the best site to hear.
over the many years of me reading about exploration of both poles, Deception island has always had a weird history. one story, assuming i'm not getting it mixed up with others, had something to do with the volcano firing off, and the shock wave killing a few, wounding everyone from a whaling ship.
I like the voice that you use to narrate the stories, whether AI or not , the voice is what makes the stories interesting… lends an air of calm while telling horrific tales. Folks say these tales are false. I believe the truth is hard to swallow. I thoroughly enjoy the tales. So many tales of the unknown and unsolved on this earth. Thank you so much for the research that you do in order to tell these forgotten stories. Have a blessed holiday season.
