I’ve got some tics due to stress and they’ve gotten so bad recently that I spend every day feeling so ashamed for having them and noticing people notice them but somehow him talking about it and seeing him twitching made me feel a whole lot better

i've had tics my entire life and thought it was better until I was on a date an the guys asked why I was doing this thing with my ankle 😀😀. I could only laugh tbh. Everyone that cares can shut up 😃😃. We're trying our best. By the way, i got never in trouble with it, just sometimes asking why I was doing something.

I've only had the panic attacks, the eye twitch and the involuntary leg twitch which sounds better than it is! I think we draw attention to them without knowing because we try to hide it so much that we just look abnormal and unhinged by the time we have finished!! 😂 Billie Eilish has Tourettes as well as Lewis, so we are in an elite group!!! 💖

As someone who was diagnosed with Tourettes in my teens it's so lovely to see someone like Lewis talk about it in the media. I really struggled with the fact that everyone around me made assumptions about it. If you don't swear involuntarily people just assume you are making noises/movements on purpose to annoy those around you. It can be frustrating and in some circumstances, make you think it is under your control even though it isn't.
I'm 35 now and it's gotten much better with time and with cognitive behavioural therapy (I tried prescription drugs but to no avail). I was probably at my worse at 26 like Lewis so I really hope he is as lucky as I was.

I've always wanted to chat with Lew. I've had Tourette's my whole life & present very much like he does…my twitches, small convulsions, taking incredibly deep breaths with anxiety driven snaps and breaks from reality…. have never kept me from being a socially driven animal, but its also pitted me in situations that constantly trigger me and leave me feeling helpless, inferior and outcast from most of my friends and family. It wasn't until I started engaging with cannabis every single day, dropped all other prescription medication & began to focus daily on emotional and mental hygiene (keeping my thoughts clean, focused, positive)…..I've never lived a healthier, or "normal" driven life. My entire life, my phrase towards my diagnosis has always been "All I want is the life that I already have." I don't live with dreams for a future, I don't live much outside the day I'm in….every ounce of my energy and concentration goes into making each day the best it can, for myself, my family and friends…. I implore everyone to keep exploring options, don't ever give up on finding an answer for what is right for you. to give you the best shot possible at the life we've been given. My best wishes to you all.

I was wondering what antidepressant Lewis was taking because he seemed to be coping so well. I stopped taking sertraline a year and a half ago after being on it for 6 years. It worked wonders for a few years then just started causing me so many issues! I’m glad it works for him though. I made the mistake of stopping abruptly so it messed me up for months and my anxiety has been so severe since stopping it but I won’t go back on it, it was a really bad experience for me personally.

My son gets a tic in his face since he was a toddler, but because he wasn't saying explatives with it they didn't diagnose him with Tourettes. Only in the last few years have I heard the term Non Verbal Tourettes with Tics did it make sense to me. His now 29, still at home, hardly any friends, works as a delivery driver for MacDonald's.

Tourette's isn't always about swearing, that (coprolalia) is a rare form of it. A vocal tic can be humming or grunting, or even clearing your throat..

You can have tics without having Tourettes. And in order to have Tourettes you have to have verbal tics.

I love that is talking about this. I just want to tell people that there is a solution and that most people can overcome the climax disturbance. I couldn't come for at least six months, maybe more, than I read a study online saying that it doesn't go away, it just gets harder and you have to give it more time and try different approaches mentally to find the new way. And I did that and it worked

What people need to understand about Tourette's is that it is a categorisation of a couple of symptoms where we simply do not know the origin of. So when I got diagnosed with Tourette's, I thought the doctor would tell me exactly what was "wrong" with me. But she didn't. It's simply that you can check a couple of boxes and with that you fall into a category with other people who face the same issues like having at all times one vocal tic and a few motoric tics, that you have ebs and flows of a certain tic coming back after a couple of years, having had tics since before the age of 6, having concentration issues etc.
So basically it's not so much of being diagnosed with something being "wrong" with you. The only real takeaway after a diagnosis like that is that you now know that there's a reason for it happening but you'll probably have to deal with it forever. Knowing that, it complete negates any reason for taking medicaments. I remember getting prescribed diazepam by my doctor because he wasn't arsed to actually do some routing questions to make sure I'd fall in a Tourette's category and I was just amazed because diazepam is some hard shit if you're having a relatively light form of Tourette's like I have.
I eventually insisted and the guy sent me to a psychologist and she helped me with some great behavorial training and this taught me not just about how tics work and when they come and go, but just about my life and my mind in general. She made me help recognize when you have tics and when you can prevent them or feel that you are approaching a situation when you get a lot of tics. Long story short: you can train yourself to prevent a situation in which you have tics. Don't use heavy medication because it just makes your tics get worse.

Thank you for sharing as this helps me to feel better and feel confident that I can help my son. He is 12 almost 13 and has had Tics since he was 4. He has some that come and go but totally manageable until this year. He stayed 6 th grade and middle school so his anxiety really increased which had brought on some new Tics. Currently I the process of getting him diagnosed with a treatment plan and behavioral therapies to teach him to recognize and redirect his Tics.

I just started to realize that i might have OCD, Tourettes, or be on the spectrum. I think most likely i have OCD, but i do have a tick thing with my breathing. I have to remind myself to breath sometimes or else I'll start to get lightheaded. Psychological shit is so complex. The breathing thing is tied up in everything from my heart surgeries to just anxiety but i never know which, it's fucking scary. Lewis is one of my new role models in all of this shit, his Glastonbury performance the other day was so beautiful because it was so imperfect. Music isn't meant to be perfect, it's meant to connect us.

True no cure, but there are meds and things like very low dose Ritalin can help a lot! Too much and it makes tics worse, but at a very low dose it actually can reduce them by helping the brain come down to a "normal dopamine level" in theory. It was a game changer for me when my tics were so intense around 2007 at the time of a stressful divorce. I happened to find a doc who's son has TS, so he knew about low dose Ritalin and was so supportive of prescribing it. And avoiding caffeine, dopamine-raising activities/meds, and learning stress-reduction techniques like meditation etc. I'm 51 and have had TS since age 7.
And there's an easier way to put yourself in adrenaline- inducing situations while training your brain to be comfortable in the uncomfortable...practicing the Wim Hof Method of breathing exercises and cold/ice baths/cold showers. One of the top best things I have done in my life! 🙏🏽💜

I hope this message helps all who read i truly truly do because ive been through the same thing…symptoms all stem from stress, which leads to anxiety. The docter may diagnose you with something scary that “has no cure” it’s so important not to buy into their beliefs or words, they are only telling you what the learned from a book they dont know your body and belief is so strong like placebo if you think you have something you body wont know the difference and it will start acting like that of which you believe, theres nothing wrong with you, please know its just anxiety which can mimicked every symptom in the book and trust me ive had it all, after my father committed suicide. So i can tel you after years of thinking i was dying to becoming who i am today i can say we are all going to be okay, you must just slowly work hard on changing your beliefs and not letting other peoples beliefs become yours, meditation is great to reprogram your old thoughts that loop and create the symptoms. You’ve got this guys, you are loved you all whole and you are all going to live a long happy life!:) if any of you need help or advice I’m here to help anytime!
    love

Lewis, please check out the recent research using psychedelics (frequently low-dose psilocybin or MDMA) to treat PTSD and various anxiety issues. Don't know if it's been used specifically in TS, but with the amount of theraputic use world-wide I'd be surprised if it hadn't. Anyone who tells you there are no promising treatments for it is poorly informed

He needs to go to a functional medicine doctor. Look into dr. Peter kan & all the reasons for tics or anxiety or Tourette’s or fight or flight there’s a cause for everything & it’s never a pharmaceutical drug. Typically an infection in the basal ganglia something as minor as strep or heavy metal/ mineral imbalances, causing low dopamine. Nutritional & hormonal deficiency’s all can lead to many of these thanks to gaba & how hormones bind to receptor sites affecting neurotransmitter balance. Imbalances in the gut biome & impaired barrier function of the gut lining as well as brain. Honestly save yourself and correct the underlying issues. You don’t need to have it for life. Makes me furious when md’s say this only because they were trained in pharmaceuticals & THEY don’t work to correct the actual issue. Look the dr up. Just for the fact stated it’s affecting endocrine organs, it’s fairly obvious what’s going on even visually too little thyroid hormone there is way more testing for thyroid besides standard that actually show function & sex steroid imbalance. you’ll never get out of it unless you find the actual cause & you can actually get FULLY better.
Twitching- triggered by stress mineral balance is greatly controlled by adrenal hormones. Potassium & magnesium deficiency can be the greatest cause of this happening but the foundation has to be there with blood sugar regulation too as well as macros. Emf & calcium channels are also huge we didn’t evolve with this & radiation affects us greatly mineral wise/ glutathione balance & oxidation levels more than we realize.
