I came to NZ 30 odd years ago and 8 years in, went back “home” for a visit. It seemed everyone was so negative and complaining, I breathed a sigh of relief when I touched back down in Auckland......and was happy to be back home in NZ. NZ is definitely the best country in the world for me ❤

As a kiwi who lived elsewhere for 7 years I recognise the cultural difference and came to really appreciate what we have here, consumerism adds huge stress to society which for me has led to having a healthy distain for the marketing industry. I've watched friends change and become essentially unhappy people as theyve gone about acquiring wealth and lose the enjoyment of the simple things in life because everything is measured by the dollar. Its nice to hear you recognise the simple things that really make life good, and it sounds like you might be able to now consider yourself at least part kiwi. 👊☺

Your view on consumerism in New Zealand is interesting. I think a lot of especially older Kiwis think we are really consumer driven nowadays compared to maybe 20 or 30 years ago - I certainly do. There are more billboards, more pressure advertising, more sales, more "buy, buy, buy". To hear that we are comparatively not that way really highlights the benefits of an outside view. The same applies to our environmental impacts, we see the dirty rivers, the rubbish, the pollution, the waste. Whereas to someone from another country they see how much better we are than most everywhere else.
And yeah - gotta have good coffee. I don't know how anyone can claim that crap they serve up in America is "good".

Thanks to American TV I've been plenty exposed to the toy frenzy of an American Christmas, but it never really occurred to me how it's not like that here. Even during just a three week holiday to New Zealand we felt many of the things you describe and could tell that NZ has a really great culture and way of life that we long for here. Many of us still in America can also see that America is the odd one out these days - the rest of the world can teach us a thing or two (or three or four) about how to do big things better, but there is this culture of pride that prevents us from reaching out and/or changing our ways. Living in Australia for a couple of decades which is a lot more 'Americanised' than NZ; this place pretty much took the U.S as a template with it's setup...states, a senate, a designed capital in Canberra (the ACT) which mirrors the Washington D.C etc etc. Going back home to NZ for a holiday is a step down in stress, can feel it falling off just being in the middle of all that scenery which seems to speak to you on a cellular level..there is so much spirit in that place. That combined with the laid back vibe of NZers is something you feel instantly. Will be retiring back to NZ in a few years despite Australia being a fantastic place in some ways (mainly the ability to choose a climate that suits from cool Tasmania all the way up to tropical Darwin). I recently went on the canyon swing in Queenstown, on the coach travelling with me was a guy from California. He had already been skydiving, bungy jumping and had partaken of some other activity. He claimed that because of H&S laws he was unable to do some of these activities in the US. There is definitely a different attitude to life and a can do attitude to make thing happen in NZ. Obviously the law around suing when things go wrong makes a huge difference.

One thing I have noticed about your videos over a few years is I think you have increased your speed of speaking more in line with Kiwis. So often when conversing with American's I have wanted to ask them to spit it out. I feel like they are so slow at talking as if they are revelling in being the focus of attention, whereas kiwis want to get their point across so they can get the other person's response and move the conversation forward. Chatting with some American's can really drag sometimes.

As for Americans being separate, I've got my own theory and you hit on this yourself before. You said Americans think they have monopoly on the concept of freedom.
Americans are so anti English whether consciencely or not.
Changes the language/concept of freedom/quite arrogant in opinions/taking advantage of staff and concept of human rights/gun laws/
no understanding of now British & Commonwealth countries can support a long tradition of monarchy.
On the other hand believing someone has your back and trust it. It's not about agreeing it's about believing it will all be fine. Yes very much Christian belief system, not always about agreeing, accepting the narrative.
NZ gave women the right to vote first, just saying.
A LOT of USA tv programs have so much violence, it makes me wonder if they think that's how the world reacts to crime, YEAH...NAH just THEM.
