I'm not sure about "to each his own". the timbre changes, and at least on viol family instruments or acoustics (me = double bass) there are often instructions as to wha is where. Rabbath has a piece that is "call and response" that is the same phrase played at different places (same notes) and it's such an obvious difference. It's expected to borrow or outright steal to bring things into one's playing. For me, that's totally fine. What I find more annoying is that fans of certain bands might worship a particular musician thinking they're a unique and generational talent, when really they're getting plaudits for ripping off DFA1979, or copping Francis Rocco Prestia licks.
When the theft is blantant it should be a homage/tribute, which is a complement that directs people to the original innovator. Keeping quiet implies youre happy letting people believe you did the hard work. Give credit where it is due or add enough of your own thing to make it yours.
