@@Sam19509 I think that might hurt Poilievre in year two or three, but by the time the next election comes along Trump will be gone.If the economy is better at that point he'll be in a good spot to win a second term.
@@MReginaldGoldstein77 I don’t think he is gonna get that historic majority that some people predicted of Trudeau stayed on as his opponent. Christy surprised you? Didn’t surprise anyone from BC: Christy’s got zero political horse-sense, and never did. She got busted doing shady things at her university’s student union election which led to her suspending not only her candidacy, but also her education. Thus, when she was appointed education minister in Gordon Campbell’s first BC Liberal government, early 2000s, she unconstitutionally tore up a teachers’ contract negotiated by the previous NDP government and imposed a new one with massive cuts to everything from wages to supplies to special-needs kids. The teachers’ union naturally sued and won, but the BC Liberals appealed. Christy, however, after making a total mess of this portfolio, suddenly resigned both her portfolio, but her seat as well. By the time she returned to politics the suit was still in court-this time the SCoC which ultimately ordered now-premier Christy to pay restitution. An entire K-12 cohort was deprived of a properly-funded education by the time the dispute was settled. Christy literally parachuted back into the party several years later when the BC Liberals were at rock-bottom from scandals, disgraced and demoralized. There was an embarrassingly long silence when her final-ballot victory was announced-“stunned silence,” I observed. She became premier without a seat by shoehorning herself into a shell-shocked party-in-crisis. The president of the BC Civil Liberties Union, David Eby, defeated Christy in her first by-election attempt (he is now BC’s NDP Premier), thence she parachuted into a safe seat in Kelowna (nearly investigated for offering the BC Liberals MLA -who didn’t really want to give up his seat for Christy-an inducement, which of course is illegal). So she became a caretaker premier with a seat in the Assembly. What did her subsequent 2013 election win prove? That she was a savvy campaigner and shrewd politician? Nope. It proved that the NDP Opposition ran an astoundingly stupid “positive politics” campaign in which candidates were forbidden to make “negative” criticism of BC Liberals perfidy. The NDP blew a 20-point lead going in and lost to Christy whose only platform was rote repetition of a prosperous promise to build 15 LNG export facilities on the West Coast and wipe out BC’s huge public debt. That’s how bad the NDP’s campaign was, and that proves that Christy once again advanced by default. By 2017 BC voters had had just about all they could stand from Christy whose political gormlessness was repeatedly reiterated, almost daily. For example, she accused the NDP of hacking the BC Liberals website shortly before the 2017 campaign; unlike his pacifist predecessor, newly-acclaimed NDP Leader of the Loyal Opposition, John Horgan (RIP), did not turn the other cheek to Christy’s cheekiness but rather demanded an apology and retraction or suffer a defamation suit. He gave her 24 hours. How could she be so dumb? We saw it again the other day when she cheerily lied about her membership in the federal Conservative Party. How could she imagine immunity from journalistic investigation of any and all claims by absolutely any politician? Back in that 2017 election, Horgan’s sudden and, for Christy, surprising aggressiveness-so uncharacteristic of the hitherto-passive NDP-obviously shook Christy. First she had to abjectly apologize and retract-which she did by leaving a message on Horgan’s answering service which he was all too happy to replay for news media. But most astounding was her subsequent conspicuous lack of petulant pluck which had long been her calling card (which made her such a successful right-wing talk-radio host during her political hiatus). It appeared she didn’t dare get too lippy with Horgan as her rival. The BC Liberals won, but came up one seat short of a majority. What happened next says so much about her that journalists would surely bring up had she wisely decided not to run after all. 2017 elected 3 Greens to the BC Assembly, up from one. They signed a confidence and supply agreement with the Opposition NDP and together they toppled the BC Liberals minority by voting down the very first bill of the new parliament. Christy tried and failed to convince the Lieutenant Governor to call another election (just a month after the recent one) and in an astounding display of snit, resigned not only her leadership, but her seat as well. Not only did she hang her caucus out to dry, but she effectively solved a logistical problem for the new NDP government: had she stayed the NDP would have to use its appointed Speaker to continually break tie votes in the NDP’s favour-not the ideal situation. However, after she stormed off in a snit, a BC Liberal backbencher volunteered to be Speaker (and was instantly booted from caucus). The Green-Dippers could now govern with a slim but comfortable majority. Thanks, Christy! Horgan’s first term was so good that his government was re-elected with a large majority in 2020’s early election. The BC Liberals, on the other hand, never recovered from Christy’s leadership: the party slid to low double-digits in the polls and, after booting former cabinet minister John Rustad from caucus for claiming climate-change is a hoax, saw him resurrect the old BC Conservative Party (which had been defunct since the early 1950s) and climb steadily in the polls. The BC Liberals changed their name to BC United but continued to tank as their MLAs started to defect to the BC Conservatives. BCU folded just two months before the last election in October, leaving the few “liberals” in the supposed “liberal-conservative coalition against the socialist hordes” without nomination papers for BCC candidacy and, having already begun gearing up for their respective campaigns and spending out-of-pocket what they expected to be reimbursed for by the BCU, were forced to eat those out-of-pocket expenses and run as Independents. None of them won their incumbencies and BCC-preferred candidates took their ridings. The BCU never looked back after Christy dumped their predecessor. The BCC is farther right than even the BC Liberals (who were not affiliated with any centrist Liberal parties anywhere). This is Christy’s legacy-and in the fullness of time, precludes her from ever running for anything again. We here in BC are much relieved about that!
The numbers NOW say that Canadians would vote overwhelmingly Democratic, but if Canada were to actually join the USA, everything would shift, including the Republicans and Democrats. It's therefore naïve to simply assume that the politics of a Canada would stay the same as part of the USA. That's not how politics works.
@Incornsyucopia believe it or not, if you look at the policies of both parties, the Conservatives are actually closer on the political spectrum to the Democrats than they are to the Republicans because US society is so much more to the right than Canada's. Even CPC supporters here are more likely to vote Democrat on policy. It's at that point that big money PACs come into play and make lower knowledge voters swing the other way.
