love this arrangement.I was there at the LantarenVenster and this has been one of my very favourite performances of Kurt Elling with the fantastic Metropole Orchestra. Saw Kurt last month and he performed this song again. He dedicated it to Mark Murphy as this had been his favourite song of Kurt.
This is amazing. It's somewhere "in between" in the musical world, Also, for me, It's interesting to hear that Wayne Shorter's tone..the timbre etc. are now "classical".
in my opinion Metropol Orchestra is one of the best in the world… maybe the best at the moment. Saw it at Paradiso Amsterdam feat. Gregory Porter.... awesome and breathtaking sound… till today I didn't hear something better !
Yes, as the actual melody is played by the base guitar on the original instrumental recording, and meant to be the dominant sound..to change that into a dominant ,out of context, oboe with a melody that maybe, just maybe, could pass as a less dominant layer just seems odd. I play this tune myself on the piano.
