I never really cared if SNES had worse quality than the arcade, I'm just glad that once I bought it, I could just switch it on instead of hunting for an arcade that has a KI machine in it, they're very hard to find these days...
@@girlsdrinkfeck thats what I did. Some rom versions had bugs and game would crash alot but I found a solid one recently "No Virus/Spyware" BS thank god and ran solid and smooth on MAME. The download came with KI1 and KI2 arcade. Love it!
All things considered they did an amazing job to even port this to the snes. Now if they would have ported ki one to the n64 it would have probably been almost arcade perfect as far as in game graphics. All it would have been missing is the fmv. Wish they would have gone that route instead of making ki gold which was a reworked ki2.
Obviously the arcade version looks better, but the SNES port truly deserves praising (I love the ULTRA echoes) Also, the synchronisation of both videos is really satisfying
There were very few arcade perfect console ports back then. Hell, there weren't any IIRC until the Playstation/Saturn era and even still they were pretty rare. What they managed to pull off with the SNES version of this game is nothing short of impressive. Even today with so many options to play the original arcade version I still play the SNES port from time to time. Rare have nothing to be ashamed of.
I agree I do prefer the arcade version but nothing is wrong with this port. It's good, atleast they fully utilized the resources in the SNES, KI Gold could've have been better given its console's specs.
Best comparison video for showcasing the differences. This game is one of the main reasons why i'm almost done building my own home arcade unit. Even the sound was better on arcade and it already was pretty decent.
Killer Instinct if I recall was built with a silicon graphics engine Similar to what they used to make the first Donkey Kong Country game, (Silicon would also be the company that designed the N64) If I recall correctly they used a creative technique where they rendered the graphics on a seperate more powerful machine from the SNES hardware and then dumped the pre-rendered graphics onto an SNES cart. When designing Killer Instinct (first for arcades obviously) they were unfathomed by the limitations of console hardware and build a custom arcade board that could render all the Silicon Graphics in real time. Clearly they had to make come cutbacks when porting it but in this time it's to be expected that the original arcade machine is always going to be superior to a console port.
I was ok with the SNES version but I was pissed that KI 1 never made it to the N64. Which was at the time was supposed to be called Ultra 64. KI2 was an excellent import but graphics wise I'm sure KI 2 was much easier to import than KI1 hence KI1 being full 3d ish.
Chief Thunder always had that in the arcade version! Just like Sabrewulf howls in the Super Nintendo version during his win animation but in the arcade version he doesn't howl in his win animation.
Frame Rates may not have been as good, but it was so much easier to control. I can kinda see what you're saying. The backgrounds and textures were a different style in KI2. I personally prefer the style of the KI Arcade over the KI2 Textures. Two really historical games.
SNES port served as a means for me to learn how to play the game. which was way more economical than getting destroyed by people in arcades. to my credit I learned how to play with every character back in 1995, completed the game on hardest (6 star) difficult with every character, and decided to do it with each flavor of turbo too. the next time I played it in arcade I obliterated everyone. unfortunately that was over a year into the arcade game's life, it was shortly thereafter replaced by KI2s then. which KI Gold the following year served the same exact purpose. except by that point the arcade gimmick was wearing out. today I own the arcade KI1 with KI2 board yet to be installed again. lost a lot of control of my fingers due to wear and tear in my neck. I'm #2 on Aurcade for the game.
Super Nintendo upgraded to 64 for that reason specifically, I was just upset their wasn't much finalization to the Ultra 64 with the original Killer Instinct attached to it
Great vid. I always thought it was funny how the SNES version had to echo the "ultra" instead of saying "ultra combo". Despite the downgrades in music and graphics, Rare did a great job translating and the game was so fun DOWN SOUTH!!!
Still a massive accomplishment for the SNES. I was amazed that it could run this game all those years ago. SNES is just a beast of historical gaming history.
Sou muito fã desse jogo. Evidentemente a versão do arcade é superior. Mas a versão de snes ficou incrível, comparem o cenário da Orchid nas duas versões... A Rare fez um verdadeiro milagre no port desse jogo.
Crappy graphics and bad 3d Snes is better considerd the limited power. And even so the controllers from snes are 1000 times better than the stupid arcade buttons.
snes port was ok but no where near what the arcade was. Infact the N64 port of Killer instinct 2 that they called Killer instinct gold was actually not nearly as nice as the arcade either. It's strange because they said the n64 was going to be this ultra powerful system and it was supposed to be able to port the original Killer instinct perfectly and never did. After seeing the KI Gold port of KI2 I understand why they skipped doing Killer Instinct on the n64. Wasn't powerful enough to do it justice or maybe they thought the game wasn't a money maker anymore. All I know is I was going to buy a n64 just based on the promise that KI was coming to it. Instead it went to the Snes for some reason and never came to the n64 and so I never bought an n64 but I bought a playstation and never regretted it.
axelfoley20 nintendo decide to make a port for the snes because they need a AAA game in that moment while the n64 was delayed they decide to port KI2 to the n64 and they fix every bad stuff from the arcade like the audiovisual and the n64 has real time 3d enviroments and the arcade ver has videos instead and look extremely pixeleated.. at the end almost every publications and reviewers conclude that the n64 is a superior experience than the arcade . So if they would decide to release KI on the n64 it would has been the perfect port
snes was the only system that could handle this port and it was fun as hell! we had tournaments and it was dope bcuz you had to know combos u couldnt get away tryna cheat.
In ki snes you can use more handy gameplay, make perfect combo attack, easier to destroy opponent In ki arcade you have more effects, amazing camera scene, you can destroy your opponent but easier than in snes But I really like snes and arcade version and now for the xbox version snes 24 fps? arcade 30 fps? observation, nothing more....
Because they used lower quality and shorter sound samples to save space on a cartridge. They could have used the originals, and as far as I know the super nes even had the capability do full motion video. To make a cartridge that could fit all that data though, would have made the cartridge more expensive/eat into profits.
It's really jarring being able to easily compare them these days because you can tell the SNES sound clips are slightly sped up and stitched together to save as much space as possible. Still an amazing port job, though.
I feel like the arcade KI1 looks better than arcade KI2. I kind of feel like they watered down the graphics of KI2 so that there wouldn't be as much of a difference between the N64 game.
Though the arcade version has better gralhava and animations i like how the snes version gives a lot of attention to the background. Specially in orchid and spinal's stages

lmao. Yeah, I guess their wasn't enough space to add 'Combo' to it.
I think the "Ultra!, Ultra!, Ultra!" is far better personally. Distinguishes it from the rest of combos, and has more finality to it.

Pretty rare??? Not on Sega Saturn lol
Saturn always had arcade perfect ports just look at X-men vs Street Fighter or Darkstalkers.
Saturn had a few, those few required Ram exspansion. MSH was a botched port. KoF was still a load fest too.
@@sebastiann.8088 Very true; with the exception of MK3, any PSX port of an arcade fighter was much, much worse than what was in the Saturn.

Yes they prerended sprites on an SGI workstation based around a MIPS RISC processor much like the one found in the N64.
