    One thing I do which I don't hear mentioned a lot is a way I have of obliterating the whole painting. If you use a small amount of Gum Arabic in the water it makes paint lift easier so if I'm well into a piece of work and have gone badly wrong I just get a strong garden sprayer and wash the lot away. With the Gum Arabic in the mix it brings the paper almost back to white but also leaves a ghost image so it's easy to re draw. MUST let the paper dry thoroughly though and of course if you want any really white highlights when you rework it use Gouache. This works well for me.

    I love how you take chances, decide it was wrong but then don't panic and somehow get it all back on track! I panic! Just lately I have had a painter's block, I have fiddled too much, lost the intensity of colour, and the worst is ended up with a mish mash of tones, so I gave up. Best paint when you are not tired, have time and inclination. Sigh, you make it look way too easy! Love your calmness and dedication to putting it right.

      Thanks for your message, and we all have days when out paintings just don't work, so try not to be too hard on yourself. The reason why I keep calm now is because I have had many failures and have learnt from them. Less is more with watercolour! :)

      @@KarenRiceArt amen! Yes, I agree, I tend to overwork my paintings, that is why I love semi-abstract landscapes, it's the unpredictability of watercolour how it paints itself!

    Thanks for showing your mistakes and how to go about correcting them. As a beginner some of these have happened to me and I have panicked and ruined the piece by overcorrecting and making everything muddy. Also thanks for showing different ways of getting detail in like with the card. You are the only one I have seen do this! 😊 I think I am still too heavy handed even with a very thin brush so struggle to get nice thin lines. Thank you for your video and tips!!

    Getting stuck when painting from a photo is often a problem for me. I sometimes do make things up from my imagination and it's surprising how sometimes that turns out better. I can draw from photos pretty well, and don't usually get stuck there. Many fine tips in this video. You are a wonderful teacher. Thank you.

    Hi Karen I just came across your Chanel this is beautiful, I am an artist but usually work with acrylics, and have only just started working with watercolours a about six months ago and am loving the way the paint moves. I really enjoy your relaxed attitude, as I find myself panicking halfway through a piece of work, but will definitely be trying this tomorrow l really love it. Your don’t worry and fixing mistakes is so refreshing and give me some confident to be patience and trust the process. Learning that it often get ugly before it get beautiful 😂 thank you so much for sharing your talent, tip and advice, just started using a twig it a great tool. A beautiful piece, l have subscribed and look forward to seeing more or your work... go well Karen go well.

    Absolutely gorgeous, thank you for sharing and teaching your thought process and mistakes, the correcting of mistakes is the best part because I make plenty. What white watercolor do you use to add in light? I have never been successful with that. TIA

      @KarenRiceArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Meg for your comment, so glad you like the tutorial. Especially the correcting the mistakes part! I use Windsor and Newton white gouache, I find it’s the best quality white paint out there for watercolour painting. Hope this was helpful, take care :-)

    I love your work! It's always lovely. Are you self taught? Or are you trained in art? Either way, you have a wonderful eye. Thank you for showing corrections. I have often painted things and wanted to fix something and haven't been able to fix it.

      Thank you Elizabeth, I did my BA degree in art in the 1980's, but a lot of what I do now is self taught! I hope the fixes help with your painting, thanks again :)

    Hi Karen thanks for your lovely abstract work you are sharing with us. My question is do you stretch your 300 gm paper at all ? Thanks from Perth Australia

    • @KarenRiceArt
      @KarenRiceArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Glenys for your lovely comments so pleased that you like my abstract paintings in watercolour. I don’t stretch my paper, I use watercolour paper on a block pad, it prevents the paper from buckling. Hope this is helpful? happy painting :-)
