  • Beekeeping is really fun especially if you win some beekeeping equipment and today, we are announcing our winners.
    Varroa mites are the worst thing to happen to honey bees. This mite spreads many viruses and is killing bee hives. A green drone comb is often referred to as a good alternative to treating for mites rather than using harsh chemicals that could be bad for bees. Today, we'll answer more questions about mite control and green drone comb.

    Hello, Mr. Burns! I'm dropping in to say hello and extend my thanks! One of your viewers watched an episode where you made a 3-D Printed Varroa Destructor Mite, he printed one out and mailed it to me! It's VERY nice! So thanks for sharing, your content is going places. I wish you all the best in beekeeping! Fred.

      Hello Frederick Dunn! So nice to meet up with you. I admire your beekeeping videos here on TH-cam, and respect and appreciate all the effort you put into it. I wish I could have made it to Hive Live but my staff inadvertently failed to pass the invite on to me. Perhaps in the future we can do a video together.

    Thank you for all your videos! I bought drone comb, but didn't even look at the size and ended up with honey super size. I didn't think that would be offered...why would one put it in the honey super? Is it even wise to try it in my brood area? I imagine they would make a mess of the comb if I did that. Any advice other than get the correct size? I can...just hoping there is another solution. 😊

    You brought up the idea of what if the green drone comb was filled with viruses and would it still spread to the bees cleaning out the dead drones. Would it be beneficial to soak the green frame in alcohol (and letting it dry) before putting it back in the hive?

    • @beek
      @beek  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not a virologist, but viruses are transferred throughout the hive in many ways and certainly to could be on way. If you are really concerned you could remove the drone brood, clean the frames really good with soapy water, re-wax.

      They are a bit too expensive for me to purchase and review. If they sent me one I would. I might do a video on my opinion on it though because I've heard tons of feed back on it. From what I've heard most entomologist and bee scientist and master beekeepers have valid concerns.

    The issue I have with using these is that the bees are using a lot of resources filling the drone frames that could be used elsewhere if I make the effort to keep the mite population down.

    FYI - Unless he (the person printing them) is the designer, it against the license that comes with the file to sell these for profit or really any commercial use. I printed one of these from thingiverse, and it looks just like that model. It comes with a non-commercial license. If you want to sell or use these in a commercial fashion, contact the designer and give them some return on their creative work. Nobody who prints these can just sell them. To even give them away as a prize in a contest on youtube is against the license. I'm very sensitive to giving creators credit and not pirate their works. Just sayin.....

      @@beek Thanks, sorry if I came across too strongly. Your conference friend did nothing wrong sharing the file. Your friend who printed it did nothing wrong giving it to you. In my opinion, you are doing nothing wrong using it as a teaching tool. And, if you really want to pay someone to print them in quantity, all they need to do is contact the creator and ask; most would be happy to get a couple of bucks a print as royalty. Some would just say no problem. But it's like using non-open source music on youtube without permission. Or someone using your channel content in a for-profit course without asking you.

    I was wondering…
    What do bees in the wild do to combat mites and such? Why is it an issue for domestic hives? Also, is seeing bees on the ground in a winter warm up normal?

    • @beek
      @beek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many feel that most of the feral colonies were killed by mites when they first entered the US and only the domesticated hives carried us through because beekeepers started combating mites with dangerous chemicals back them. But feral (wild) hives are certainly worse off now than domesticated hives because no one can help them combat mites. It is a slaughter in the wild. Yup, dead bees in the snow is a good sign of house cleaning duties.

    The mites transmit disease through their bite, like mosquitoes and ticks. Once they're dead, they aren't biting.

    • @beek
      @beek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are never all dead, rarely, because they keep emerging with more and more bee life cycles and they keep coming in the front door on backs of bees. Even if you kill them all, the viruses stay with the bees so you must not let mite levels increase.

    • @Amethyst1919
      @Amethyst1919 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@beek I was referring to when you freeze them and they all die. You put them back in the hive... Whatever viruses they had can't infect further because they can not bite, so they aren't infecting any further by letting the bees clean the frames... I was agreeing with you...
