- This video is the basis for the tutorial series. In this episode I show you around my set up, my workstation if you will. I like to have my things in a certain way which I show and I also show you how I work in Cubase 8. We look at the arrangement and mixer window. As I show you how I create things it is good to get a basic grasp of my set up so you can translate that to your own set up and understand and apply.

I almost have the same setup man.Let me tell you,a friend of mine has probably less than that and he's a composer for Universal,he's written music for commercials and trailers for Top Gear and Game of Thrones,don't sweat it's really about talent and timing.And luck of course.

Cubase is hands down by far the best DAW on many levels. But also Pro Tool sis brilliant for electronic music once you have the audio - so easy to manipulate and mixing in PT is superb.
Logic for the clear interface though, automation on the same track or nested. And the ease of dealing with multi output VSTi's. Just gone over to Cubase 9 pro - big changes for me - seems like cubase needs time spent on small details, not big things. But yes Pro Tools is still the best for what it was designed for: Audio, Audio and more Audio.
As far as I know Tom never tells us a specific touchscreen app that will do the things his does. Mark W Roberts mentioned Metagrid for iOS in his comment: big thank you for that! I knew about Lemur but wasn't sure it could do all these things easily. It can! Search TH-cam for "Lemur/Cubase Template Tutorial Video" and also "Controlling Cubase Track Visibility Using Lemur".
I also plan to look at Metagrid and any other good recommendations people have.
I love this videos! I noticed he mentioned CC16, but didn't say what he uses it for. Does he answer this in a later video? Does anyone know?

Tom, I was wondering about the 3 Faders on the JLCooper Fadermaster that you have assigned to Mic Positions. You say you have them set up for Close, Mid and Far and I'm guessing you have made every single library in your arsenal to be uniformed to use these 3 faders (providing the Libraries have 3 mic Positions). What I am wondering about is when you have (or make) libraries with many more Mic Positions, such as something from Spitfire, how do you control those positions as well? I own a JLCooper and recently got a Kenton Control Freak so I am trying to figure out the best thing to do regarding this. Thanks for all your videos. Been amazingly educational! Jono

I shall try to remember that whenever we should find ourselves working side-by-each in the future... - I have since replaced Cubase with 2 other options: Reaper & Harrison Mixbus - both work great with Reason 9 - as well as Sibelius 7.5 and Kontakt and Arturia and Waves... so far 0 dilemma or setbacks - to each his own they say.

Tom, I'm gonna be honest with you. Without your soundtrack, Mad Max Fury Road would have been an average film. Your work literally injected steroids into it, took it to another level. It is proof that composers really are the "second director."
Also true for 300 Rise of An Empire.
Hari Jeevakumar Nope. The music elevated Fury Road, no doubt, but so does any great soundtrack, like Star Wars for example. The steroids were already there that's thanks to the great George Miller who use real stunts on real location with fuel drived explosions plus the human element added to the chase that's lacking in Fast and furious and all the shit action movies with cardboard story and characters that's been a stamp of the last ten years of Holywood action cinema.
With 300 Rise of an empire I agree with you, It's just a generic action movie with cardboard characters and a good soundtrack. A CGI fuckfest if you will.
airixxxx thanks for your comment. It's an interesting opinion and perspective. I certainly agree with you after seeing the film again. To some extent. I still stand by that the soundtrack plays a MASSIVE role in film. Check out comicbookgirl's mad max fury road review and you'll understand what I mean!
Hari Jeevakumar Actually not really. Your admiration is... admirable, but as a scoring guy myself I can attest that--especially in a movie like this--the score should really not so much be noticed, but rather simply an accompaniment. Really, if you even think about it, there's a problem. Composers are sure as shit not "second directors", and believe me, the genius of the film was NOT in the soundtrack, although I'm not complaining about the soundtrack at all. It was what it needed to be.

Every part of a great movie makes a great movie. Some parts more than otherm, but still every part. If one part is missing, a movie that could've been great can be average or even terrible. For example the new Fantastic Four had 5 amazing super talented actors and an awesome talented directer, but the script sucked and production and execution sucked. So Mad Max wash't an amazing movie just because of the music or action or story telling, casting, acting, etc. is was great because every single piece of the puzzle came together to make a great movie.
+Alexander Brown This age old assumption that "if you think about it there's a problem" is not a very nuanced perspective on film scoring. Yes there are many moments in a film where the music should barely even be felt but there are other moments - in Fury Road especially - where the music takes on the aesthetic and even comedic values of the film and is very noticeable indeed. While I do agree it is almost 99% of the time the job for the composer to deliver the directors intention, the job is not to make the music ALWAYS in the background. I wouldn't be surprised to hear many composers - even Tom - disagree with me, but I am *REALLY* curious to hear his opinion none the less.

I have a question about your shortcuts (also from the mad max video) on your panel, specifically the 'show data at cursor'.
I'm assuming that you're using a project logical editor preset that checks which parts are under the cursor and hides the rest?
If so, doesn't that mess with your Visibillity list? I.e, if you've set up your session, and hidden a few tracks before, will this Macro/PLE not show or hide those also?
And just another one; if you've set up your groups & stems, how do you deal with FX channels that multiple groups send to?
For example, if I have 1 drum group and 1 string group, which both use a send to FX channel 1, how do you handle that with a batch channel export?

Gear Zen; He might have (always been wealthy), I don't know, but lots of people are - why assume he wasn't (unless you know). Regardless and more importantly though - he's definitely not arrogant about it.
I'd bet you know more than you think.. sometimes you can understand the creative but just have to learn the technique.... little by little buddy.. I think everyone's like that, it's what makes recording so satisfying and frustrating, I knew a guy who used to say "Ok you just learned how not to do it" whenever I fucked something up... wise man..

As an IT nerd (profession and hobby) I can't help but wonder who helped you setup all of this and just everything else that is computer related? Is it a guy who specialises in this? Just a general IT guy? Yourself? A company?

THe JL Cooper editor software for the FaderMaster, I can only find for Mac, assuming you have no issue with your PC setup? If so Im buying

How does the template thing work though? Say you're using a cowbell on track 3 and a trumpet on track 276? Why not just dial tracks up as you need them from the sub menus on a manageable sized template?

I have recently purchased a dell R610 server to use as a slave it has 96 gigs of ram. Has 2 intel Xeon 5650 2.66ghz 6 core processors (which give me 24 threads in VEPro)
The master computer is running cubase pro 9.5
And is an dual 8 core 2.93 with 48 gigs of ram.
Ssd system drive and ssd sample drives.
I used to run VEPro and cubase on one machine.
I now have the server and Mac connected with cat6 Ethernet via a gigabit switcher.
My template is very large has close to 30 instances of vep. Housing many kontakt instruments. And two instances that run about 3 omnisphere 2.
I have been testing it out and I am here what sounds like the cpu is maxing out even when just triggering one midi track. but when I watch task manager on pc it is low only at 30 percent.
I think I was getting better performance running all on one machine.
Is there something else this can be?

:) This studio is so overpowered compared to my own abilities that it felt more like a museum visit. Very few things I can actually implement in my own poor studio :)

how do you manage video with such huge project whenever i have huge midi projects my video freezes stop playing smoothly trying to figure out what exactly you all use to make it work but haven't got the right setup or specs or trick you use to work endlessly on the movie length video so smoothly kindly help me with that if possible. I use Cubase and video is always a pain when the project gets heavy. Thanks in advance Junkie. :)
Oi, vraagjes mbt de cubase template; als elke track erin overeenkomt met een map vol samples in een bepaalde categorie (drums, bas, gitaar, sfx etc etc). Wat is het voordeel ervan ze allemaal opeenvolgend voor je te hebben? :) principe is het dus een soort diskop, of windows verkenner overzicht van je sample library, maar dan in template formaat? Een smaak ding misschien, maar is een kleinere selectie niet overzichtelijker, kan je altijd nieuwe tracks aanmaken waar nodig :) . Misschien beter als ik de andere tutorials bekijk! Cheers.
