  • The Flowers Of The Forest(Scottish Traditional) - Song Lyrics with Orchestral backing music.
    LYRICS:
    The Flowers of the Forest
    Scottish Traditional
    I've heard the lilting, at the yowe-milking,
    Lasses a-lilting before dawn o' day;
    But now they are moaning on ilka green loaning;
    "The Flowers of the Forest are a' wede away".
    As buchts, in the morning, nae blythe lads are scorning;
    The lasses are lonely and dowie and wae.
    Nae daffin', nae gabbin', but sighing and sobbing,
    Ilk ane lifts her leglen, and hies her away.
    In hairst, at the shearing, nae youths now are jeering,
    The Bandsters are lyart, and runkled and grey.
    At fair or at preaching, nae wooing, nae fleeching,
    The Flowers of the Forest are a' wede away.
    At e'en, in the gloaming, nae swankies are roaming,
    'Bout stacks wi' the lasses at bogle to play.
    But ilk ane sits drearie, lamenting her dearie,
    The Flowers of the Forest are a' wede away.
    Dule and wae for the order sent our lads to the Border;
    The English, for ance, by guile wan the day:
    The Flowers of the Forest, that foucht aye the foremost,
    The prime o' our land are cauld in the clay.
    We'll hae nae mair lilting, at the yowe-milking,
    Women and bairns are dowie and wae.
    Sighing and moaning, on ilka green loaning,
    The Flowers of the forest are all wede away.

      Actually it's from 1513 flowers o the forest were the 80 Selkirk foresters went to fight with their king v the English at Flodden. Only 1 man returned.

    Thank you for the lyrics (along with the translations). I was reading about a soldier who was wounded in Northern Ireland, in a novel by Rosamunde Pilcher, "September." He said the pipes and drums of the Highland Regiment would "pipe the lament at funerals. 'The Flowers of the Forest.' The saddest sound on earth." I had to find it and see what that was about. Very hauntingly beautiful. 💔

    It's Floo'ers, and this is about ten times too fast!

    This is all wrong context. The flowers o the forest were the 80 Selkirk foresters who went to flodden with their king and died there 1513. Only 1 man came home

      Is that why it's played by one Piper?

      @@RaenbowBlight not sure. Maybe lone piper is just more poignant. Like highland cathedral and other slow ones.

      Because it is played at funerals and usually only by one piper.

    Music with bagpipes is original
    but does not match Flowers ...
    By the way, where are the flowers ?

      flowers are an artistic euphemism for good people or lovely people. as in the popular song "where have all the flowers gone?" that was about the young men and women off to the Vietnam war

    The abyss of the deadening sadness of life destroyed in senseless horror at the behest of soul-dead zombies with power is opened up again and again.

      The reason the Scots were there was in order to support the Auld Alliance with the French.
