    I can’t wait until her repair in Frauenfelden is finished and we see this beauty back in action again! If you compare her stack talk to that of a classic steam loco, it is like an athlete vs an old man. If you genuinely appreciate the engineering rationale of steam technology, you have to admire any venture on modernizing steam traction. Glück auf 52 8055!

    Makes me wish I could find frame for a QJ and make a swing at American steam in the modern era

    I am only a fan of this loco. They have redesigned parts of the cilinders, valves, pistons and the indeed new exhaust system has been calculated by Modern Steam Icon Livio Dante Porta. And of course more parts/features of original 52 have been redesigned. One can argue about its new (i.e. 1997/98 applied) outside appearance and early problems (2012 it runs smooth as sewing engine on the Hauenstein-line!) but from a performance perspective: A MIRACLE (AND AN IMPRESSIVE CLEAN SOUND :-))

    American shortlines should place order on this! I know that the DLM produces modern steams, either coal firing and oil firing versions. for the coal firing variants. will automatic stoker included?

    Hmm since a steam locomotive creates an amount of electricity from its own turbo generator im sure there would be enough electricity to operate a computerised system to monitor things like friction, all kinds of pressure gauges, the locomotives weight, overall weight of the train and so on to operate a part of the throttle. No doubt its possible but someone needs to install a system like this and steam locomotive engineers are quite conservative from time to time

      If I am not mistaken this locomotive has computer. Even combination of batteries and some auxiliary generator coupled to driven axle could do that work. Modern computers took very little power and I am sure that today it could be driven by computer based on smartphone, but much more bigger problem is power for train. It's no more only but for lightning but a heating, ventilation, toilets... all need power that is supplied from locomotive so any modern steam locomotive would need either some steam turbine or diesel generator for this. If that would be stem turbine put somewhere on locomotive it would took some part of engine's power.

    I agree mate, they should bring steam back! Only one problem 2 much hard mannual labour 4 the driver!

    yep the automatic coal feeding machine tech exists (and it looks relatively simple) and widely used in modern coal-firing industrial boilers (in some countries. many factories had its boilers originally built for No.6 fuel oil been converted to burn solid fuels instead) and therefore eliminate the needs of firemen. another problem still persists. Steam throttle controls are a complicating methods. I'm not sure wheter did throttle controls became a user-friendly one?

    @Trailltrader Not anymore, they did at one time in Europe, but most of the engines now a days are either dual cabbed or can be switched around on a wye. I would figure that the 50 8055 is also too big for any one turntable they may have

    Sounds rather different to a normal 52 engine. Have the cylinders been altered and the blastpipe?

    Is it possible to run a locomotive with a coil boiler? Or would the heat destroy it no matter what material it was made of?

    great sound, how much did the performance increased after the rebuilding?
    Can it be operated by one man?

      It can be operated by one man and it was upgraded from 2100 psi to 3000 psi

    sure but i simply wasnt agreeing to the argument of much manual labour while operating... an effective, modern steam locomotive will have an automatic coal feeder...

      mechanical coal feeders - stokers - are quiet old technology used on large locomotives. Beside this most of DML locomotives are oil fired.

    Gute Idee. Aber ein Nachbau wäre schöner, da so wieder Originale verloren gehen werden. Die Pfeife klingt viel zu amerikanisch😨
