Foxfield Museum Manager Anthony Dawson reveals how to drive a steam train. Moss Bay is accessible via our free museum. Learn more about this engine and more when you visit. See www.foxfieldrailway.co.uk
"It uses witchcraft to fill the boiler" Absolutely hilarious. I never realized a driver's job would be so difficult on a saddle tank engine. Seems it would be counterintuitive in a marshalling yard or a colliery. Maybe people were just stronger and tougher then.
@@FoxfieldRailwayOfficial I mean, I would love to, but I’m no where near Foxfield Railway, as I live in Manchester. I have signed up to volunteer for my local heritage Railway in Bury, the East Lancashire Railway. But I wouldn’t know if I could be a steam engine driver for several reasons. 1. Im partially colourblind. I don’t know how bad but it’s in issue. I’ve been taking an Ishihara Test and gotten somewhere between Moderate sight (which is evident as I wear glasses already) and severe. 2. Even if I somehow managed to go through all this, I’d have to spend 7 years minimum as a cleaner and 3 years as a fireman first. 3. It’s a 5am start every day running. As I don’t drive, it would definitely be difficult for sure.
@@FoxfieldRailwayOfficial Really? I mean… it would be amazing! I mean, I would like to see where things go with ELR but I’d definitely chose yourselves for a second choice! 😅 I’m seriously considering it. Though I’d probably need help with transportation which means I’d probably have to get help from one of the others in Manchester if they’re doing the same day as me. Daily train transportation can be pricey and I don’t drive. 😅😣
My Dad was a fireman for 7 years before becoming a steam train driver, which he only got to do for a few years before switching to diesel, but he always said that being a fireman put muscles on his eyebrows! His party trick was crushing someone hand, he was only 5'5" and would challenge strapping body builders to shake his hand but once he started squeezing he'd have them crying like a baby! 🤣His grip was incredible!
So, I'm wanting to buy a gauge 5 steam engine, and it's price is a pretty penny, my mother on the other hand thinks I'm wasting money on something she thinks doesn't move at all, and at first, she thought I was trying to buy a real life, to person scale steam engine.
I have a Hardback DORLING KINDERSLEY DK EYEWITNESS GUIDES Book of TRAIN. Discover the story of railways - from the days of steam to the high - speed, sophisticated trains of today. In association with THE NATIONAL RAILWAY MUSEUM.
Dont worry i dont do this irl but is it decent practise to use the throttle as a steambrake , for instance to hold a speed of 25 down a 1% line with 15-16% on reversed reverser and full reg on that?
It definitely wears down the cylinders and with time they would have tl be replaced, but it was a real practice that was used on railways and was included in manuals that railway used to train their drivers

People certainly WERE a stronger physical breed! These days you have to split a shift between two fireman! And we're glad you like Anthony's wit ;)

I like trains and also I have a train running everywhere In the room
Essentially the fireman is that little gremlin under your car that sucks gasoline out of your gas tank and spits it at your pistons
You have a wonderful TV (video?) presence. Your voice is ideal for narration. I truly enjoy your videos on this and you other channel.
Thank you!
Anthony's a great guy to work with - thanks for watching and letting us know!
You have connections with Foxfield!? I have connections too 😊

My Dad worked on the railways for 49 years and was a driver for 42 years, I never once heard him call himself a train operative, always a driver!
