Thanks for buying waxworms. With plastics becoming so good I love to see you younger guys using them. 3rd generation waxworm farmer from northern Wisconsin.
Everyone around me always look at waxies like a rookie thing to use because of plastics but they just don’t bite plastics like they do waxies. I have tried lots of different plastics for walleye and perch and live bait always trumps it. Although at my local bait shop in northern Michigan it’s 7$ for a dozen walleye minnows 15$ a dozen for sucker minnows and 3$ a dozen for perch minnows. And 4$ for a small can of wax worms.
Awesome video Nick! Underwater camera really teaches about the fish and is a game changer. Excellent tips. Beautiful fish. Really one of your best videos in my opinion. Thanks for the work!
Last week, I was in an ice house about 3/4 mile offshore from Randy’s Rentals in about 18-20 feet of water. It was incredibly slow. I tried everything. Shiners, suckers, fatheads, spikes, every type of jig I had. Early morning and afternoon/evening. There were just very few fish in the area. My Vex was very quiet. It was my first time at Mille Lacs. I don’t live in the ice belt, so I rented an ice house because I don’t have a lot of the equipment you would need to hole hop. Next time, I will probably go to Leech or Winnie.
@ thanks, brother. Despite the slow bite, I was really happy being out on the lake in winter. We don’t get a lot of hard water in Texas, where I’m from. Actually, we don’t get any at all. The sunrise and sunset over the lake were pretty magical. Walking on the ice and listening to it crunch under foot and groan in the distance were soothing. I also learned a lot about technique just from using the Vex (thanks Trail Side!). So, it was definitely fun, and I really liked being up there!
Do you have a recommended resort to stay at for someone coming from SE Wisconsin? I normally have went to Lake Winnie but the perch bite has been slower the past 2 years and willing to try a new lake?
Lots of good places to stay. My buddy owns Ice Camp Outfitters if you want to sleep on the ice. But there are places all along the lake that have been targeting perch.
Hey Nick, I’m bringing my wife up to the lake this weekend. I have only ever opened water fished Mille Lacs. Since I have never ice fish on the lake, where do I drive in at on the north side to try fishing the flats and also where is the best place to get bait? Thank you.
If you're fishing the north, you can get bait at Tutts or Garrison Sport. Accessing the lake, there are a ton of different resorts with roads and bridges. You can pick whichever
Forgot to ask another question Nick about cameras and your opinion do you think the camera spooks walleyes or do you think it doesn’t matter? I just got the large aqua view and I’m eager to try it out on the lake this weekend.
Honestly, I prefer the perch videos the most. I live in Iowa it's easier for me to fish a 3lbs brown trout that it is to find perch. I live in an area where I can drive 20 minutes and catch everything from bluegill to musky , but the only place is the Mississippi River, but only for about 2 weeks in early December.
Perch populations are super cyclical on some lakes, like Mille Lacs. There are always a few big ones swimming around at any given time, but some years, you'll see big year classes that survive a few years of predation. Perch grow fast on Mille Lacs, but there's also a lot of predators that can knock down year classes quickly.

Awesome! Glad to help any way I can. I never go perch fishing without bringing some meat, and more often than not, it’s a big vat of waxies.

I won't go perch fishing without em!
New subscriber here from Southern Vermont I've watched your family fishing for years and I've learned a lot thank you for all you and your family do
Awesome video Nick!
Underwater camera really teaches about the fish and is a game changer.
Excellent tips.
Beautiful fish.
Really one of your best videos in my opinion.
Thanks for the work!
Really appreciate the feedback. I’m trying to do better and better with these videos. I’ve got some more ideas
I've been waiting for this one Bud!
Heck yeah! Gotta love those big ole yellow stripers!
Way to finish strong! Great video Nick
Thanks Tom. Honestly, I think the bite was only picking up when I started packing up.
The small flutter spoons are definitely where it's at. By far, my best bait out there this winter.
Great video Nick, thanks for sharing!
Right on! Yeah, I love flutter spoons for perch. Seems like a lot of folks recommend rattle spoons, but I've always been a fan of the flutters.
Camera/livescope combo is always so awesome! 🔥
Heck yeah. I want to do it more. It's kind of less interesting in deep water with 11-12 inch fish, but still kinda neat
Gotta love jumbo perch! Great video Nick!❤️🧊🎣
Thanks Evan. They are such a hoot
Small rippin raps are my favorite for Perch
Rattle baits are amazing. One of my favorite options for perch.
Like the camera overlayed with your jigging!! Good timing, heading there this weekend to try find the perch!!
Nice, best of luck out there, man! There's a lot of them out there and they are of impressive proportions
Love your name, legacy, and videos
Appreciate that fellow Nick!
Nice fish ❤
Thanks!

I’m sorry to hear that. Midwinter can be tough on a lot of lakes, especially if you’re fishing for walleye. I hope you do better next time out.

Headed up there tomorrow for a long weekend fishing with Tony Roach!
That's awesome! Best of luck up there. Hopefully you catch a bunch

North Mille Lacs Ice fishing will get you where you need to be.
Lots of good places to stay. My buddy owns Ice Camp Outfitters if you want to sleep on the ice. But there are places all along the lake that have been targeting perch.
Personally I don't think you make enough Videos!!!!😎😎
I agree! It's a big time commitment, but I really want to make more.

I discussed it in the video some. Walleyes definitely don't like underwater cameras in general, but especially on Mille Lacs
Great video Nick! Apologies if I missed it in the video but are you finding success on top of the mud flat or in the basin off the edge of the flat?
Hey, I talked about it in the video. I'm fishing off the break lines.
@ thank you sir, guess I need to work on my paying attention skills! 🤣
@ haha all good. It’s a really long video, so I expect folks to miss things
Last year been catch lots of 10-12inch perch on the north end of Mille lac . This year can’t find them
Man, they are definitely moving around a lot. Try a few different areas you haven’t tried before. They like deep water and mud for sure
what camera are you using for the underwater footage?
Marcum Pursuit HD
What rod was that white rod you were using?
36 inch Tuned Up Bullwhip. Great rod for panfish, perch and tulibee
What otter shack are you using?
That’s the XT Pro Lodge
Did you end up having to look for a while or just get off in the deep water off the flats?
I looked around a little bit. But you could probably just setup and have some success
Do you have any good lures south dakota ice fishing for walleye?
I would use 1/8oz Buck-Shots and Thumper Spoons. And also a small rattlebait
@ Thanks I really appreciate it keep up the good work
@@NickLindner do you ever tip it with anything
Hi nick! Headed to red again soon?
Hey! No plans at the moment, but I'm considering it. Probably not too many better spots to go right now in MN if you want some walleye
Bt fishing clackshot weight is the move for dropshotting on ice as it’s a rattling dropshot weight
That's awesome. I'm not actively jigging the weight, so I don't need it to make any noise
Teeter Pigs!! Woohoo
Woohoo indeed! It's jumbo time
Can you put the ion in reverse and shoot your slush down the hole instead of getting water all over your shack, pants and boots?
Yessir, it has reverse.
Wow! A perch fishing video. I love perch fishing as much as walleye. Thanks for another great video.
Thanks for watching, Richard. Honestly, a really good perch bite is tough to beat.

When you say the jumbo perch are back…. Aren’t the jumbo perch always in the same area?

Nick, I think you must attract the wind when you decide to head out on the ice😂 At least it didn’t blow you off the lake this time!
@ haha, I think I do bring the wind with me 😅
I didn’t know, interesting
What white rod is that, that you were using?
That’s the Tuned Up Bullwhip. It’s an amazing rod, and I really should have had a few of them rigged up for this day
@ as I figured ha ha! I got the 28” bullwhip and I love it
