She was my conductor & clinician for the New York State All-County Jazz ensemble, and she is the sweetest, most talented woman I've ever met! She was amazing and it was such an honor to be conducted by her.
There are really no words to adequately describe how utterly sublime a vocalist and performer this lady is. With due respect to the other members-all terrific vocalists , Laurel makes my heart melt when she sings a ballad like this or Heart's Desire. Beautiful in every way. I am so glad I got to see them live even just once back in the '70s.
At 16 , I was so smitten with this song , with Laurels rendition and Manhattan Transfer. I stood in my burgundy velvet thrift store dress outside the Roxy on the Sunset Strip for 3 hrs to make sure I got a good seat. It took almost 3 more decades for me to have enough faith in myself to perform as a full fledged jazz singer myself. and I do sing this scotch and soda sometimes. 💕
Beside enjoying singing that just takes me back from age 78 to age 18 riding on the riding on the train from Great Lakes of drill walkie seeing you with my wonderful friend he was from New York and there's nothing he enjoyed more than going over to my hometown in Minnesota and going to a polka dance he had the time of his life and then we'd have to run back the next day we came on Friday night at 90 miles an hour across Wisconsin Joseph J Fallon is deceased his memory lives on and there's honored what I sing this song
She visited our home when I was a teen, and what she told me about being open-minded about different performers covering a song will always stay with me.
Laurel's grandfather was Leonard Kronandonk, one of the best baritones in pop music in the 20th century. Smoothest baritone I ever heard. He was with Fred Waring and his Pennsyvanians doing one night stands for decades. My husband worked with him and we visited him and his wife often while they were living in Florida. Laurel gets her vocal chops from him
Laurel, you sing so pretty! Subdued yet bright, gentle yet strong. Love the contrasts in your voice. And all as smooth as velvet. (Oh, and I got all the words, too!) THANKS for a sweet-as-scotch version of my favorite song.
Whew.......Every time I see and hear Laural.....I laugh, I cry, I get goosbumps , I find a little bit of heaven what a wonderful voice great acting too gets right into the mood thank you
Wow...I was a huge Manhattan Transfer fan as a kid, and I never realized how beautiful Laurel's voice was. I was so sad when she left the group because I liked her better than her replacement (not taking away from Cheryl though). I agree with a previous poster...they don't make singers like this anymore. Laurel is a national treasure.
What a performance! Fantastic example of the heights to which cabaret or club type singing can reach. The phrasing and vocal control are just perfection. I accept that 100 years from now we will still be listening to The Sex Pistols, but I would like to think that we will still be listening to this too.
Ha ha ha! NOBODY will remember the Sex Pistols after the next generation...although some might be reminded when they wipe off something they stepped in.
The best arrangement and the most perfect and emotional vocal delivery of this song. Ever. Anywhere. Far better than the version on their album with just Laurel's voice solo and the band bluesing away behind her. Heaven!
Your feelings are well-taken, but I would suggest, for an extra dollop for you, the Kingston Trio version, live-ish, here on YT. I go back and forth as to which is most beatific.
@@ThrustusSimmonds Just found this! :) I have the same dillema. BUT, after 50 years of waffeling I finally decided that this was the winner. Laurel's vocal with it's great lilts, jumps, punches, soft hooks, and original phrasing is unbeatable.
This was the one that originally did it for me. Had a crush on that voice ever since. That's a long time to have a crush. I'm not the jealous type, I'm happy to see that a lot of people 'feel the way I feel' too. I'm still on Laurel's Wagon, but it's crowded up here, ha ha.
She couldn't perform after the accident, for long enough that the partnership agreement between them kicked in and required her to sell out to the others. @@roberttreadaway7853
sergios345 - Thank you for sharing this one of a kind performance by someone we do not all get to enjoy hearing anymore because she doesn't record or go on the airwaves. Thx.
i first heard this song on an old jukebox from the 1960's in 1978, it was left on the jukebox (old 45 rpm) in and old bar in a dusty corner, but was sung by female, unknown (50's or 60's singer).
Dave Guard has credit for this song, but claims his parents accquired the lyrics & melody in a bar while on their honeymoon. I've no idea what the truth is but it makes a good story.
This is a good interpretation, but it will always be Bob Shane's song to me. I knew him and told him that once, but he said no. It's a great song and ought to be performed by others, not just him. Rumor has it, though, that Sinatra liked Shane's version and would not do the song
It wasn't just a near fatal crash she was in. Her jaw was wired up, so for years she could not open her mouth wide enough to sing properly and hit the high notes like she could before. And MT wanted to continue their career. So she was replaced in the end.
Rafael Storm She may have also been fed up with the exhausting recording/touring schedule that was demanded of the group. The company they were contracted with saw them as a 'growth revenue stream'.

Beautifully sung by a beautiful songbird.....laurel ❤️
This is one of my favorite songs by the Manhattan Transfer.
Laurel Masse’s rendition was simply superb. Such a lovely voice.
This is my favorite rendition of this song. Her voice is perfect. Angelic! :)

Leonard and Elsie were my grandparents. My dad was Robert. Glad I saw this tonight.
Don't I remember your father singing "The Happy Wanderer" with your grandfather?@@garykranendonk8627

Nearly forty years later, still awesome. And gorgeous.

Incredible ! What incredible vocal control and tone. Great voice for this great song.
She's one of the best female singers ever.
And not bad to look at either.
Very pretty
High on life and the sweet tones of Laurel
Laurel just takes this to another level, unbelievable.

sultry, beautiful tone. Laurel is my preference. and all that emotion and passion, where its appropriate. yes! indeed.
Laurel is a beautiful woman in every way, and man is she talented

Love this song
scotch? martini? gin?
No, the most intozicating is Laurel's voice....just sublime!
thanks for posting...
Laurel is so awesome!
She just caresses those lyrics...magnificent
One of my favorite songs growing up. Still...*whew*

Such a shame Laurel left MT. Cheryl was a fantastic find, but no doubt, Laurel was awesome too. Miss her . Wolfsky9, 69 y/o

This lady still drives me just nuts, and I'm pretty old. Thanks so much for the post.
Came across this video clip quite by chance and WOW, what a find!!!
Absolutely brilliant!
Wow so special - solo or part of MT truly a class talented performer.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
Great Torch singer
She's wonderful!!!
Chulada de mujer Laurel Massé de mi corazón...
Beautiful reminds me of the alcoholics in the 1960s including my drunken father.
All class!
I love Laurel Masse! Wooooo is Beautiful!!!
Stellar!
One helluva 30 year ride. Finally put it down 20 years ago. RIP.
I love all the MT performances but Laurel's always been the one for me. Don't like it when she gets too raunchy - when she's sweet she's untouchable.
I'm convinced that some people are born to sing.
‘Oh my’ indeed!!
Laurel Masse is genius!
あー溶けそうなくらい。お上手。歌手とはこの人です。魅力的。歌を楽しんでいます。
intoxicating and wonderful

It's all true...for me it was 1965 a party, a male trio version.. it'll come to me.
lisa8220 The Kingston Trio, perhaps?
It is a very complicated story, and ultimately, nobody really onows who wrote it. Wikipedia has a really interesting take on the matter.
Oh how beautiful.
could you imagine being a baritone surrounded by laurel, Cheryl and Janis....talk about "beautiful music"
I think I'm in Love!! Or at least a strong case of Like. :-)
Can you say, "torch song"?
oh me, oh my
do I feel high....
do I feel high? every time I hear Laurel.
she make me fly with the stars
OMG I love her!
The best!
she's the best!
Somehow, Laurel is sexier and more beautiful than the Kingston Trio when she sings this wonderful song... (!!!)
Now Laurel and Janis return to sing TOGETHER AGAIN !! they have formed together with Lauren Kinhan the vocal group called "JALALA"
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Will you marry me???? Jokes aside, Laurel what a performance! Love it. Thanks for a thrill, Bob
Fair play girl - best version by far .....
not quite....Kingston Trio is still the best....but this is quality as well.
She takes a tough one and makes it seem soooo easy :0
check out "walk of love" with Laurel in Hawaiian gear and tel me its not the sexiest thing you have ver seen
Mean *Walk in Love*
Nice cover of a Kingston Trio song.

yes agreed me too.
and now for something completely different...IT'S...(okay, how many have been trained...) She has a beautiful voice!
Well I was born in wrong generation I'm on Gen Z. Laurel was born in Baby Boomer Generation. Well she's beautiful woman and her voice too.
class act
sweet
@ThePENON Please take a number.
one of my fave mantran songs. although the alternate lyrics you can make r a wee bit funny...
I aspire to her delivery!
1972-1979 ????
Walk in love was 1984 ????
Wow...It happened again...sigh

I'm hearing Billy Holliday
She looks a lot like actress Susan Sarandon.
She has a good voice, but I like the male voices better.
YES IFEEL HIGH STILL TRIUMPH
Sorry, Bentyne´s voice is marvellous but Laurel´s version of Blue Champagne it´s far away the best version of it.
I wonder what the real reason was that she left the Transfer. An auto accident is hardly a reason to give up a permanent gig.
It wasn't just a near fatal crash she was in. Her jaw was wired up, so for years she could not open her mouth wide enough to sing properly and hit the high notes like she could before. And MT wanted to continue their career. So she was replaced in the end.
paul benson Thank you!

paul benson good info.......thanks
In an interview she said she wanted to go solo and would have left even without the accident.
