It's important to consider 3 things when deciding your build based on the facts. First is that genius wand provides a debuff, so your teamates also benefit from it in teamfights. Magic power and penetration items only benefit you. Second is that even though genius wand scales quite well with hero level, it's still an early game item, whereas the video test uses a level 15 hero with 5/6 items. If you're comparing 2 items in the late game, it might be possible that 1 item is slightly worse than the other in the late game, but much stronger in the early game, so it would be worth trading off the slight late game advantage for strong early game advantage.
Third, it's important to note that genius wand + divine glaive isn't exactly a synergistic "combo" like genius wand and glowing wand and more so a build progression based on different game stages. In fact, like you showed, genius wand actually pulls back the potential of the divine glaive by reducing the enemy's magic def. What I also mean by that the "combo" is like Hunter Strike or Blade of the Heptaseas and Malefic Roar. Those items are not considered a combo. It's more so that assassins will build Hunter Strike and/or Blade of the Heptaseas in the early game and then Malefic Roar in the late game because the former provides strong early game flat pen (esp with fury hammer and assassin emblem with rupture), whereas Malefic Roar provides strong late game pen. For Divine Glaive, it's actually mid and late game penetration because they didn't nerf it like Malefic roar, lol.
Yes, Genius is much stronger early. I actually covered this in another video, but did not cover it here since the point of is to test both together, which I doubt anyone will be buying both early to mid. But yes, you can go for Genius early then sell it off later for stronger late game items 😁

I feel like people were overestimating the passive of Genius Wand, because I didn't buy it on anyone else besides Aamon and Harley and other multihit mages shown in the video. I might start to include it if they happen to nerf the Divine Glaive like Malefic Roar.
The thing is that it stacks one which another, if you have Chang'e, Gusion and Guinevere for example, all 3 of them build Genius and hit all 3 the tank and have the passive at max, it would have -63 defense
I literally build genius + glaive on almost every burst magic damage hero i have. It has earlier power spike and nullifies magic defence built in the mid game
@@banana1379 I play kadita and faramis most of the time and don't really clear my lane and give it to my EXP or JG most of the, cuz I like getting roam boots and get the benefit from it at 8 minutes

I see... I usually run Genius -> Holy -> Concentrated -> Divine -> Blood wings set on Joy. And these build is used by almost all Joy users. But maybe selling Genius in the lategame and change it to Glowing wand will be much better
What I learn (I didn't paid much attention):
Genius Glaive combo works great for Poke/low magic scale heroes while Divine Crystal works well with Burst/medium scale heroes

Depends on mage, eudora yes from exp, but some no need pen, some rely other items
I honestly just use both in mages cuz Genius helps with squishies and Glaive helps with Tanks/Fighter

What a disgusting discovery that genius+glaive is much better for burst. I have always rushed crystal third or fourth but now I will always leave it for last. Then I will exchange genius for bloodwings. Gord being better with spellvamp than crystal was also surprising.
Yeah, results were quite eye-opening to me too. IMO it can be further tested with full 5 damage items if you want to.
I was waiting for zhask tho, he can use any item combo from the video either burst or dps. But it seems zhask is too hard to do the test bcs his spawn is continuously attacking.

Best situation that the GENIUS + GLAIVE combo will be used in full glory is when the enemy has Athena’s shield and radiant armor both equipped. Even better with tough boots.
With these two or three items, the tank uses this emblem set-up:
🟠 tank emblem
🔴 firmness
🟠 tenacity
🔴 brave smite / 🟠 concussive blast
Your emblem set-up for genius + glaive combo must be this:
🟣 assassin emblem
🟣 rupture
🔵 bargain hunter / 🟡 weapon master
⚪️ impure rage / 🔵 lethal ignition
One MISCONCEPTION is that *MAGE EMBLEM should be used on MAGES and HEROES OF OTHER ROLES THAT DEAL MAGIC DAMAGE.* Let me tell you that *this is TRUE IN OLD EMBLEM SET-UP, BUT FALSE IN CURRENT EMBLEM SET-UP.*
Mage emblem is the most powerful emblem for magic damage before it is revamped. It has five base attributes:
🔵 17 magic power
🔵 5% cooldown reduction
🔵 13.5 magic penetration
🔵 5% magic lifesteal
🔵 2% movement speed
The current mage emblem is weak, with only three base attributes:
🔵 32 magic power
🔵 5% cooldown reduction
🔵 8 magic penetration
The mage emblem of old is equal to the assassin emblem of old in terms of damage. Now, the current assassin emblem outclasses mage emblem in terms of damage.
Assassin Emblem
🟣 16 adaptive penetration
🟣 10 adaptive attack
🟣 3% movement speed
Assassin emblem is the most powerful of all the seven emblems in the game, regardless of your hero dealing physical or magic damage. Tank emblem is the close second, followed by support emblem. Mage emblem is by far the weakest emblem, with its stats only benefitting heroes that deal strictly magic damage.
But if *you do not care* about the passives of both genius wand and divine glaive, and *you just want damage, damage, damage, and MORE DAMAGE* regardless of who you face, you can use this combo freely, with the emblem of your choice.
Yes finally the ONE video that i requested to discuss in detail on magic pen topic. You vid always make me change the setting !! Love and hate at the same :) There are surprises in some of the result but i think in general i stick to the rule for squisy use genius + glowing. For tanky genius + divine glaive. Maybe few hero exception after your video. Nowaday i main julian more because using above concept, i can chop squishy full bar in 2 sec like a tafu. Tanky in about 5 sec, which is really crazy. Anyway, as usual yet another high grade video . Keep up the good work!!

I'd still rather build Genius Wand in my mage builds, the bonus dmg from other items isn't that detrimental imo but the bonus move-speed the item provides paired with Ice Queen Wand and the bonus 4% from emblems make such a huge difference for Immobile Mages like Gord, Luo Yi etc..
In the end studying is a must even in games🦁
this is what im saying to my friends, that they shouldn't use them together because it counters one another and it will not become effective since the *genius wand* reduces enemies defense while *divine glaive* increases damage based on enemies max magic defense

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! I was always confused between wanting to keep genius alongside glaive in order to maximise pen, but i see it really depends on the innate magic dmg scaling of the heroes, as well as the emblem used.
My question: would genius + glaive be needed on Joy(assuming assassin base emblem), whose role is to target the backline as much as possible? Or would it be better for Joy to use the Genius + Glowing/Holy Crystal combo early, but sell Genius for Glaive lategame?
😇 Yeah, it really depends, so always do testing if you wanna make sure.
Not too sure about Joy - I'd try going Genius Glowing Glaive, especially versus Tanky lineups. Maybe swap Genius for Holy if there's not much Magic Defense built. But, I really can't be sure since I haven't tested.
damage mainly comes from glowing
reason: glowing passive does dmg based on hp percent, hence it can do more dmg vs tanky targets
glowing passive dealing hp based damage is also not the only reason because it also increases the magic damage taken to enemies

Glowing contributes alot of base damage, but without Penetration the base damage can be whittled down to almost nothing against tanky targets.

Yeah, Glowing + Glaive is key to her for doing decent damage against tanky targets. Without either one, she doesn't do much against a target with Radiant 😇

I knew I wasn't tripping. Genius Wand is an overrated item.
I only build it when the enemy are stacked with MR but generally people in Low Mythic are dumb, they sometimes dont even build Athena.
It's still plenty strong in the right situations 😇
Genius is unique in the fact that it actually DOES STACK between allies, onto enemy heroes.
Having multiple Genius Wands on your team can lower enemies Magic Defense a lot.
You could theoretically run ~3 of them on your team, while having 3 high-tick magic damage heroes to utilize the defense reduction to the max. In that case, having both pen items would be the best option, in attempts to have the enemy get to negative magic armor. Probably through passives like Harley, Silvanna, Hilda, Carmilla ect;
Yes, that's a unique and potentially abuse-able mechanic
However, if you're the only Magic DPS hero, you better ditch Genius Wand (This is the case for most highrank matches)
I am having trouble calculating with my main Novaria. From I understood, glowing and glavie is almost always better on any mage. Did I understand correctly? Even it wasn’t better it was still very close. Please correct me if I’m wrong
Not always. Certain mages can't really use Glowing effectively too. It really depends

It's pretty good in the early, or if the enemy does not build a single Magic Defense item. But it's common that Divine Glaive will outclass Genius Wand in the late game 😄

not me completely forgetting that the combo is an anti synergy 💀 still wreck house with gusion with it tho 💪 i should probably use divine glaive more later into the game if enemy built magic def bc currently i use it as a 3rd or 4th item and change it to glowing wand

After testing i am saying that the damage count when EVERY dagger hits (middle game where u only have boots and 2 items) Divine glaive x genius wand vs genius wand x glowing wand are on par with eachother
with this said id prefer glaive bc with glowing wand u have to be precise to get the best reward for it while it being on par with divine glaive as u need to hit enemy more than 6 times to make use of the passive to its full effects

I also did lategame level 15 with athena but thats it bc i normally reach my game domination at lvl 7 and tested athena level 15 to ensure what amount of damage i do if the squishies like mages or marksmen built athena
any more testing than that i dont really need bc i only rlly target those types of enemies

After having some consideration, I still think Gen Glaive is the perfect middle ground for most multi-hit magic dmg dealers. Cuz you have genius wand thats very strong in the early game against squishies, then you have divine glaive thats strong against tankies, when you combine both which have very slightly contradicting passives, can still find a good balance of dmg against each type of enemies respectively. And if all the enemies including squishies EVER starts buying magic res items, then u can sell the genius for smth better for maximum dmg output.
What surprised me is the dmg of Glow Glaive xD because glowing wand is similar to genius wand in terms of trigger conditions and dmg increase to enemies, glowing doesnt have the -MR reduction allowing divine glaive to have its full potential. I might consider changing a few builds to Glowing + Divine xD
Yeah, the combo is a fine middle ground when you're still weighing your options, and sometimes even the best option. Glowing Wand actually has some crazy damage output, especially on the right heroes!

How the change of lighting truncheon item change the way we build heroes? Do we still need Clock of Destiny? If no, how about our mana?
At the current state of the changes, COD won't be needed since LT won't need mana anymore. I'll wait for it to be finalised and in the original server before making any conclusions tho.

On Valir, Concentrated Energy grants sustainability, so I want that.
My take away is Genius Wand is very situational to favor heroes with low magic power scaling, so next best thing is magic pen as source of damage.
But CE only offers little sustainability and function, you better off using IQW and Festival of Blood to gain the same amount of Spell Vamp
IQW is a given, not to be replaced.
I use the jungle movement emblem. I feel like losing some damage from genius wand is worth it for a bit more hp and spell vamp. Valir isn't a burst mage after all.

Glaive will always be weakened by Genius' Passive, but it depends on the situation whether that is detrimental or not
Genius wand and Divine Glaive isn't ever in conflict with one another.
They have updated the damage penetration formula for a good while now. It's available to check in game. Go to heroes tab>Lesley>Check her passive description>then tap Note. The formula is there. Percentage PEN is calculated first then Flat PEN is computed at the end.
Up for this. I know I remember this one when they last adjusted the defense growth for all heroes.
You are right... except that I wasn't talking about Flat PEN for Genius Wand. They key here and I have to really highlight this because I get told this same thing alot - I was specifically talking about the Magic Defense Reduction effect from Genius Wand:
Unique Attribute: +10 Magic PEN
Unique Passive - Magic: Dealing damage to enemy heroes will reduce their Magic Defense by 2~9 for 2s (the Defense reduction scales with level). Stacks up to 3 times.
In the calculation of the Damage Multiplier, Defense Reduction effects are prioritized before both %PEN and Flat PEN. So Defense Reduction is applied first, before any PEN is calculated. Flat PEN of course benefits, since it's a fixed value. But %PEN loses value because the lower the DEF value, the lower PEN it has. Note that Genius Wand isn't the only thing in the game that has Defense Reduction. Heroes like Silvana, Harley and Eudora also have Defense Reduction. How do I know this? Well, I've tested this before and calculated it to exact values. 😇

Divine & genius combo is still the besg option u dont need to buy more dmg if enemy will buy radiant armor which mean more saving gold
meta after new emblems, using mage with assasin emblem + adaptive penetration. i prefer genius wand as second or third, having genius wand after boots can already burst a lot. glaive only when its late game where the tank or fighter have their magic def stacked . or if you can manage to kill without trouble then buy immortal instead of glaive.

I think we should take note that genius wand is better equipped on the first 3 item. Pick glaive on 4th instead since enemy start adding defense item on that slot.
