Armenian genocide: survivors recall events 100 years on

  • In 1915 a million people were brought through what is now Turkey and walked to their deaths near Deir-al-Zour in modern Syria. One hundred years on, only a handful of survivors remain to tell the stories of the Armenian genocide, which they witnessed.
    by Diana Markosian
A hundred years after the Armenian genocide, filmmaker Diana Markosian found two survivors who witnessed deportation, death, and denial of the events of 1915. Together they journeyed back to the past.
I was never interested in pursuing work on the Armenian genocide. When I started this project, it was still just a vague historical narrative. I knew that, in 1915, the Ottomans initiated a policy of deportation and mass murder to destroy their Armenian population. And that, by the First World War’s end, more than a million people were eliminated from what is now modern-day Turkey. But I had no idea of the personal toll the genocide exacted on my own family, or the sense of connection I would slowly come to feel through making this piece.
I am Armenian, but I was born in Moscow and raised in America. For most of my life, I struggled with my Armenian identity, partly because of the history one inherits. It is something I understood but never fully embraced. Then a year ago, I happened to be in Armenia when a foundation approached me, requesting help in finding the remaining genocide survivors. I pursued voter registrations online to see who was born before 1915, and then traveled cross-country to find them. That’s how I met Movses and Yepraksia - who lived past their hundredth year.
When I met them, they shared with me memories of their early homes. Movses was born in the village of Kebusie in Musa Dagh Mountain not far from the Syrian border. Yepraksia lived in a small village near Kars on the Armenian border. They hadn’t seen their home since escaping a century ago. I wanted in some way reunite each of the survivors with their homeland. I decided to travel back Turkey to re-trace their last memories.
When I told the survivors I would be visiting their native land, each one asked me to fulfill a wish. Movses, from Musa Dagh, drew a map of his village, and asked me to find his church and leave his portrait on the footsteps of what are now ruins. He hadn’t seen his home in 98 years. In his village, I found everything he had described to me: the sheep, the fruit he remembered eating, and the sea. I even found the ruins of what was once his church. Yepraksia, from a small village in Kars, asked me to help her find her older brother who she separated from after 1915.
Once I returned to Armenia, I created billboard-sized images of the survivors’ homelands as a way of bridging the past and present. All these years later, upon delivering the image, the survivors grabbed on, as if by holding the image close they would be taken back to a place they called home many years ago. This is a story of home - everything they had, everything they lost. And what they have found again.

92Iowa Country Turkey is the one who is reforming and forming stories my firend, it is not that strange, there are many refugees here in Armenia and around the world who were telling those sstories for around decades, not only Armrenians but other nations as well, you even may find many Kurdish families that bare the stories, the fact that there was a Genocide has been proved long ago, the recognition still remains matter of politics

Have you ever heard of the Khojaly Armenian Massacre of Turks 27 years ago? In 1992, Armenian forces closed the entrance and exit of Khojaly town between February 25th and February 26th. A total of 613 Azerbaijani people, 83 children, 106 and over 70 years of age, were brutally killed and 487 seriously injured.
Eight families were extinct, 487 were disabled and 1275 were taken captive. A total of 150 people, 68 women and 28 children, are still unknown.
Daud Kheriyan, an Armenian journalist living in the brutality of the Khojaly Massacre, tells the story of what happened that day: The Armenian group responsible for the burning of the Armenian funeral brought 100 Azerbaijani deaths to a kiln called Gaflan on March 2; I saw a 10-year-old girl in the last truck. Head and hand were injured. His face was bruised. Despite cold, hunger and wounds, he was still alive. He couldn't breathe. His eyes were filled with fear of death. Then a soldier named Tigranyan caught him and threw him to the other bodies. then they burned all the objects. I felt like I heard a scream among burning objects. There was nothing I could do ”

@@abdullahamabood5693 Maybe a lot more than you do , buddy. The FLN , however TERRORIZED the Algerian population to work for them. The FLN DID NOT win the war of independence. There were more than ONE MILLION of ' PIED NOIRS ' in Algeria , and they were an integral part of France. The reason General De Gaulle was called in by the French Establishment , was to make the severance of Algeria from France possible and palatable. Atrocities ? It was a SPIRAL of dirty work made by BOTH sides. The exit of PIED NOIR middle class from Algeria , sent that country into economic chaos , from which it took years to recover. Furthermore , Ahmed Ben Bella - who remained more time in prisons , both French & Algerian , than as a leader or President - did not get to work immediately after independence , but spent valuable time at international summits. That's when Col. Boumedienne took over. The following years were times of economic mismanagement , and then the terrible fundamentalist violence that shook the country. Rwanda ? An ancestral tribal hatred that spurred the atrocities of the late 90's , and where ALL foreign powers intervened , not only the French , who ARE NOT ANGELS , by the way , but to fingerpoint them as the cause for Africa's troubles is not only wrong , but DUMB , as well. The Africans have themselves to blame. The slave trade that began in the XVI Century , would never have been possible without African complicity. African tribes selling out members of their own tribes , or from rival tribes. As to Civil Wars , I can still remember the atrocious Nigerian Civil War of the late 60's. The Hausas decimating the Ibos. I'm still haunted by the awful photos of the Biafran malnourished children. It's YOU AFRICANS who HAVE TO PUT YOUR SHOW TOGETHER. Blaming others for your own misfortunes is not only wrong , but demagogic and cowardly. As for the ARABS , the Gulf Wars , the Assault on Libya , the rape of Lebannon , the aggression to Syria , and the horrible war in Yemen , would have never happened if you had been united. Nasser left a void , which has never been covered. Finally , Algeria & France have developed close economic , social & cultural ties that spill into politics. The French have to acknowledge that their Arab / African immigrant population has to be completely assimilated. France , in fact has always been a ' melting pot '. Algeria , by a bureaucratic stroke can impose English as their second language . However that will not move her away from the Mediterranean and to the bonds it holds with the French.

After less than a century of colonization , that number had dwindled down into little more than one million. Do I blame Spain for it ? It's easy to do so , but that's the way ' civilizations ' come and go. May all the victims rest in peace and god bring peace to the few remaining survivors. May their voice be heard even when they are long gone and the genocidal state of Turkey be held accountable.

Turks are not the only culprits of the events. During the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1922) Ataturk's ultranationalist forces pushed out all the allies, the Brits from Constantinople, the Greeks from Smyrna, the French in Cilicia, and the Armenians in Kars. And during this time the majority of Greeks were expelled to Greece and the extermination of the Armenians was completed, alongside Turkey's Islamification.

@Emirhan Bayraktar thousands versus millions... the ottomans tried to eliminate an entire race because of a single vaguely-terroristy group that was reacting to ottoman policies. I still don't see how eliminating a race can be justified. Plus, it's been 100 years! Why should we accept it? There is ethnic cleansing going on, but it would be a disaster for our country to accept it. There will also be compensation for our bad economy, and worst of all, they may demand land from us. Why should we risk these for no reason? Moreover, it is wrong to blame all Turks in these events. In addition, there are Turks killed by Armenians while occupying Anatolia, and these are as many as the Armenians who died. There is also the Mora genocide that the Greeks committed against the Turks when they gained their independence, and the massacres and genocides when they occupied Western Anatolia.

There are atrocities happening everywhere but the mainstream media highlights only what it needs to.
In Pakistan, many Hindu-Sikh girls are abducted, raped and converted by Pakistanis and yet no one dares speak of it. India decided to create a law named CAA which would give citizenship to these minorities suffering in neighbouring Islamic countries like Pakistan Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Yet everyone, even American media tried to portray Indian Govt as "fascist" for it and violent riots orchestrated by Indian Muslims occurred.
Kashmir region, the so called disputed region between India, Pakistan and China(it's Indian territory, Pak and China are illegal occupiers by every means) had a minority Hindu population and now it's much less. They had to flee.
In 1990, Pakistani funded terrorists along with the support of local Muslims, committed genocide on Kashmiri Hindus and ordered them to "Convert, leave or die."
Afghan Hindus and Sikhs took refuge in India and the Western countries too when Taliban took over.
None of the mainstream media will ever show this.

I think only simpletons hate an entire nation of people. Personally as an Armenian, who’s grandfather survived this genocide, I still don’t hate Turks.... I hate the government though for hiding this atrocity and having to hear my grandfather (aged 9) or an entire ethnic group somehow deserved for their entire family to be tortured & killed . Its a sensitive topic as is the holocaust to Jews, but because it is not recognised by the Turkish government who sidelines the issues, we hear denial from Turkish people constantly which is painful. Although I understand this is what is taught to Turkish people (however spoken to many who recognise it as a genocide) and so don’t blame them for this, it’s not their fault. So my friend, we cool :D

Who knows there might have been no conflict between the two but if you look at what Turks believed then they were racist against any one who wasn't Turk! That was their belief . @@andremaster1752 Oh So now your claiming that Armenians never killed turks and kurds in hundreds of thousands?
And yet you never talk about Genocides commited by the West against their colonial subjects. In Congo alone, 10-15 million Congolese were killed by King Leopold of Belgium. And those people were treated far more worse than what you classify as 2nd class citizens. On the other hand considering that Armenians also held very high ranking positions is also an important factor. But you dont care because those people were not Europeans, they did not have any value whatsoever like the Armenians did. And lastly you dare to ignore all those massacres commited by the Armenians against the local Muslim Turks and Kurds. Also the Armenians would certinly not be viewied as friends considering that they joined the ranks of the Ottoman enemies and fought against their own government (Ottoman Empire). Fun fact the Russian army had Armenian battalions composed of more than 150,000 Armenians. They fought against their own government infavour of the enemy and guided them when they were invading the Ottoman lands and they sabotaged the Ottoman army and caused them to lose against the Russians in the Caucasus. Also their terrorist orginizations killed hundreds of top Turkish officials and diplomats. Also I would like mention that in 1896 Armenians took the Central Ottoman Bank in Constantinople and every one in it hostage. They threatened to blow up the places into ashes and after they were granted safe passage by France to France.

as a meskhetian turk taking refugee here in turkey, i hope armenian people understand that not all of us hate them, not all of us support aggressive politics that our leader participates in, not all of us are biased when it comes to war. i'd like to see the human side of everything as a humanist, and as a grandchild of my ancestors who got killed during the deportation, i'm upset to say that we share similar pasts. i hope, from the bottom of my heart that the recent events won't affect what we see at each other as humans. may everyone innocent who got killed during war rest in peace.

Missed a huge translation at 7:10 he said “would I forgive you? Forgive 1.5 million deaths you murdered? No I won’t forgive.” There was just no writing it said “no I won’t forgive”

My great grandfather had to escape that. he had 7 siblings and by the time they got out, only him and his older sister where left. The rest where eather killed or starved to death. I can't imagin what that felt like losing pretty much his entire family. I've never met him but I still feel sad when I think about it

My family narrowly escaped German execution in hamburg my grandfather would take his kids to the Tiergarten and explore the woods and mountains. When I see German forest now, all I can think of is the camps. I could feel every drop of pain in these voices.
