here again...it's so obvious from these older interviews (that I wasn't privy to when I was younger)...that Bowie was very kind, yet smart...and he's frustrated with people and while struggling to be nice, he has to endure idiots.
He looks very 'healthy' here. Like he's had a good holiday and a few good meals in him...If the interviewers would shut up maybe we'd learn more about where he's at at this point.
I love it when he says he was "totally anonymous in Berlin, they couldn't care less about..." his face is so serious and just grabs your attention and emotion, the man is human perfection.
bassman619 Thanks, man, that's what i thought. I vaguely remembered them as the two clownish singers (great singers btw) from Just Another Band (great album btw..;) and recognized their faces as I recently caught a late re-run of the 200 motels movie and watched for a little while (still un-watchable lol).
"Is still very hard for anybody to realize that a rock artist can go on stage and be a different person every time he goes on stage." That's it. THAT'S IT, BOWIE!
+nixter417 True, and I think that sometimes in the 80s he looked like a mix between Jack Nicholson and Pierce Brosnan. Maybe that's just me... Anyway, he seemed like an amazing man.
The interviewers/hosts are Flo & Eddie (Howard Kaylan [with beard] and Mark Volman [with glasses]). In the 60's they were the founding members and lead singers of The Turtles ("Happy Together", "Elenore"), later as Phlorescent Leech & Eddie they were members of Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention ("Chunga's Revenge", "Fillmore East 1971", "Just Another Band from LA", "200 Motels") and made some records as "Flo & Eddie". They also sang background vocals for T.Rex ("Hot Love" and others), Alice Cooper, Bruce Springsteen ("Hungry Heart"), Blondie ("Autoamerican"), Psychedelic Furs ("Forever Now"), Ramones ("Mondo Bizarro"), Duran Duran ("Thank You") and a lot of others.
This is brilliant to see at last. And as some have noted here the interviewers were not really up to the job. That's because they were faded 60s popstars who fronted LA group The Turtles and later sang for Zappa. I don't know how they landed this gig but I wish they didn't constantly interrupt Bowie. Even so he's still polite and patient with them. Ever the gentleman as well as the genius. Thanks for posting.
Rewatching these old interviews of Bowie reminds me of old clips of John Lydon and Mark E Smith. In early clips all three took themselves quite seriously whereas in recent interviews humour and light heartedness is much more in evidence. Older and mellower perhaps...
+As Rai The Fall are a love/hate band. you either 'get them' or you dont. Personally l love them but dont care for recent recorded output but seeing them live is always at least interesting.
Hearing him talk about the themes & ideas to do with ziggy is pretty awesome. Sounds like he's got a pretty deep understanding of not just music but literature as well and alot of scope to his vision.
I swear every David Bowie interview I've seen, the interviewers are complete shit. Always cutting David off, asking stupid questions, being rude. Ugh! It's such a shame. Such an interesting and influential man really should have been given the time to be heard and asked worth while questions!
nixter417 That is the first thing I thought too (he looks a bit like Clint Eastwood in this phase).. Exactly the first thing that came into my mind!!!!
No wonder Bowie hated giving interviews. God forbid these two would actually let the poor guy get a word in edgewise. You could see that he was going to get into some really interesting ideas but they'd talk over him. Why did they even interview Bowie if they just wanted to hear themselves talk?
This is a fantastic interview from Bowie's most fertile musical period - at least from Bowie's perspective. It's a shame that the Turtles kept stepping on his words, because what we're getting from Bowie here is quite special.
aside from jim morrison I dont think there's ever been a rock star w/ such a grasp of character, crowd psychology & societal culture. very bright & perceptive artist.
Personally, I think the interuptions are awkward but it's an interesting interview that covers a lot of ground-- they seem to really understand each other. It's a good interview.
The interviewers are Mark Volmann & What's His Name . Flo & Eddie from the Turtles Who had a big hit in the 60's with Happy Together . The also toured & recorded a few times with Frank Zappa . Sounds like I made it all up right ?
It's pretty mind-blowing to think Low, Heroes, The Idiot and Lust for Life were ALL released this year. This period was his high-point for me - still youngish and full of fascination with things but no longer talking complete s**t in interviews. Nice hair too.
The interviewers are David`s friends Flo & Eddie, formerly of The Turtles and later with Frank Zappa`s Mothers as Floresent Leach And Eddie, great song writers and performers, "So Happy Together"........
Love this cos it sums up the difference between us and them lovely Yanks. Think the interviewers are pissed off because 7.25 is a long time to go without a doughnut. (that's a donut)
He was terrific at giving interviews. You can see that the interviewers didn't need to do much to get loads from him - except they fucked it up with so many stupid interruptions! Gah!
Flo and Eddie are apparently pretty stoned. They certainly would not be allowed on stage with Frank Zappa in the condition that they are in on this interview. For those who do not know, Zappa employed Flo and Eddie, formerly of The Turtles, in 1970 and 1971. Bowie and Zappa are some of the best EVER!!!!
i have seen: the who, the viollent femmes, good charlotte(i was right in front in that one and i could have like touched there shoes if i wanted too lol), the counting crows, R.E.M, modest mouse, and they might be giants. i really want to see neil young, paul mccartney, and david bowie!!!
@imgoing2hellcom The interviewers are Flo & Eddie friends of David`s from The Turtles and later with Frank Zappa and The Mothers, it`s not like a "real" interview, the one who posted this shopuld have made a note about it.
here again...it's so obvious from these older interviews (that I wasn't privy to when I was younger)...that Bowie was very kind, yet smart...and he's frustrated with people and while struggling to be nice, he has to endure idiots.
They are baked. I almost got a contact high from this video. Damn
this interview is awesome. I love Bowie since I was a little girl, he's so inspiring. I'm preparing my graduation thesis about Berliner Trilogy.
He looks very 'healthy' here. Like he's had a good holiday and a few good meals in him...If the interviewers would shut up maybe we'd learn more about where he's at at this point.
Tottaly agree
+elijah pink Such an unpleasant people!!! They ruin all the interview!
I love it when he says he was "totally anonymous in Berlin, they couldn't care less about..." his face is so serious and just grabs your attention and emotion, the man is human perfection.
a real gentleman and a scholar
5:52 Interviewer: Tell us about Kenya.
Bowie: What do you wanna know about Kenya?
Interviewers: sdfasdjsdfjksdfjdkflsfjhjshd
Bowie: Okay, well um..
lol
ugh he's saying such fascinating things and is fighting to be heard by those damn interviewers!
They are high as hell lmao
I know, they were so rude.
such a well mannered man and a genius composer
I love his voice
OMG! David's laugh at 5:50 is perhaps the cutest thing I've ever heard. This man's a genius.
Flo and Eddie were baked, like they always were. David Bowie was the only clean and sober person in that room.
+bassman619 Are those the guys who worked and toured with Frank Zappa?
Yep. You can hear them on Just Another Band from LA and Fillmore East. Insane isn't the word to describe, but as always pure genius!
bassman619 Thanks, man, that's what i thought. I vaguely remembered them as the two clownish singers (great singers btw) from Just Another Band (great album btw..;) and recognized their faces as I recently caught a late re-run of the 200 motels movie and watched for a little while (still un-watchable lol).
Howard and I.
looks his most handsome at this time. late 70s. just being himself and off drugs
aww i love when he talks about taking his son to Africa :)
"Is still very hard for anybody to realize that a rock artist can go on stage and be a different person every time he goes on stage."
That's it. THAT'S IT, BOWIE!
He's always such an incredible interviewee. Great stuff!
LET THE MAN TALK
No artist in the world is as good as Bowie to speak. The man was a super genius. Those who have a different opinion are idiots
What can I say? I've said it so many times...what a sweetheart!
Jeez. This is an excellent example of how NOT to interview someone.
Hahaha David the world is on your side! Loved how he insisted in finishing the sentence.. He's the one
lovely lovely feelgood interview....flo and eddie are great.....you can see david really liked and trusted them
I love him, so intelligent and beautiful
this guy speaks so bloody well...bowie for prime minister!
brilliant
He looks a bit like Clint Eastwood here haa.
+nixter417 True, and I think that sometimes in the 80s he looked like a mix between Jack Nicholson and Pierce Brosnan. Maybe that's just me... Anyway, he seemed like an amazing man.
+My Biz He has a little bit of the Les Dawson about him
+nixter417 The cover of Changestwobowie look...The interviewer looks like a cross between Mike Love and some strange guru.
The interviewers are so noisy - not listening not giving time.
To late now - RIP David!
+Tom Miller It's Flo and Eddie. You realize they are his friends, right? Sheesh.
Flo and Eddi - more than friends - of Mothers?
yep, he is really something..
his curiosity is legendary.
He continues to develope himself and his music, even to this day - THATS admirable!!
Kudos to Bowie for not round housing those idiots in the face. Man, were they ever annoying!
Round housing...what a visual!
A serious ass kicking interface was due here.
I could listen to him talk all day! Not sure about the other two though haha
I'm just trying to think of any currently popular pop/rock star who could talk this eloquently and intelligently. I don't think they exist.
David Bowie is one of the greatest musical legends of all time. Those hippies should shut the hell up and let the man speak
The interviewers/hosts are Flo & Eddie (Howard Kaylan [with beard] and Mark Volman [with glasses]).

Damn... he looks extremely gorgeous in this interview!
Loved Flo and Eddie's "Blind DAte" Radio show! David you are beautiful!
What a brilliant bloke.
Bowie so sweet to these two
and completely right about Berlin
This is brilliant to see at last. And as some have noted here the interviewers were not really up to the job. +Jamie Davis Can you please help me to understand the appeal of Mark E Smith (genuine question)?
+As Rai The Fall are a love/hate band. you either 'get them' or you dont. Personally l love them but dont care for recent recorded output but seeing them live is always at least interesting.
+As Rai Mouthy northern gits were all the rage once!
My favorite Bowie interview!!!
Friendly interview - great.
"I'd never met such proud and,... tall people"
Would love to see more CBC interviewers like these guys nowadays.
david bowie is so lovely.
He is so beatiful..........
You're the man! Where are you David?
Hearing him talk about the themes & ideas to do with ziggy is pretty awesome. Sounds like he's got a pretty deep understanding of not just music but literature as well and alot of scope to his vision.
I swear every David Bowie interview I've seen, the interviewers are complete shit. Always cutting David off, asking stupid questions, being rude. Ugh! It's such a shame. Such an interesting and influential man really should have been given the time to be heard and asked worth while questions!
I wish they wouldn't start speaking all over his replies, they are far less interesting
Three legends of R'n'R
nobody was doing that! you got that right, and no will....miss you always David
nixter417 That is the first thing I thought too (he looks a bit like Clint Eastwood in this phase).. Exactly the first thing that came into my mind!!!!
He is so sexy. So cool and confident and original. All of you huge gaga fans out there need to thank Bowie he is what she wants to be.
"people called tribes"...nice one David!
GEEZ... let Bowie TALK! He Is The STAR!
How annoying they kept interrupting him ugh
You're a rock and roller David. Nothing more, nothing less. :-) Silly boy.
Bowie is a genius.
No wonder Bowie hated giving interviews. God forbid these two would actually let the poor guy get a word in edgewise. You could see that he was going to get into some really interesting ideas but they'd talk over him. Why did they even interview Bowie if they just wanted to hear themselves talk?
DogMom Those guys played with Zappa. I don't think they thought of themselves just as lowly TV journalists there to ask questions...
The interviewers are Flo and Eddie. If you like glam, you might know them as the back-up vocalists on T. Rex's Electric Warrior.
This is a fantastic interview from Bowie's most fertile musical period - at least from Bowie's perspective. It's a shame that the Turtles kept stepping on his words, because what we're getting from Bowie here is quite special.
It's only after watching this that I realised Jemaine Clement did a really good job playing Bowie!
Thats Right...I don't even know whick band David Bowie was in, but I still want to hear him Speak.
wow CBC...
amazing how much healthier he looks and sounds in this video compared to the 1974 Dick Cavett interview
Yes, let the man speak!!
November 25. My Bday !!!
Cannot believe the difference in appearance from the '74 Dick Cavett Show to this '77 interview...really took control of his health I guess....
good to know Hurley is no longer lost.
it's like J Mascis went back in time to interview Bowie, whoooah dude
Always cool and smoothe...............using proper English oh yes .
Who are these charming, brilliant chaps interviewing him?
This was Bowie's brief but critical Clint Eastwood phase with his hair.
😭👏👏👏😭
these interviewers seem more eager to talk than to listen
+Douglas Frazier They were most likely on amphetamines ;)
aside from jim morrison I dont think there's ever been a rock star w/ such a grasp of character, crowd psychology & societal culture. very bright & perceptive artist.
Personally, I think the interuptions are awkward but it's an interesting interview that covers a lot of ground-- they seem to really understand each other. It's a good interview.
The interviewers are Mark Volmann & What's His Name . Flo & Eddie from the Turtles
Who had a big hit in the 60's with Happy Together . The also toured & recorded a few times with Frank Zappa . Sounds like I made it all up right ?
Fucking legend. You wouldn't get Noel Gallagher talking about Kabuki theatre.
It's pretty mind-blowing to think Low, Heroes, The Idiot and Lust for Life were ALL released this year. This period was his high-point for me - still youngish and full of fascination with things but no longer talking complete s**t in interviews. Nice hair too.
He looks a bit like a younger Clint Eastwood here especially with the hair.
The interviewers are David`s friends Flo & Eddie, formerly of The Turtles and later with Frank Zappa`s Mothers as Floresent Leach And Eddie, great song writers and performers, "So Happy Together"........
I can't stand the way these interviewers keep interrupting David while he's speaking. Gawd! Let the man complete his thoughts!!
they are peers. this is excellant discourse, jones likes them, he had turtles records...
Hahaha, when Flo and Eddie aren't interupting Bowie, they're asking him two questions at once.
OMG he's completely attractive!
Love this cos it sums up the difference between us and them lovely Yanks. Think the interviewers are pissed off because 7.25 is a long time to go without a doughnut. (that's a donut)
Haha, for sure.. I wouldnt worry, Bowie has probably long forgotten this interview, lol.
Nice interview.
Do you know if Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull was ever interviewed by the CBC?
he was amongst peers... those guys are Flo n Eddie (Zappa), aka the Turtles!
He was terrific at giving interviews. You can see that the interviewers didn't need to do much to get loads from him - except they fucked it up with so many stupid interruptions! Gah!
i know. i was just sitting here, valuing his apparent mindset/knowledge.
david bowie has the sexiest accent ever
Oh god his laught 5:51 ASJDKLASDJSAKLDJSALKDJASLKD LOVE YOU BOWIE.
Wow he looks and sounds 100 times better than the 74 Dick Cavett interview.
Buzz off, that's English, how dare you!
haha, just the way he said it was so cute and cracked me up for some reason.
Flo and Eddie are apparently pretty stoned. They certainly would not be allowed on stage with Frank Zappa in the condition that they are in on this interview. i have seen: the who, the viollent femmes, good charlotte(i was right in front in that one and i could have like touched there shoes if i wanted too lol), the counting crows, R.E.M, modest mouse, and they might be giants.
i really want to see neil young, paul mccartney, and david bowie!!!
Hmm, he has quite a Gerard Philipe look here. My favourite actor from the 50's.
im only 13!! (= he is so lovely.
@imgoing2hellcom The interviewers are Flo & Eddie friends of David`s from The Turtles and later with Frank Zappa and The Mothers, it`s not like a "real" interview, the one who posted this shopuld have made a note about it.
