    Whitney was, is and will always be the greatest vocalist of all time. These people lost their mind standing, clapping, screaming, stomping--she ALWAYS delivered live vocals. She always had that impeccable stage presence. She controlled every inch of that stage. I believe she had a piece of hair in her mouth not gum lol. You should react to her singing Why Does It Hurt So Bad MTV Music Awards in 1996…this was when she was out of her vocal prime but she poured her heart out that night. The song was from Waiting To Exhale and was written years earlier but during the time of her performance Whitney was going through marital issues with Bobby and you could just feel the pain in her voice. Also you should react to the audio of He, I Believe (Japan 1990)-it’s a gospel song her mother Cissy sang but one thing about Whitney is that she went into another gear while singing gospel. There’s so many other performances of hers that are absolutely amazing.

      I've done Why Does It Hurt So Bad on Patreon, incredible vocal, so full of hurt and soul. I'll definitely do the He, I Believe that you suggested, thanks!

    Whitney live was something special. She could sing that song again right after and it wouldn't be the same. She always wanted her audience to be moved always. You'll notice with all the tv footage she considerates on the people in the room, stadium wherever. She knew when to turn up the heat when needed and in a room of your peers and record execs sang Whitney. Special lady.

    The sound goes a bit at 02:55 and I think she's indicating to someone off stage at 3:25 by putting her index finger up to her ear something went amiss with the ear piece. You can see it with the look on her face . Very subtly done and graceful. The greatest singing musical genius there ever was.

    I remember that performance like yesterday.. just some info, Whitney was sick that nite. She tossed out a lozenge before the held notes. Also, her ear piece was off at the beginning, you can see her tap it and look to the side. After audio corrections, she was able to get into it more

    You should definitely react to her performance of “ I Have Nothing” in the South African concert!! That’s probably my absolute favorite with so much showmanship and drama built into it. As well as her Love Medley from that concert it’s to die for!!!

    Bridge the gap thanks once again for your great insights. I love when a singer can embellish, change things up a bit, give the song a different vibe or feel, the great ones know how to do that. Especially for an award show. I never want to hear the song exactly as the recording all the way through.....it's boring.....this is what makes her the greatest!

    Yessss! I was so happy to see this one pop up today! I'm not even sure if I can articulate why, but this is one of my favorite performances of hers. I've watched it so many times! I love her delivery of the verses here with all the back-phrasing and "looseness", cause she's telling a story and it's conversational. It's also a really cool strategy for engaging the audience, because when you're not delivering on the timing and specific notes they're expecting from the studio recording, it's a way to grab their attention and pull them in. Then during that key change she's in full control of the timing and makes them wait a bit, which just makes the anticipation skyrocket, and man it pays off! I really love her commanding stage presence here... she was in full control of this entire performance and the band was so tight and followed along perfectly. It seems like she had some audio issues with her in-ear or something, cause she looked back and tapped her ear during the second verse, and there was that moment that she overextended a bit on a note and cracked, which would stress a lot of singers, but she just moved right along like a pro. Anyway, great reaction and thanks for picking this one! I'd love to see a reaction to the "I'm Every Woman" video sometime soon, it's a fun one with a lot of cameos!

    The BEST live version of IHN is "1994 South Africa" concert...her nuances and comfort- it's a BIG song, and she toys with it likes it's nothing, effortless. I rate IHN 1994 South Africa as her greatest performance ever, of any song of hers. She's backed by a full orchestra. She was the first major entertainer to visit the newly unified, post-apartheid nation of South Africa following Nelson Mandela winning election. The concert from Johannesburg was released on VHS in December, 1994....she did three, but the 12-11-94 Johannesburg was the last, and it was a HUGE event, and the finale...she left it all on the stage...high drama, her diva pauses walking away from the mic at the break in the song (this song has the pause, but much less dramatic), and she commanded the orchestra w/precision w/her arm gestures. It was Nippy top of her game, and she went big, knowing it was a significant event in history, w/the change in S Africa w/Mandela's election. "Nippy" being her nickname given by her mom..."Nippy" is on the license plate of the motorcycle she's sitting on the cover of her 2nd album. Yes, I'm a Nippy fan from day one, my early club days when her songs were turned into club tracks in the bars. The Feb. she passed, and mine and her b-days not far apart in Feb., I was going to buy a certified dress of hers for a shadow box display to hang in the hallway of my home w/other artwork, it's was only like $350...me a b-day gift to me, lol...I was like ok, I'm going to buy it, I screwed around a few days before going back on ebay to buy it, and she passed away!!! I went back to ebay, sure it would have went up, and it was $5,000...needless to say, I didn't get it. Her things spiked, but now that it's been some time, I may look around again. Anyway, check out IHN 1994 South Africa 12-11-94, it's 7min 30 sec long, and she wearing a gold gown w/a gold headdress. I think you'll be happy you did, and by all means, form your own opinion, but of the 2 you've watched, the one I referenced would be a year after this one, and perfection....high drama.

      Dancin’ On the Smooth Edge was the b-side of ATMTIN, but wasn’t included on the IYBT album. Same with Exhale (Shoop Shoop). It was the b-side on the single but it’s never been on an album.

    My biggest problem with so many of her live performances is her tendency to stray soooo far from the recordings. This one isn’t as extreme as many. One of her best songs, for sure.

    • @dm3889
      @dm3889 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I think because a lot of her major hits are pop songs and her vocal takes are strongly rooted in gospel. Which timing on a pop record can be uneven. This isn’t my favorite live performance of this one, but of course talented vocalist nonetheless.

    • @nichollojay6312
      @nichollojay6312 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I dont think its a problem. You should give diffrent flavors and take on every live performances of the same songs so that its not boring in my opinion.❤

      @@TheSensationalOne I’m entitled to my own opinion. I am a Whitney fan so I don’t necessarily need a history lesson on her rehearsals because I am well aware of them. She is one of the greatest vocalist of our time, but this just wasn’t my favorite live performance of this song. The timing in my opinion of her moments of interpretation didn’t always blend on this and that is fine. Something just feels off about it, but once again it’s my opinion and I’m not changing it.

    • @dm3889
      @dm3889 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheSensationalOne I’m sorry that your feelings are so fragile…Nothing about what I said was tearing her down lol. I said this singular performance didn’t work for “Me.” I stated in my original statement about timing I didn’t know that I had to provide you with a musical thesis breakdown for you not to get emotional over it.
