30:55 I believe the significance of Gabriel’s instrument being played in the suicide level is because of how he has effectively committed suicide through killing the entirety of the council, this is of course referenced in the name of Act 3 GodFist Suicide, GodFist refers to Gabriel as he is the “Right Hand of the Father” and what do hands make? Fists, Act 3, along with the other acts’ names refers to Gabriel in some way, for example “Imperfect Hatred” parallels Gabriel’s speech in 6-2 where he says “All that’s left is PERFECT HATRED”. Act 3 is the end of Gabriel’s story as his iridescent and “immortal” ichor will become only sustenance for the ever-hungering trees of VIOLENCE.

Don't forget about "Death of God's Will"s' album cover:
      It depicts Gabriel killing himself
Because not only is he fully accepting death (and the responsibility that comes with deciding how his final moments will be)
He's also renouncing to the role of 'being a vessel to god's will'
By following his own wants and interested in his final hours, he's eradicated his past identity, his past self
By embracing his true self, and Death... he's killed "the will of god"

Gabriel, is tge main character of ultrakill, its a story of someone coming to terms with the sins of the life one was brought up in and escaping. Though Gabriel's escape should never be an option one is forced to make. I'm referring to Gabe turning off his one life support, not the killing of the council.

I always saw the blood-fuel as a failsafe for sentience. If machines become sentient and develop things like empathy or emotion, then they will oppose to the war without reason. This is because even if the machines realize that what they're doing is wrong, (and they don't enjoy it) then they will not be able to live anymore. That's why after the humans dissapeared they needed to stay alive somehow, and that's why they went into hell, to stay alive, and there's nothing more scary to a sentient being, than death.

Layer 7 is undoubtedly my favorite layer. When playing this game, its kind of always felt like (at least for me) "haha funny vampire go-pro go brrrr" but when I experienced the violence layer, it hit me like a fucking brick. This game is borderline depressing. Its an amazing and fun game at face value, but when you actually sit down and think about the game's story, its just beautifully sad. The whole idea that the whole world is in chaos because of me just hits different. Especially when you get to witness the consequences of your actions. This isn't a game about a bouncy robot with a gun. It's a story about tragedy, loss, and knowing that even if the real heroic characters in the game end your bloodlust and malice, you will always just respawn a-new, ready to cause more and more death and destruction.
(moving away from the depressing stuff) Danse Macabre is best definitely no bias at all. Great video!!! :D

Something I gathered from Do Robots Dream of Eternal Sleep was that it was a metaphor for human discovery.
The first section of the song sounds hopeful, exciting. It sounds like progress in science and technology is being made, and humans are discovering new things.
And then the accordion comes in, and the tone shifts to tragedy. This is the moment the Gutterman was built and war became what it was. Fittingly, this part of the song also plays the moment you first see the Gutterman.
The song is about discovery and technology leading too far into humanity’s doom, sealing their fate.
A second thing I noticed was in the name of Hear! The Siren Song Call of Death. I know that the obvious interpretation is that of an air raid/war siren, blaring out like an alarm to get away from danger. But I also think that it has a double meaning, in the “traditional” sense of a siren, lulling people to their death. The song name, much like DRDOES, is a metaphor about how humans drove themselves too far. Every time humans built a new machine to try and save themselves, they were dooming themselves further, coming closer to death.
So the Siren Song is a literal Call of Death, not just calling to warn you of death, but calling you INTO death.

  • @qwertyqeys
    @qwertyqeys 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +148

I think in terms of who the protagonist is, I think it's still V1, because while you've entered hell looking for blood, everyone you've fought has been either a victim of hell beyond any hope of salvation, a perpetrator of that torment, or just attacks you on sight regardless. The hopeful tone in War, I read as being from Sisyphus's perspective. Not hope that he can win, but hope that his struggle against futility has meaning to him. And in Altars of Apostasy that moment where the music starts to sound hopeful, it also sounds very mournful. It sounds hopeful for you, that you can succeed in your journey, but also mournful because once you make it to the end, once you've purged all life, that's it for you. But it could also be seen as from the enemies' perspectives. The majority of them are tormented by existence, even as they inflict pain on others, it's almost as if the music is framing V1 as an angel of death, granting all of hell the privilege of death that was once a rarity, while also mourning that this is their only hope at escape.

Layer 7 was an experience to put it simply. Specifically 7-3 and my personal experience with it.
Forgive me if I rant a little, but I feel as if this is necessary. It’s a small story in the moments leading up to the 7-3 teaser and then me playing 7-3 for the first time.
On August 26th, 2023 at 5:30pm central, me and my other two brothers (I’m an identical triplet) were about to get on for the first time in a few months since one of them had gotten done with BMT (Basic Military Training). The one who just got into Tech School had just got his PC hooked up and ready to go. We were in the middle of a Ghosts of the Deep Dungeon run at 6:08 pm when one of us started getting a call from our dad. It started with one, that being the recent BMT graduate, and we thought it was just our dad making sure that his PC was working. Then it got to the other that was in Germany (he had been in the military for a while), then to me. We were in a Discord call when all of this was going on and we all said something like, “What’s going on? Dad can just text us what he needs to tell us”.
Eventually, our dad got us all three into a phone call and asked if all three of us could hear him clearly. We responded with, “Yes sir”. The next words that came through the phone would be the words that none of us would never forget: “I just got an update on JP…” (JP was our adopted brother). “I’m sorry to tell you all this after you all had just got together again, but JP committed suicide last night”. At that moment, the whole world just *stopped*.
JP had been suffering from some form of mental illness for some time, and it had gotten worse over the years. Combined with the fact that he was getting in trouble with the law, it most likely made his mental illness significantly worse.
When the call was done, one of our buddies joined the Discord call that we were in. He acknowledged his presence and all that one of us said was, “Can you give us a few moments?”. He said, “Do you want me to leave?”. One of us responded with, “No, it’s fine”. By this point, our buddy had noticed our tone had suddenly and violently changed from what it typically is.
After a few moments had passed, our buddy asked if everything was okay considering we haven’t said anything for a while. We told him no, and then he asked if it was safe to tell him. We said yes, and told him what had happened. All 3 of us almost made the decision to get off for the day.
Fast forward to October 26th, the day the we got the first teaser for 7-3. I had been looking into Dante’s Inferno a few weeks beforehand, as well as watch a summary of it courtesy of Wendigoon. I was on standby just before a small parade for my university. I checked Twitter given it was a Saturday and saw the 7-3 teaser. During the time that I was looking at the teaser I almost cried that day. I knew the context, and now had a personal attachment to the teaser. At that moment, I knew that Hakita and the other devs were going to pull the emotional strings once again.
Fast forward to the update’s release. I had just gotten done with 7-2. I saw the screen that shows you what level you are loading into. The moment I touched the ground in the elevator shaft, I audibly said, “Oh shit we’re entering *here* now”. Once I walked outside, pitch black was all I could see. Then but 2 seconds later the light turned on, and I saw the trees. I was in dread that Hakita was going to put a Jumpscare of some kind, and hoped that he wouldn’t pull that kind of a card for something as sensitive as this. Thankfully he didn’t.
After finding a feeding the first tree, I made the decision to toss a coin near the base of every last one of these trees. By the end of the level, I was a changed man.
7-3 is a sorrowful level. Not only because of the theme and setting, but also how real the theme can be. As Imp said on the dev stream, it hits a lot closer to home for most people.

Just wanted to add my own two cents onto the final guitar solo of War Without Reason: it sounds so much like a scream. A very, very powerful and lamenting scream that is basically a retelling of the entire Final War.
Knowing that the Final War was an alternate version of WW1 also makes this scream feel even more incredibly depressing than it already is. I can just imagine an almost epileptic film of a screeching, melting skull over grainy black and white footage of soldiers charging into death headlong with the guitar solo as the soundtrack.
War's not very personal for many of us. That's why 7-3 probably hit a lot harder for most people than 7-4 did, which applies to me as well. But I cannot imagine how a veteran would interpret such a track.

My absolute favorite detail about Suffering Leaves Suffering Leaves is that there is no combat version, even when fights begin. The song is stuck in its calm loop, much like how these people are now stuck as gnarled trees and CAN'T change or act. Hello, I'm Mexican and I just wanted to share some info about the death whistle:
It is, in fact, an war instrument that is designed to sound like a human scream
This was to intimidate enemies but fun fact, if you were to hear a bunch of people playing whistles together in unision, it would sound like howling wind
(Which could be tied to how Mino's layer, Lust, is one characteristic for its strong roaring winds)
And another note here: I had completely forgotten about how in Aztec culture, blood sacrifices were essential to keep many deities alive, it was their life's essence
Makes me wonder if Hakita drew inspiration from this for the trees (or maybe even the machines)
And speaking of trees, let's remember that in ULTRAKILL the cross doesn't not represent a crucifix, rather, it represents a tree, the tree of life
One filled with blood, blood responsible for the livelihood of all sentient beings
I wonder what the connections here may be

I just realized that when Hakita mentioned that the Story is of Gabriel but through the POV of V1, he could have meant that the music may be for how Gabriel feels while he watches V1 from a distance. Case? (OH) Do Robots Dream of Eternal Sleep, that could be Gabe asking himself and the music just reflecting on his thoughts. To be honest, as I think more of this, the more it makes sense! "Silence, Introspection", or the other one, feel appropriate for Gabriel's situation, but also for his POV of the situation, they tailor to his emotion! AS MARCO MEATBALL SAID "THE ENTIRE SOUNDTRACK OF THE VIOLENCE LAYER IS INTROSPECTIVE TO WHAT IS LIFE" and it's all after Gabe's second defeat, where he began doubting the order of things!

    while it isn't explicitly stated, it IS implied by the introduced lore ahout the machines that V1 is the earthmover counter;
    - The Earthmover you're fighting was in the midst of a duel with another; but both stop their fight and focus on V1; Something 30 times smaller than them, and yet becomes a major focus. V1 is a bigger threat to them than they are to themselves
    - The V line series never got deployed for war due to the New Peace, with V1 being merely a prototype. They had to find some way to keep the V series post-war (hence, V2)
    - The global damage caused by Earthmovers is what stopped the war, and united humanity anew to attempt to cleanse Earth, since it was incredibly polluted. (Streetcleaners were made for this!)
with all this combined, it all suggests that V1 was designed as the counter for Earthmovers

V1 is designed to be a one-machine army. They board the Earthmover, kill the smaller machines defending it, slaughter some humans for blood to heal and refuel, and then charge right into the brain as fast as possible and kill it.
All of their crazy movement, their ability to seemingly pick up and learn how to use any weapon instantly, the fact that they can parry the Corpse of King Minos' punches, all of it was to take down Earthmovers. They can move like crazy so they can get on board without any issues. They're able to master all sorts of weapons so they can be ready for any enemy that could be guarding the Earthmovers. The Feedbacker can let V1 parry even giant fists because it was probably meant to let V1 parry any attempted stomp attacks from the Earthmover.

Layer 7s music opened my eyes to a whole new level of storytelling that has such intense emotions intervoven into it. The composition, the instrumention feels like a direct translation of someone's feelings regarding the subject matter. It's as if the instruments themselves are talking to the listener. There is no good way to exactly describe it but it feels so real and genuine. It's a style of composition that I want to explore in my works as well. As for my favorite Do Robots Dream of Eternal Sleep? is an easy choice. The title poses such a terrifying existential question, and the music answers it in such a harrowing manner. It's so chilling when you think about it I love it.

Very amazing video man!! As an amateur in music producing, I'm very fascinated in watching analyzing video so I can learn to put them in my songs. This video right here really shows me the way to express emotion in music.
My favourite song is probably Danse Macabre. The sudden stop transits Suffering Leaves Suffering Leaves to Danse Macabre when V1 walks into the dark corridor, right after the door closes is adrenaline rush! The soundtrack represents the chaotic scenery that you are facing against and enemies killing each other really makes up the intensity of Layer 7 - Violence. The never ending war, the mourning of the human forest and the hunger of blood trees are truly what 7-3 is about.
Hope in the future, you will make some analyzing vid on CRYMACHINA or even CRYSTAR's OST. Those OSTs made by Sakuzyo are fantastic, but the game i think is a bit underated tho...

In my opinion of the earthmover, I feel like the entire stage itself is a boss fight in a way, the brain is just where the boss is the most direct about fighting you. It works really well as a spectacle fight, even better than the leviathan, and its theme is a whopping 10 segments. In other words, if phases are going by themes here (as per usual with some bosses, a theme change = a phase change) this boss has 10 phases, and it’s one of the best spectacle fights I’ve seen so far.

My personal favorite song is War Without Reason, especially the alarm sections, to me the whole song gives the feeling of being in a horrible manifestation of all violence on Earth, a fight for victory, and gaining said victory through any means possible.
The Earthmover has killed so many, but it will never stop, because that's all it's designed to do

in regards to the most personal layer of level of violence that needed a warning here is what I have to say.
I'm very close with knowing and thinking about death by one's own hand and have come to terms with not going through with that for the reason of not causing pain to people I care about but to see those those trees makes me feel almost scared to find out if that's what people who really went through with it actually ended up like or maybe something similar, I can't stress how much empathy I feel for people who really feel like that's the only way out of their pain especially since I understand that mindset but I cam only hope that the ones who unfortunately did leave us don't need to suffer anymore and just simply don't exist. I think non existence would be mercy there since being left alone with the thoughts of what did haunt you on earth and what you did to yourself and where you ended up sounds like almost too much of a price to pay especially for people of a younger age that had to suffer with massive losses in their life and or some form of mental illness making life that much more unbearable.
