This movie makes me proud to be a firefighter. An incredible example of working against impossible odds. And in the end, TEAMWORK and good command structure prevailed! This fire should be an example of how a fire scene should be run. God Bless the LAFD!
Love these old movies these made-for-tv movies they don't make things like this anymore wish they did. I grew up watching these things brings back memories!
Good, basic, entertainment, corny by today’s standards (hair, clothing,) but still very well put together. At least we had some damned dignity not so long ago.
Enjoyable movie. I live in Orange County and remember this fire happening in LA. I also got to meet Peter Scolari, his wife and mother at Disneyland about this time 1987-88. I am thinking he might have been in town filming movie. They, especially him, were the nicest, down to earth guests I have ever met. I think he might have been surprised I recognized him as he wasn't well known then.
Everytime i see movies like this, I always remember kevin Tigh and Randolph Mantooth, & Robert Fuller and the nurse Dixie from the 1970's show Emergency. Still love that show even today..
You can tell they are real FF's. No dramatics or daredevil stuff, just good solid firefighting tactics and safety first. The Red Devil has been put back in his box again. Hoooray for FF's, their bravery and their caring and may they all go home every night.
Anyone else notice that the movie crew kept reusing the same actor for different firefighters? The guy who makes the "we need pressure" call withdraws when his tank runs empty but is then with Powers on the 16th floor and then on the 17th smashing windows and now wearing a captain's hat.
The firefighters worked endlessly for the safety of others forgetting their own. It's so miraculous to see the effort they put together to bring those who needed help to safety.
thanks for downloading this! I have watched this movie hundreds of times (back when I was a kid and a fan of the fire department), I know every scene and every line. It's nice that the movie had the full cooperation of the LAFD.

This is the main reason I would never live or work in a tall building. You never know what could happen. If a building has more than 2 stories, I want nothing to do with it. IF it has more than 2, I better be on the first floor.
Pretty good movie. Never even realized they made this movie. I do recall it happening and seeing it on the news. I was still in college and interviewing for a job and it brought me to Downtown LA maybe a week or two later and I had kind of forgot about it but actually got a chance to see the damage of the building. Shortly after I was working in several different high rise buildings in LA. The highest I recall was the 27th FL in around a 50 FL building. We did have fire drills but not often. All the buildings I worked in had a sprinkler system.
I was there that night in May of 1988. Not in the building but down on the street. It was pretty crazy. So sad that one man died. Maintenance Engineer Alexander Handy. I'll never forget his name.

Wow Man...Thanks for uploading this! Saw this film when I was small on TV back in 1991. It was frightening and I was afraid of going up high rise buildings for a while but I always admired how the two main people, Paul and Susan trapped inside the office waited it out and developed a friendship and the moment where they rescue the Spanish-speaking cleaner and him showing his gratitude to the firefighters was a touching moment. I'm glad this ultimately led to a revision of building codes and the installation of sprinkler systems.
Are you kidding? I've watched disaster movies since I was a kid (I'm 43 now)... now I work in commercial buildings and still hate going into them because of Towering Inferno and now this movie!
@@neonhomer You are much stronger than you can imagine given that you still go and do your work in those despite your dislike of them. But I've been up some of the world's tallest skysrapers including a few supertall ones (>300m) such as the Willis Tower (USA), World Trade Center (USA pre 9/11) and The Petronas Towers (MY), all of which are or were over 400m tall. The views were breathtaking but I had to do my best not to think about those movies when I was in there.
The best part is 1:34 when the dog is about to cross the road and the fire engine honks his horn. I don't think was set up for the film. just a random dog wanting to get home!!

It's interesting to note that a fire on the 12th to 15th floors caused severe smoke inhalation for 2 people on the 37th floor. ( Office, highrise, or building managers out there, please make and PRACTICE a fire evacuation plan MUCH better than I experienced. Thanks. It will save lives. ) Years ago, I was appointed " fire evacuation director " on the 27th floor of a certain 34 floor office building in Montreal. A daunting responsibility for a 20 year old. I think the boss appointed me because nobody else, including himself, wanted to do it. But if I wasn't in the office when a fire started, nobody was appointed second in command. Fabulous planning ! We had 70 to 80 people in one company, spread out all around the floor. We had only one short meeting, ever, of all such building floor fire directors. I was directed to ( somehow ) walk around the entire floor, search every room, office, cubicle, and washroom, and find, alert, and account for everybody. At the same time, I was to direct everybody, using the enclosed concrete stairwells, to trek up onto the roof, not down to ground level, in case of fire below us. And the chances were large that any building fire WOULD probably be below us. All of that appeared to me to be rather a lot of work to expect just one person to do quickly. I was told that no helicopter could possibly land on the roof to rescue us. There were way too many cables, wires, antennas, and air conditioners, etc., on the roof to permit that. Added to which, the roof had never been designed and reinforced for the additional helicopter weight, as they are at major hospitals. We were simply supposed to stay up there, in the choking smoke, and heat, until the fire was hopefully put out below us before it broke through to the roof, or we all suffocated from smoke inhalation, anyway. We were never given floor plans, a tour showing where all stairwells were, or a trek up to the roof. _Nor was there ever, over many years, any whole building practice fire or evacuation drill._ Nobody even knew if there was enough room on the roof in the first place to accommodate possibly many hundreds of people at once. They had never been up there. At nighttime, I used to dream, hope, and pray, that if we ever found our way up to the roof, that the rooftop door would always be unlocked. Didn't sound like a great, well thought out plan to me. In fact, I thought it was a potential disaster in the making. We were totally unprepared for a major fire. Fire and smoke always tend to spread upwards. There were at least two to four fully enclosed concrete stairwells, on opposite sides, or each corner, of the building. I was perhaps willing to at least try to walk everybody down a stairwell to the street. But I was never told or shown exactly where all of them were. The only stairwell I knew of at all was the one nearest where I worked. Nor was I allowed any time off from work to go around exploring everywhere by myself. I was told that I was not allowed to go up to the roof, unless there was a fire. The boss said that it could be very windy and dangerous up there for me ! Fortunately, to this day, there's never been a large fire in that building.
They appointed you the position and failed to properly train you to be a scapegoat in case anything happened. That, and they wouldn't expect a 20 year old to stay for long. Insurance companies do feasibility studies and can make requirements of companies / buildings as a precaution for contingencies to contain the damage as it were and limit liability of the insurance company. I.e. if there was a good possibility of workplace shooting, they may require employees be issued or allowed to carry bullet-resistant vests. (You can make your own plates for $40; they can stop pistol and shotgun rounds but not rifle rounds.) You can be in charge of floor evacuation, but it only works if they follow your direction.
Saw this multiple times on TV growing up but hadn't found it until now, thanks for uploading. A very different and dramatic experience compared to say, Towering Inferno, but none the less touching and down to business. Also again, not just made for Hollywood but happened.
The interesting thing about this movie is that there were no villains. Everybody was portrayed as a decent person. That's a nice variation from the usual disaster movie.

As far as I could tell everything was accurate to the LAFD. Including operations, command structure, hell even the fact that the firefighters were not all white. Great movie based much more off realism than fiction. Similar to Emergency!.
Awesome movie. "Fire - Trapped On The 37th Floor" was the film that first inspired me as a 6 year old child in 1992 to start building Lego skyscrapers and playing with matchbox fire engines. :)
First time I read your comment, and admittedly I read it quickly, I thought you said you were inspired to build lego skyscrapers and then play with matches! How do some of us ever survive to adulthood ;-). I actually have a bunch of friends who became paramedics after watching Emergency! as kids....
watching one of the early scenes, it struck me that I doubt any viewers were inspired to become high rise janitors.....even though I know of few of those, too, one of whom being my sister, and them very happy with their lives, I might add....in some cases indisputably happier than those with inherited high falutin assumptions about what "Should".....
+rockweedgirl I suspect there are quite many jobs, that are more dangerous than being a skyscraper janitor. I mean, what are the risks really? Getting a paper cut while emptying half-empty trash cans? And if something does happen, it could happen on your day off, or you could simply heed the fire alarm and get out, before the stairwells fill with smoke. It could happen during some other time than your shift. Although perhaps a boring job, it probably pays okay, and is not too difficult. Hopefully your skyscraper has sprinkler systems that work? Actually, I like Lego skyscrapers, for it allows me to build an impressive structure with a small footprint.

Really good movie and it's a reminder of the amazing bravery of firefighters. What disgusts me though is what they earn, which on average is $55,0000 per year compared to the insane amount earned by profession sports people, like a basketball player with one year's experience is $1,445,697. Risking your life to save others vs putting a ball in a net? Surely these salaries are the wrong way around.

Supply and Demand. I could have been an okay firefighter, because in my youth I could climb anything, or fit through anything, and was fearless. But I wasn’t that strong (to adequately help a colleague), so only maybe….. But as a 5’3” 100lb woman, I couldn’t even dream of competing in the NBA. Pretty much the same comparison for every other human on the earth. So… thus, supply and demand…..
The building had smoke sensors, but what about a fire alarm system? If an audible fire alarm was activated, a lot more people would have had more time to get out sooner.
At the time, most LA skyscrapers had neither alarm systems nor sprinklers, as they were more concerned with seismic issues for obvious reasons. Lessons were definitely learned after this. All tall buildings in Greater LA were refitted with alarm and sprinkler systems, and all new structures are required to have them.
Have you seen "Backdraft"? One of the best fire movies ever made and it shows the other side of these firefighters and how they are regular people who chose this profession to help people. They are extremely courageous and never give a second thought as to whether they will come out alive or not. My hat is off to all firefighters.
I remembering this airing as an ABC MONDAY NIGHT MOVIE back on February 18, 1991. It just so happened that 5 days after this aired, ONE MERIDAN PLAZA in Center City Philadelphia where I'm from caught fire burning out of control for almost 24 hours.
I lived in New Orleans at that time. Heartbreaking. The woman who survived was an experienced sky diver. I cannot remember her name. She broke so many bones but with surgery and rehabilitation she was able to walk again.
I’m writing a book called “Highrise Inferno” this movie along with “The Towering Inferno” gave half of my inspiration it’s gonna be about the Heroism of firefighters and people who will work together.
I taped this movie off network TV onto VHS in 1991, when I was ten years old. I remembered it now because I came across some articles on this fire in the archives of my current employer, Wells Fargo Bank, which absorbed First Interstate about five years after the movie came out. Very good, for a TV movie, I must say, and the office decor looks a lot like my Wells Fargo office in a high-rise in Boston, which was renovated in the late 1980s when it was also part of another bank. I just hope it's more fire resistant than this building in L.A. was!

Then maybe you should practice taking the stairs, even before there is some major event. You might want to know that you are actually capable of going down 30+ flights of stairs, even before there is a fire. Also good to help from getting lost in a confusing building.
Yeah, the old movie Towering Inferno and the newer Korean movie The Tower had extremely vivid illustrations of that. In the former, a packed elevator opened right into the fire and everybody inside it burned. The Tower was even worse - the elevator *jammed* on the fire floor, and everybody inside it *cooked alive*. There's also the fact that the firemen themselves, far better protected, often commandeer any "safe" elevator to help bring up equipment and leave themselves more stamina for fighting the fire, and you using them prevents THEM from using them - and they have the knowledge and training (and often special elevator controls) to judge whether an elevator is safe to use or not. Don't ever take an elevator in a fire. Period. Know where ALL the staircases down are and use 'em!
Extremely important for women!! Since we tend to wear heels at work!!!. Always keep repeat keep a pair of comfortable shoes sneakers at your desk. If you can't lock a drawer, keep them in your car and take them to your desk every day!!! Chances are you'll never need them but trying to run, walk fast, walk downstairs will be easier with sneakers. The last thing you want to do is sprain or break an ankle!!! And be left behind!!

+emt5330 This bldg. is now known as the Aon Center and is signed on top and at the bottom as such... but also has a large Wells Fargo Bank in the lobby and has Wells Fargo sinage along its lower floors along Wilshire Blvd., Hope St., and 6th St. The "Wells Fargo Bldg." is actually a half mile north on Grand Ave, not "right behind" this bldg. I'm not being critical... rather, I'm trying to help you understand. I'm not sure which particular scene you're thinking of but they're actually looking at this very building. It didn't have "Wells Fargo" sinage on it in 1988 but it does today. The movie did get it right. The only part I question is why the interior lobby shots were done at CityCorp. The only thing I can come up with is that this bldg. was still closed for repairs when the movie was filmed. (The interior office shots would've been done in a movie studio where they can control special effects such as smoke and fire.)
As one who has had 3 fires, within a few minutes, the smoke is so bad you can’t see anything. I had to take a hose and play it on the door of the apartment next to ours that had been deliberately set. I couldn’t see the stairs, the lights, nothing. So I stood there until the SFFD arrived and they got the fire out. Around 1977, 775 Post Street.
Rick Riscola served with Hal Moore biggest VN battle ever 1st Air Cav Nov 1965. Idarang valley. Rick and his resue team saved 1000s of employees in WTC bldgs before both collapsed. Rick and his team were all killed. General Hal Moore was trying to have queen of England award postumely Victoria Cross to Rick family don't know if ever happened. VC equivalent to Medal of Honor

A fire is no laughing matter....I lived in a house with a couple roommates ....1976....my bedroom was upstairs next to the room on fire....we had got back from a night of partying.....I woke up to the sound of fire.....luckily a neighbor called the fire department and the house was saved.....first responders have a tough job and work miracles .... The stories I could tell......
At the very end, the announcer said that sprinkler systems had to be installed in 300+ high rise buildings, but residential high rises were not included. Why not? I know this was a long time ago, but I hope codes have changed since then for the safety of everybody. A very good film, so thank you for the upload.
I remember watching this movie as a kid, and the smoke alarm melting from the ceiling totally freaked me out... so funny to find this movie again here. The dutch subtitles are way off on many occasions, though... nothing to do with what is really said... LOL
Yea, a good one! I have seen fire, earthquake movies for years! To this day, I hate going up above the 5th floor as they say. I don't want to have to climb down 40 floors. I hate even going downtown Memphis on business being so high up! Memphis, TN is on the fault line for earthquakes as they have said for years. You can still tremors ever so often in MO, AR. One was just recently in the last few months! They say the new buildings are supposed to be in compliance now. That doesn't help with the older ones.
Fun fact about this movie is that the Station 3 in this movie isn't the actual Station 3. The station in this movie is the current Station 47 located in El Sereno.
I couldn't stop thinking about the Fire which it burned down my Nana's house during my first Christmas as a total Disaster but then later my Aunt took care of me at her house for my safety. I would thank the firefighters to come and get the people out of the building or house

Its pretty sad that people outside the building called the fire in before the security people knew there was one. I hope this catastrophie taught many people why they shouldnt ignore alarms even if theyre false alarms. Also who in their right mind would build sky scrapers without sprinklers?
I KNOW !!! I was wondering why nobody had even slight ideas of how to deal with the fire !!! They should crawl as the most fire victims die from smoke inhalation & the gas goes up ! So ,we need to lower ourselves & breath between the steps if we are going on the stairwell ! They were trapped inside ,but basically the same thing ! And wet a bath towels, or sheets anything & put 'em under the doors to shiel the air from smokes ,so that smoke & toxic gas will be absorbed in the damp towles ! In this movie ,they stopped water ...,but I am sure they have large water bottles for drinking ,as well as ice cubes to melt ! So that they can drink water & wet their hair & clothes !! Also ,less talking ,less wasting energy for them to keep lung's condition better ! Cracking windows ,not sure if it was a good idea as the more oxygen, the more fire ! The two workers ( main character plaid by Lisa Hartman & her co-worker ) tried breaking the windows by hitting the center & they were shatterproof, obviously for prevention of suicide & safety reasons ! They should had hit the corners instead !! 💜🥁🐉🎤💞

TV movies that were 'based on a true story' especially if it was a disaster movie subject of sorts, really are tending to be a more decent watch than flashy motion picture flicks. While Towering Inferno was evening gowns and tuxedos, this one has had a strong focus on cleaning help and two late-night workers, being based on a true story, that was obviously who was affected by this. Triangle Factory Fire (1979) made up characters, but still managed to deal with those hurt most, the young women. Flight 90: Disaster on the Potomac, well done in spite of controversy at the time over depicting a spontaneous rescue seen at the end of the movie. Crash (1978) about Flight 401 crashing in the Florida Everglades, I recorded once on VHS and removed all the William Shatner scenes (he was a character who wasn't on the plane). Total work of fiction in endless regards, but had some true stories. Miracle Landing (1990) about the Hawaiian airline that lost half the fuselage and still landed with only one fatality, haven't seen it in a while, but it seemed to be somewhat of a good visual of sorts, tho it did strain for a plot toward the end, AFTER it landed. I do have to admit, I'm not used to seeing Mr. Scolari in such a dramatic role. I'm sitting here coughing myself while he gasps for air.
If I was Working in a huge business building and there was a Fire in the Building i'd be in severe Panic mode because I'm extremely Afraid of Fires and I have a Phobia of Fires
The dramatic inclusion is not particularly interesting but far more believable than both The Towering Inferno and what reportedly happened to certain skyscrapers on 9/11/2001. A bit more explanation as to how the fire started would have helped, however.
Very well made, actually more realistic than The Towering Inferno, and shows some good tips too, like the woman plugging the air conditioning vent with whatever was to hand. The fire fighting too wasn't overdone with silly heroics. Much better than I expected.
Great film and like the fact it's based on an actual event. Also like the fire safety/ codes information provided. People don't realize how important fire sprinkler systems are! Also always know where the exits/ stairwells are when you enter a building. Fire/ shooter nowadays:)
I worked in two major hospitals during my 45 years in medical care, and whether it's true of all hospitals, I don't know, but those two had all the elevators programmed to go down to the ground floor immediately when the fire alarms sounded. No matter if they were headed up, they reversed and went to the ground floor, and anyone on them had to get off. Only the fire department had keys to operate them from that point on so they could make sure no one used them. That particular elevator safety feature was in place in the early 1970s, and I know the three tallest buildings in my city also had that same system in place, including the largest bank in the city. Now all of the multiple story buildings have them, the building and fire codes in my city being very strict in that regard (as well as having all the right firefighting features in them). We also had fire drills at least twice a year, usually three times a year, in each hospital. The one rule of evacuation is "Move laterally, then vertically." That is, get over to a safer part of the facility (obviously moving patients to that side first), closing all the fire doors behind us, and then, when Incident Command said to do so, move the patients downward in the safe elevators, always with two firefighters inside it, operating the lift, and making sure we got out of the building safely. Glad I no longer work (retired), but was also glad to practice all of that every year.

The stairways function like chimneys. Something that was learned from a 1981 Las Vegas Casino/Hotel fire. The fire started in the kitchen and spread to the gaming floor... which was exempt from sprinkler ordinances. The guests in the hotel that died... died nearest the stairs & elevators. [Like trying to breathe air in a chimney.] Bally's is built on that site. Fire doors, pressurized stairwells, increased sprinklers... That was detailed in a Modern Marvels "Engineering Disastes" segment.
From the era when TV shows were filmed but edited on tape as a cost-saving move. That’s why it doesn’t look nice and crisp like the shows actually edited on film.

This movie shows a very excellent example of the use of the Incident Command System.
Incident command works for big city departments. But the typical small municipal city with a shift staffing of 17, it’s actually useless.
thanks for downloading this! I have watched this movie hundreds of times (back when I was a kid and a fan of the fire department), I know every scene and every line. It's nice that the movie had the full cooperation of the LAFD.

This is the main reason I would never live or work in a tall building. You never know what could happen. If a building has more than 2 stories, I want nothing to do with it. IF it has more than 2, I better be on the first floor.
I liked this movie! Any movie based on a real story is usually good.
It's incredible that they were able to contain and extinguish a fire of that size and rescue all trapped people. A modern day miracle.

Pretty good movie. Never even realized they made this movie. I do recall it happening and seeing it on the news. I was still in college and interviewing for a job and it brought me to Downtown LA maybe a week or two later and I had kind of forgot about it but actually got a chance to see the damage of the building.
Shortly after I was working in several different high rise buildings in LA. The highest I recall was the 27th FL in around a 50 FL building.
We did have fire drills but not often. All the buildings I worked in had a sprinkler system.
I was there that night in May of 1988. Not in the building but down on the street. It was pretty crazy. So sad that one man died. Maintenance Engineer Alexander Handy. I'll never forget his name.
I loved watching disaster movies as a kid; this one, Poseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno, Earthquake, etc....craved the excitement...haha...
I remember I taped this. I miss Made-for-TV movies!

Wow Man...Thanks for uploading this! Saw this film when I was small on TV back in 1991. It was frightening and I was afraid of going up high rise buildings for a while but I always admired how the two main people, Paul and Susan trapped inside the office waited it out and developed a friendship and the moment where they rescue the Spanish-speaking cleaner and him showing his gratitude to the firefighters was a touching moment. I'm glad this ultimately led to a revision of building codes and the installation of sprinkler systems.
The movie " The Towering Inferno" also resulted n changes to fire codes and how high rise building fires were fought. Very good movie!
Are you kidding? I've watched disaster movies since I was a kid (I'm 43 now)... now I work in commercial buildings and still hate going into them because of Towering Inferno and now this movie!

But I've been up some of the world's tallest skysrapers including a few supertall ones (>300m) such as the Willis Tower (USA), World Trade Center (USA pre 9/11) and The Petronas Towers (MY), all of which are or were over 400m tall. The views were breathtaking but I had to do my best not to think about those movies when I was in there.
I will NOT enter a Sky Scraper because of earthquakes, fires, and elevators! I dont like elevators!

It's interesting to note that a fire on the 12th to 15th floors caused severe smoke inhalation for 2 people on the 37th floor.
( Office, highrise, or building managers out there, please make and PRACTICE a fire evacuation plan MUCH better than I experienced. Thanks. It will save lives. )
Years ago, I was appointed " fire evacuation director " on the 27th floor of a certain 34 floor office building in Montreal. A daunting responsibility for a 20 year old.
I think the boss appointed me because nobody else, including himself, wanted to do it.
But if I wasn't in the office when a fire started, nobody was appointed second in command. Fabulous planning !
We had 70 to 80 people in one company, spread out all around the floor.
We had only one short meeting, ever, of all such building floor fire directors.
I was directed to ( somehow ) walk around the entire floor, search every room, office, cubicle, and washroom, and find, alert, and account for everybody.
At the same time, I was to direct everybody, using the enclosed concrete stairwells, to trek up onto the roof, not down to ground level, in case of fire below us.
And the chances were large that any building fire WOULD probably be below us.
All of that appeared to me to be rather a lot of work to expect just one person to do quickly.
I was told that no helicopter could possibly land on the roof to rescue us.
There were way too many cables, wires, antennas, and air conditioners, etc., on the roof to permit that.
Added to which, the roof had never been designed and reinforced for the additional helicopter weight, as they are at major hospitals.
We were simply supposed to stay up there, in the choking smoke, and heat, until the fire was hopefully put out below us before it broke through to the roof, or we all suffocated from smoke inhalation, anyway.
We were never given floor plans, a tour showing where all stairwells were, or a trek up to the roof. _Nor was there ever, over many years, any whole building practice fire or evacuation drill._
Nobody even knew if there was enough room on the roof in the first place to accommodate possibly many hundreds of people at once. They had never been up there.
At nighttime, I used to dream, hope, and pray, that if we ever found our way up to the roof, that the rooftop door would always be unlocked.
Didn't sound like a great, well thought out plan to me. In fact, I thought it was a potential disaster in the making. We were totally unprepared for a major fire. Fire and smoke always tend to spread upwards.
There were at least two to four fully enclosed concrete stairwells, on opposite sides, or each corner, of the building. I was perhaps willing to at least try to walk everybody down a stairwell to the street.
But I was never told or shown exactly where all of them were.
The only stairwell I knew of at all was the one nearest where I worked.
Nor was I allowed any time off from work to go around exploring everywhere by myself. I was told that I was not allowed to go up to the roof, unless there was a fire. The boss said that it could be very windy and dangerous up there for me !
Fortunately, to this day, there's never been a large fire in that building.
A fire in a high rise today is extremely rare. One has a better chance of being struck by lightning than being in a high rise fire.
They appointed you the position and failed to properly train you to be a scapegoat in case anything happened. That, and they wouldn't expect a 20 year old to stay for long.
Insurance companies do feasibility studies and can make requirements of companies / buildings as a precaution for contingencies to contain the damage as it were and limit liability of the insurance company. I.e. if there was a good possibility of workplace shooting, they may require employees be issued or allowed to carry bullet-resistant vests. (You can make your own plates for $40; they can stop pistol and shotgun rounds but not rifle rounds.)
You can be in charge of floor evacuation, but it only works if they follow your direction.

Saw this multiple times on TV growing up but hadn't found it until now, thanks for uploading. A very different and dramatic experience compared to say, Towering Inferno, but none the less touching and down to business. Also again, not just made for Hollywood but happened.

The interesting thing about this movie is that there were no villains. Everybody was portrayed as a decent person. That's a nice variation from the usual disaster movie.

As far as I could tell everything was accurate to the LAFD. Including operations, command structure, hell even the fact that the firefighters were not all white. Great movie based much more off realism than fiction. Similar to Emergency!.

Awesome movie. "Fire - Trapped On The 37th Floor" was the film that first inspired me as a 6 year old child in 1992 to start building Lego skyscrapers and playing with matchbox fire engines. :)
First time I read your comment, and admittedly I read it quickly, I thought you said you were inspired to build lego skyscrapers and then play with matches! How do some of us ever survive to adulthood ;-). I actually have a bunch of friends who became paramedics after watching Emergency! as kids....
watching one of the early scenes, it struck me that I doubt any viewers were inspired to become high rise janitors.....even though I know of few of those, too, one of whom being my sister, and them very happy with their lives, I might add....in some cases indisputably happier than those with inherited high falutin assumptions about what "Should".....

I suspect there are quite many jobs, that are more dangerous than being a skyscraper janitor. I mean, what are the risks really? Getting a paper cut while emptying half-empty trash cans? And if something does happen, it could happen on your day off, or you could simply heed the fire alarm and get out, before the stairwells fill with smoke. It could happen during some other time than your shift. Although perhaps a boring job, it probably pays okay, and is not too difficult.
Hopefully your skyscraper has sprinkler systems that work?
Actually, I like Lego skyscrapers, for it allows me to build an impressive structure with a small footprint.

Really good movie and it's a reminder of the amazing bravery of firefighters. What disgusts me though is what they earn, which on average is $55,0000 per year compared to the insane amount earned by profession sports people, like a basketball player with one year's experience is $1,445,697. Risking your life to save others vs putting a ball in a net? Surely these salaries are the wrong way around.

I could have been an okay firefighter, because in my youth I could climb anything, or fit through anything, and was fearless. But I wasn’t that strong (to adequately help a colleague), so only maybe….. But as a 5’3” 100lb woman, I couldn’t even dream of competing in the NBA.

The building had smoke sensors, but what about a fire alarm system? If an audible fire alarm was activated, a lot more people would have had more time to get out sooner.
At the time, most LA skyscrapers had neither alarm systems nor sprinklers, as they were more concerned with seismic issues for obvious reasons. Lessons were definitely learned after this. All tall buildings in Greater LA were refitted with alarm and sprinkler systems, and all new structures are required to have them.
The fire alarm went off repeatedly, but the security guards at the front desk would reset it.

Have you seen "Backdraft"? One of the best fire movies ever made and it shows the other side of these firefighters and how they are regular people who chose this profession to help people. They are extremely courageous and never give a second thought as to whether they will come out alive or not. My hat is off to all firefighters.
I remembering this airing as an ABC MONDAY NIGHT MOVIE back on February 18, 1991. It just so happened that 5 days after this aired, ONE MERIDAN PLAZA in Center City Philadelphia where I'm from caught fire burning out of control for almost 24 hours.
Tragically, 3 Philadelphia firefighters died in that Meridian Plaza fire. I remember hearing about that one.

I lived in New Orleans at that time. Heartbreaking. The woman who survived was an experienced sky diver. I cannot remember her name. She broke so many bones but with surgery and rehabilitation she was able to walk again.
I’m writing a book called “Highrise Inferno” this movie along with “The Towering Inferno” gave half of my inspiration it’s gonna be about the Heroism of firefighters and people who will work together.

I taped this movie off network TV onto VHS in 1991, when I was ten years old. I remembered it now because I came across some articles on this fire in the archives of my current employer, Wells Fargo Bank, which absorbed First Interstate about five years after the movie came out. Very good, for a TV movie, I must say, and the office decor looks a lot like my Wells Fargo office in a high-rise in Boston, which was renovated in the late 1980s when it was also part of another bank. I just hope it's more fire resistant than this building in L.A. was!

Then maybe you should practice taking the stairs, even before there is some major event. You might want to know that you are actually capable of going down 30+ flights of stairs, even before there is a fire. Also good to help from getting lost in a confusing building.
Yeah, the old movie Towering Inferno and the newer Korean movie The Tower had extremely vivid illustrations of that. In the former, a packed elevator opened right into the fire and everybody inside it burned. The Tower was even worse - the elevator *jammed* on the fire floor, and everybody inside it *cooked alive*.
There's also the fact that the firemen themselves, far better protected, often commandeer any "safe" elevator to help bring up equipment and leave themselves more stamina for fighting the fire, and you using them prevents THEM from using them - and they have the knowledge and training (and often special elevator controls) to judge whether an elevator is safe to use or not.
Don't ever take an elevator in a fire. Period. Know where ALL the staircases down are and use 'em!

Extremely important for women!! Since we tend to wear heels at work!!!. Always keep repeat keep a pair of comfortable shoes sneakers at your desk. If you can't lock a drawer, keep them in your car and take them to your desk every day!!! Chances are you'll never need them but trying to run, walk fast, walk downstairs will be easier with sneakers. The last thing you want to do is sprain or break an ankle!!! And be left behind!!

When you see them looking up at the fire, they are looking at the Wells Fargo building. The actual site of the fire is directly behind them.
+emt5330 This bldg. is now known as the Aon Center and is signed on top and at the bottom as such... but also has a large Wells Fargo Bank in the lobby and has Wells Fargo sinage along its lower floors along Wilshire Blvd., Hope St., and 6th St. The "Wells Fargo Bldg." is actually a half mile north on Grand Ave, not "right behind" this bldg. I'm not being critical... rather, I'm trying to help you understand. I'm not sure which particular scene you're thinking of but they're actually looking at this very building. It didn't have "Wells Fargo" sinage on it in 1988 but it does today. The movie did get it right. The only part I question is why the interior lobby shots were done at CityCorp. The only thing I can come up with is that this bldg. was still closed for repairs when the movie was filmed. (The interior office shots would've been done in a movie studio where they can control special effects such as smoke and fire.)
As one who has had 3 fires, within a few minutes, the smoke is so bad you can’t see anything. I had to take a hose and play it on the door of the apartment next to ours that had been deliberately set. I couldn’t see the stairs, the lights, nothing. So I stood there until the SFFD arrived and they got the fire out.

Rick Riscola served with Hal Moore biggest VN battle ever 1st Air Cav Nov 1965. Idarang valley. Rick and his resue team saved 1000s of employees in WTC bldgs before both collapsed. Rick and his team were all killed. General Hal Moore was trying to have queen of England award postumely Victoria Cross to Rick family don't know if ever happened. VC equivalent to Medal of Honor

A fire is no laughing matter....I lived in a house with a couple roommates ....1976....my bedroom was upstairs next to the room on fire....we had got back from a night of partying.....I woke up to the sound of fire.....luckily a neighbor called the fire department and the house was saved.....first responders have a tough job and work miracles .... The stories I could tell......
At the very end, the announcer said that sprinkler systems had to be installed in 300+ high rise buildings, but residential high rises were not included. Why not? I know this was a long time ago, but I hope codes have changed since then for the safety of everybody. A very good film, so thank you for the upload.

Yea, a good one! I have seen fire, earthquake movies for years! To this day, I hate going up above the 5th floor as they say. I don't want to have to climb down 40 floors. I hate even going downtown Memphis on business being so high up! Memphis, TN is on the fault line for earthquakes as they have said for years. You can still tremors ever so often in MO, AR. One was just recently in the last few months! They say the new buildings are supposed to be in compliance now. That doesn't help with the older ones.

I couldn't stop thinking about the Fire which it burned down my Nana's house during my first Christmas as a total Disaster but then later my Aunt took care of me at her house for my safety. I would thank the firefighters to come and get the people out of the building or house

Its pretty sad that people outside the building called the fire in before the security people knew there was one. I hope this catastrophie taught many people why they shouldnt ignore alarms even if theyre false alarms. Also who in their right mind would build sky scrapers without sprinklers?

I KNOW !!! I was wondering why nobody had even slight ideas of how to deal with the fire !!! They should crawl as the most fire victims die from smoke inhalation & the gas goes up ! So ,we need to lower ourselves & breath between the steps if we are going on the stairwell ! They were trapped inside ,but basically the same thing ! And wet a bath towels, or sheets anything & put 'em under the doors to shiel the air from smokes ,so that smoke & toxic gas will be absorbed in the damp towles ! In this movie ,they stopped water ...,but I am sure they have large water bottles for drinking ,as well as ice cubes to melt ! So that they can drink water & wet their hair & clothes !! Also ,less talking ,less wasting energy for them to keep lung's condition better ! Cracking windows ,not sure if it was a good idea as the more oxygen, the more fire ! The two workers ( main character plaid by Lisa Hartman & her co-worker ) tried breaking the windows by hitting the center & they were shatterproof, obviously for prevention of suicide & safety reasons ! They should had hit the corners instead !! 💜🥁🐉🎤💞
@@spark_6710 I was thinking EVERYTHING that you were but also included why didn’t they make themselves masks (even out of coffee filters) and why they kept running instead of crawling. Same thing on the oxygen issue, plus plexiglass inner windows that will not shatter. NEVER get on an elevator!!! Things like that got the best of me...
TV movies that were 'based on a true story' especially if it was a disaster movie subject of sorts, really are tending to be a more decent watch than flashy motion picture flicks.
While Towering Inferno was evening gowns and tuxedos, this one has had a strong focus on cleaning help and two late-night workers, being based on a true story, that was obviously who was affected by this.
Triangle Factory Fire (1979) made up characters, but still managed to deal with those hurt most, the young women.
Flight 90: Disaster on the Potomac, well done in spite of controversy at the time over depicting a spontaneous rescue seen at the end of the movie.
Crash (1978) about Flight 401 crashing in the Florida Everglades, I recorded once on VHS and removed all the William Shatner scenes (he was a character who wasn't on the plane). Total work of fiction in endless regards, but had some true stories.
Miracle Landing (1990) about the Hawaiian airline that lost half the fuselage and still landed with only one fatality, haven't seen it in a while, but it seemed to be somewhat of a good visual of sorts, tho it did strain for a plot toward the end, AFTER it landed.
I do have to admit, I'm not used to seeing Mr. Scolari in such a dramatic role. I'm sitting here coughing myself while he gasps for air.
If I was Working in a huge business building and there was a Fire in the Building i'd be in severe Panic mode because I'm extremely Afraid of Fires and I have a Phobia of Fires

The dramatic inclusion is not particularly interesting but far more believable than both The Towering Inferno and what reportedly happened to certain skyscrapers on 9/11/2001. A bit more explanation as to how the fire started would have helped, however.

Very well made, actually more realistic than The Towering Inferno, and shows some good tips too, like the woman plugging the air conditioning vent with whatever was to hand. The fire fighting too wasn't overdone with silly heroics. Much better than I expected.

Great film and like the fact it's based on an actual event. Also like the fire safety/ codes information provided. People don't realize how important fire sprinkler systems are! Also always know where the exits/ stairwells are when you enter a building. Fire/ shooter nowadays:)

I worked in two major hospitals during my 45 years in medical care, and whether it's true of all hospitals, I don't know, but those two had all the elevators programmed to go down to the ground floor immediately when the fire alarms sounded. No matter if they were headed up, they reversed and went to the ground floor, and anyone on them had to get off. Only the fire department had keys to operate them from that point on so they could make sure no one used them. That particular elevator safety feature was in place in the early 1970s, and I know the three tallest buildings in my city also had that same system in place, including the largest bank in the city. Now all of the multiple story buildings have them, the building and fire codes in my city being very strict in that regard (as well as having all the right firefighting features in them).
We also had fire drills at least twice a year, usually three times a year, in each hospital. The one rule of evacuation is "Move laterally, then vertically." That is, get over to a safer part of the facility (obviously moving patients to that side first), closing all the fire doors behind us, and then, when Incident Command said to do so, move the patients downward in the safe elevators, always with two firefighters inside it, operating the lift, and making sure we got out of the building safely.
Glad I no longer work (retired), but was also glad to practice all of that every year.
911 comes to mind..why the 2 leads didn't wet a towel, put it around their face and go downstairs as soon as they saw smoke is a mystery.

The stairways function like chimneys.
Something that was learned from a 1981 Las Vegas Casino/Hotel fire.
The fire started in the kitchen and spread to the gaming floor... which was exempt from sprinkler ordinances.
The guests in the hotel that died... died nearest the stairs & elevators.

Bally's is built on that site. Fire doors, pressurized stairwells, increased sprinklers...
