  • I am so excited to talk to you about the tomato varieties I am planning on including in my homestead garden this year, as well as the tomatoes that didn't make the cut for this summer's growing season. I love variety, so we are going to talk about a lot of different varieties, as well as general info beginner's may want to learn about growing tomatoes!

    Love tomatoes! But I caught your remark about the hummus and would love to be able to master that also!

      I will have to make a video down the line about hummus… It is our go to lunch.

    Yay for TOMATOES!!!!! We share so many favorites! I found a new one to try this year from Redwood Seeds. It’s called California Sungold and it’s open-pollinated! Says it’s a little bigger than Sungold, so I’ll grow each of them side by side and see how they do. Let me know if you want to sample some. Love this video!

      Oh, yay! I was hoping that you would see this. I just posted it to Facebook and tagged you, because I thought of you and mentioned you all through the video. I would love to try the open pollinated version of Sungold and compare it to the hybrid version. I am so excited for fresh tomato season! ❤️🍅🍅❤️

    San Marzanno doesn't grow well in my garden either. I'll never have a gmo tomato in my garden either. Good list. Happy gardening

      @@scofieldfarm sun gold and dr wyche. I definitely need to try a new paste tomato this year though. San Marzano‘s just get way too much blossom end rot.

      Those are two amazing tomatoes! For a paste tomato, have you thought about getting the La Roma 3 seeds? I know they’re a hybrid, but that actually protects them more from blossom end rot and disease, and they were not intimidated by our heat.

    The best classic red that many don't know about that's very popular in Europe is exclusive to Franchi's. It's called Franchi's Red Pear. It's huge, amazing production and just a perfect tomato flavor, missing absolutely nothing.

      I will have to look that one up to try it! Thank you so much for telling me about it. I had never heard of it before.

      @@scofieldfarm I've grown in for the past 5-6 years and most tomatoes are always missing that "something" for me and this one hits all the right notes. It's classic but almost not so classic when there are so many flavors out there. It still stands out among all the "unusual" flavors. And from the varieties you've shown we have a similar taste profile

      Thanks for the comment. At the time of the making of this video I wasn’t able to type because of being in a shoulder immobilizer. It is a good suggestion, but not one I am able to do right now. I often have to take notes when I am watching you tube videos myself to remember information that is helpful or that I need to reference. I am glad the video was helpful to you and hope you found a new to you tomato variety to try! 😊

    Have you grown Honey Drop Cherry? I will be sowing it this week. It's a Sungold cross and open pollinated. Hudson Valley Seeds says they did a taste test and 60 percent of people preferred Honey Drop over Sungold

      @scofieldfarm  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually just recently heard of the Honey Drop, but I’ve never tasted it or tried growing it yet. You will have to let me know an update if you think it’s better than Sun Gold or not. When I tried Sun Sugar and Sun Gold in the garden at the same time, I thought they both tasted almost exactly the same. Would be very curious about that one.

    Hi Carisse! I do not have a green thumb but want to try to grow a few veggies this year. We definitely want to try a few tomato plants in grow bags, as we rent so cannot really plant in ground. For newbies that haven't had much luck in the past what kinds would you suggest for us that may be the easiest to grow, with satisfying results? We will probably be buying plants from a big box store or nursery, we live in your area (zip 96019) and we love the taste of heirlooms, though any homegrown tastes amazing compared to storebought. Thank you so much for any suggestions you have!!

    • @scofieldfarm
      @scofieldfarm  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am so glad you are going for it and going to start growing tomatoes! I listed my very favorites in this video, as well as so many I have enjoyed that would be great choices. I would probably grow at least 1 cherry tomato variety, 1 paste type, and 1 bigger slicer type. It may be a good idea to start with a hybrid type slicer and paste, since they are more reliable with production and disease resistance and will give you better success early on, and with cherry tomatoes I feel like the heirloom do just as good here and can pack on the flavor and are usually the first to ripen, giving sooner gratification. Maybe pick an heirloom larger tomato to try as well, just to start in some unusual flavor, but they do often take longer to produce and not always as many compared to a hybrid. I have heard people having great success with grow bags- just make sure to give enough frequent water when we get really hot and mulch them so they retain moisture well! Any of the tomatoes I mention are good choices, including the ones I didn’t have room for this year. I would avoid San Marzano, as it tends to have blossom end rot in our area, and that can be discouraging. Also, our area tends to have more production in fall than summer, so don’t give up if they produce slow … if you keep them alive, they should give a good final push of fruit in the fall! Happy gardening!!!

    Could you tell us about your gardening journal/record keeping through the years? I'm debating on purchasing a pre formatted hand written type, or developing something in a digital format. Our homestead garden will be done together with my uncle, so I'm thinking a shared Google sheet might be best for us.

      I mentioned in the video before this one that I have multiple places that I write notes and lists. I made a master seed inventory list, but I also have notes on my iPhone, and notes in the back of my hardcopy planner about things that worked, things I want to do differently next year, and the dates of when I fertilize trees or pruned them. I have a document on my laptop that I keep a garden journal and then separate documents of what seeds I start each season and which ones are available for sale locally. I also use my Instagram account as a visual journal. I can go through my old post, and also access the archive of my stories, which shows me often the date I planted things out or pictures, and videos of how my garden was doing at different times of the year different years. I am really visual so photos and videos on my Instagram or even just on my phone. help me a lot to remember things. After I plant out anything, for example, I will make a quick video just for myself to have on my phone that I say what every single thing is that I planted, and I’ll say out loud to myself which raised bed it is, that way if I forgot to put labels on it in the garden, I can at least look up the video and remind myself of what was planted there, and all videos on the phone are also time and date stamped. All that to say, I make these kind of notes and reminders in all different forms and places because I am not the most organized person and I’m very forgetful, so I’d like to have multiple ways to remind myself what I liked and didn’t like, and what I want to change in the future. It sounds like a great idea to have a document that can be edited by your uncle and by your family in your joint homestead garden… We had a document like that in 2020 when we were sharing grocery shopping with my sister and helping get things for my mom that either of us could edit what needed to be picked up or check it off, and that was a great collaboration that technology can do. I’m super excited for you and I think sharing the garden area with your uncle is an amazing idea.

      Also, often I will screenshot a picture of the weather and what temp it says it is on a morning we get frost for the first time, or if it’s an exceptionally low low I want to remember that temperature and what time of year it was, and I put it in my favorites on my photos app so I can see how low the temp got and what the date was it got that low. And then I also have a separate notes on my phone where I have a list of the first frost and last frost each year since we’ve lived on this property.
