MISTAKE to HARVEST During Golden Hour? | VLOG
It's a race against time! Golden hour is my favorite time in the garden, but as the days get shorter in the fall, my window of time to harvest while there is still light during my favorite time of day is quickly diminishing. I have so much harvesting to do in our little homestead garden in NorCal, as the fall is the time that our summer veggies are most productive since the heat pressure is finally relenting. We love growing out own food, and what a pay off it is to spend time in this beautiful garden gathering our own food as fresh as it can be! What is your favorite time to be out in your garden?

    @7:09 not sure what memes you are seeing, but I don't think it's a joke to collaborate with your community when it comes to protecting yourself in hard times. The meme has floated around for years about ranking friends based on what they do for me and it is meant to be funny. Thanks for your comment. I think you misunderstand what I am saying, but that is okay. I am all for trade and bartering and community sufficiency vs self sufficiency. I am talking about calamity like this recent hurricane, and loving my neighbor and not expecting anything in return. We had a massive wildfires come into the small city I live by and burn down over 1100 homes and kill 5 people. I am not asking my neighbor whose house and possessions all burned to the ground what they will trade me if I help them… my house didn’t burn down but so many friends’ homes did. I also have a beautiful hope that God takes care of those who are willing to care for those who cannot repay. He has been so kind to my family, I know He will take care of us when we aren’t just “me” focused - I have seem Him do it over and over again. Thanks again for your comment and you are always free to see things differently and disagree - I appreciate you being here and taking the time to offer your thoughts.

    Im all for citrus in containers. After all, I’m in Zone 5b, Canada. But in your case, I suggest you use open bottom raised beds, 1.4’ heigh. You can control the soil mix, pH, fertilizer, and watering. I did this for my blueberry plants since my native soil is not acidic enough. Hope this helps.

    • @scofieldfarm
      @scofieldfarm 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the tips! I actually want to specifically move my blueberries into these because they have struggled and been stunted in growing straight in the ground, no matter how much we have amended it and tried to feed them acid loving plant food. Great idea on the citrus as well for when I put that grapefruit into the ground… a smaller raised bed with hardware cloth underneath would help keep the great amended soil with the correct PH but give room for it to really thrive when I wants to get huge. Love your comments when you leave them!

    • @samMTL514
      @samMTL514 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@scofieldfarm blueberry thrive in pH 4.5 to 5.5. Acid loving plants fertilizer is not effective if your native soil pH around 7. You are fighting the mineral in your soil. It’s losing battle.

    • @samMTL514
      @samMTL514 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      For my blueberry raised bed, I used a potting soil (not garden soil) with pH 5 to 6. It’s mostly made with peat-moss. I amended it with sulphur and compost. There is another hack/ trick to lower pH significantly. Ammonium-based fertilizers have the greatest potential to acidify soil. Scott’s lawn fertilizer uses Ammonium based nitrogen.

      @@scofieldfarm I don't really know--I'm probably most excited about simply having a cool season garden! Usually the summer one wears me out, and I let it sit in shambles until early spring when I feel energized again. So now it feels good just to be ahead and have a tidy garden. (But what we have in the ground currently is a bunch of different peas/beans, kale, cauliflower, swiss chard, and several lettuces/spinach/arugula)

    I have a huge garden that I grow organically. Yesterday I was absolutely overwhelmed with the abundance of and trying to get it all harvested and preserved in a timely manner. I told my husband, “I have a problem, I think I need an intervention. Would it be ok if I give away a lot of this as I don’t want it to go to waste. I know it took so much time and water to grow this but I think I really am feeling this is a burden!” He agreed with me that we should give as much of it away as is needed. So yesterday we did give away boxes and boxes of produce. Some to a soup kitchen and the rest to our local Buy nothing group. We will continue to give away more abundance as the next week presents. Thank you for your affirmation of this action.

      I am so glad to be a confirmation for you! It can get to be a burden sometimes in its very blessing. So glad that others are able to enjoy some of your garden blessing and you have the burden off your shoulders.

    I am in Northern California too zone 9b and I succession my potatoes too and I harvest monthly till December really from grow bags. I have the same problems with tomatoes so I plant new ones in June for late harvest and final harvest until November at times. Sorry about the gophers, I grow everything in bags.

      Nice to meet another NorCal gardener- thanks for watching and commenting! Our potatoes in grow bags this year did great! First time we had grown them in grow bags. Most of our garden is raised beds with hardware cloth on bottom to prevent gopher issues, but I had made this one bed on the ground without protection that we had got away with for 4 summers… the gophers found us out, so it was a good run while it lasted. Grow bags are a great way to grow food! Good to know I am not alone in the tomato issues this year- I think it got too hot too fast. Hoping these plants that we have kept alive produce fruit when it finally cools down a bit. Great idea to succession sow tomatoes as well!

      I harvest during the winter and early spring. If you have some good sized sticks, you could harvest some now- they are sweeter once it gets cooler and they are tolerant of our winters.
