Hello Mr. Murphy. I’m a sixty year old classical pianist who just started to play violin. I started after my five month old granddaughter was born blind. We figured violin would be an excellent choice of instrument for her. I would like to say thank you for the great lessons and information you post. Also, your Prokofiev was/is excellent!
Don’t worry about callous formation on the fingers of her left hand impacting her ability to read Braille. I had light perception until I was 17, have been playing the violin since I was 11, and I can still read just fine. I would say she’ll be successful with the violin as long as she doesn’t feel like she’s been forced to play it. She may find piano or guitar or any instrument fun to learn, but then again, she may not be interested in music at all when she’s older. Follow her lead on this. :)
As I understand it, Spiccato is not the voluntary movement of pronation when moving the bow, it is rather finding the "balance point" of the bow, where if the bow is moved, it will bounce on its own.
