    This is an absolute relic. As a Titanic fan, I recognize most of the scenes displayed in the footage from the many pictures I´ve seen up to these days, but here I can see how the pictures come alive, and this gives the whole thing a more real dimension. Sincere thanks for all this effort.

    One cannot help but admire these Edwardian ship builders , from the first piece of Keel plating to the finishing touches of the interior splendour , This legend of the shipping line has fascinated me, ever since I first heard the story ,back in 1968 while just starting senior school, I have followed her stories of all good & bad, and still marvel at her massive size, and still wonder how all those workers back in Belfast managed to build such an Icon. My admiration of these people, of all ages and standing, never wavers.You built a legend over a century ago, and the legend just keeps on growing, even though she sits on the bottom of the North Atlantic, rusting away.I take my hat off to the legend and the people who built her.

      Yeah, that'd be amazing. It's just a shame that most people would visit her just because she "looks like the Titanic" rather than actually being interested in the Olympic and her own story. I can see it already, people doing king of the world poses on Olympic's bow and living out their Titanic fantasies because the ships are near identical

      If Olympic were lucky enough to survive the Depression and WW2 (she’d be moored in Southampton, London or Belfast and an 882 foot ship would be a prime target for the Blitz since all three cities were hit) I could see her as a museum like the USS Constitution and SS Great Britain or a hotel/museum hybrid like the two Queens (Mary and Elizabeth II) are today *IF* she were lovingly cared for, as Titanic’s twin she wouldn’t have to worry about funds like Queen Mary is (who’s only real main draw in the mainstream are her ghosts) but I can’t really see Olympic still in service if she were still around. This year will be her 109th birthday on October 11th, at nearly 110 she’d be too delicate and valuable to do transatlantic crossings, and much like Queen Mary who will be 86 this October, Great Britain who turned 177 this July and Constitution who will turn 223 this year, too old. Modern guests who don’t appreciate her history would be the majority and the people who do care for her wouldn’t be able to help her stay in service, she doesn’t have private baths for every cabin, the cheapest ticket’s class would be too bare for most mainstream tourists and many more, heck even today we have people complaining about how the former First Class rooms on Queen Mary are too plain! But in my opinion, I could see Olympic as museum ship yes, a hotel maybe but still in service no, she’s far too delicate and valuable as a historic ship to risk sailing to end up getting damaged and sinking in the ocean, even if she didn’t sink, her parts (hand welded iron, paint) are irreplaceable

    • @KmiiVC
      @KmiiVC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Very, very nice!
    I, for one, have NOT seen a lot of this footage and liked that it was presented chronologically.
    As far as adding sound effects and music to the silent sections, all I can say is --
    THANK YOU!
    As much as I like to watch movies -- I actually love black-and-white, prefer it for historical docudramas and genres like film noir and horror --, the greatest advance ever made in film was the introduction of synchronized sound. It's very hard to sit through SILENT footage.
    The sound effects/Foley FX and music were well-chosen and timed to the original footage, too.

  • @Irena_Posner
    @Irena_Posner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    1:17:56 - "Who knows but that we may need all our shipping in the near future. Is it too late to step in and preserve these ships from destruction?'
    That that is one heck of a sound argument and amazing foresight. 4 years down the road Britain would find itself in a life and death struggle with the battle of the Atlantic.

    I noticed the little dig the reporter had at the captain at 1:12:56 by calling the skipper "Captain Jinx" instead of Captain Binks. I also noticed the deep reticence to speak by the injured officer of the light ship that was cut in two. I think a, 'keep your mouth order' had been given and by the look of him he was none too pleased about it.

    It's kinda sad when you see the beginning and the end of these beautiful ships, how advance they were back in the day, how luxurious, and heroic these ships were. It hits you really hard when you find out that the three years spent on building both the Olympic and shortly after Titanic were put into by a thousand workers putting in their all. only to have one sink a few days later and the other you worked hard on scrapped must've been heart breaking, same for the brittanic too. And it hits even harder when the two remains of Titanic and Brittanic are slowly eroding away... forever leaving future generations only photos and video of what was.

      1. Laying the keel of the Titanic (31 March 1909), Animated Weekly. -Lost.
      2. Transport of Titanic's Largest Anchor in the World (c.1911). 400ft. -Lost.

      4. Titanic leaving Belfast Loch for Southampton (2 April 1912). Gaumont. -Survives

      Hi Erik. No actually it is indeed Titanic and has been independently verified as such. The footage was shot on Saturday the 3rd of February 1912, while she was still under construction and so the A-deck promenade windows were yet to be enclosed. Also, if there is any doubt, the name Titanic is clearly visible on the port bow.

As I wrote, this footage was shot on Saturday the 3rd of February 1912, while Titanic was still under construction (which can be clearly seen in the footage itself - she is obviously not finished).

    Its funny they were supposed be showing the Titanic, but that is also the Olympic. The forward decks on Titanic were inclosed to make room for private first class promenade decks, and to protect those decks from sea spray. That piece of footage must have been taken after the major refit done to the Olympic after Titanic sank, because her wheel house now had the eight windows when it initially had four, but this is still a cool piece of footage; well done.

      No; actually that was the Olympic being launched and in her before her fitting out. and on her maiden voyage. Titanic was never painted gray. That was the Olympic,Titanic was not that well photographed before she sank The only film footage of the Titanic before the sinking, that they have is only about one minute long And it is the shot recreated right at the beginning of Jim Cameron's Movie before they cut to the title scene. Most of the time if you are seeing film footage that is supposed to be of the the Titanic especially the scenes where Capt Smith is inspecting the bridge of the vessel and the stern was filled with passengers waving goodbye, that was the Olympic on her first crossing.

      Menerva4 I think RobandLarry Sampson is referring to the footage at 14:02 which indeed is Titanic moored at at Harland and Wolff shipyard, Belfast. As she is unpainted in the footage it has been dated to Saturday the 3rd of February 1912 (incorrectly shown on the newsreel as April 2nd). However, you are right about many of the other shots being Olympic.

Was this taken during her maiden voyage or at a later date?. There is another photo where she is approaching New York, taken looking towards the forecastle deck and bow, but there are a number of fittings like swan neck vent visible towards the portside of forecastle deck which isn't on the other photo. Why was the forecastle deck changed, was this the modifications done during her refit?. While almost all our footage of Titanic is of the wreck--the building of the Olympic Class ships was one of the MOST documented events of the time. A German photographer was employed to film the whole thing.
    While "Old Faithful" aka The Olympic served well and long it does seem that that it was the fact of Titanic's sinking which earmarks an historic interest in those ships. Olympic never really established herself as "Special" over Mauritania though the latter vessel was smaller and built some years before.
    Titanic's own reign as the largest most luxurious ship of her time was only destined to last a year, as The Hamburg America Line's (Another holding of J.P. Morgan) SS Imperator would have taken both spotlights away from Titanic had she survived.
    Though the undisputed most famous ship ever built it seems unlikely Titanic would have made much of a lasting impression had she NOT sunk as she did on her maiden voyage.

    To all those wondering why Olympic wasn't preserved as some sort of monument to Titanic. Let's examine this logically. Why preserve Olympic? Despite being prohibitively expensive, wasn't she Titanic's sister, virtually identical to her? But people weren't remembering Titanic. At least, they didn't have the same take on her we do today. Titanic sailed on it's first and only voyage over twenty years before Olympic's retirement. The voyage lasted four days and ended in 1,517 deaths. The Titanic disaster was a horrible thing, that ended hundreds of lives and ruined thousands more. An entire town was devastated because of it. They didn't want to remember Titanic, they wanted to forget it. There were monuments and tributes to the heroic actions by passengers and crew that night, and that was seen as sufficient. There was no greater desire to remember Titanic beyond this. Olympic wasn't preserved because that wasn't even a consideration. Her dismantling provided work for hundreds in Inverkeithing. Olympic was dismantled and with her, Titanic was practically forgotten. It wasn't until Walter Lord's book that the public imagination was recaptured, and really, not until Cameron's movie did Titanic enter into the stratosphere of popular culture.
