I can’t believe you’ve not been making much compost until now. The new compost bags are lovely. The fronts are particularly well thought out. Love the little leather handles. Nice touch! 😊
I know - we tend to have delivery of green waste compost a couple of times a year but we've got no excuse not to make more ourselves now! Thanks Clare x
A lovely job to do at this time of the season and you won't stop the rats getting in and they help by turning the compost. Plastic lining helps keep the moisture in or anything that stops the compost falling out. Excellent build my friend's. 🪱🐀🪱🐀Happy gardening, Terry King.
Maybe line with cardboard or plastic to help warm up the contents. I love saving my veggie scraps for composting. I have two daleks on my plot. I definitely need to turn one. Maybe next weekend. Cx
I have a couple of pallet compost bays, but it never gets left long enough to finish. I leave it to break down to a point, but then I use it to mulch the beds once everything is planted out. You will probably be surprised how much you take out of the old ones, if that's what you were planning. I hope you're staying warm and dry.
Yes I think the process will still carry on even if it hasn't broken down completely. I'm looking forward to sorting out the old bays - I think I'll try and move everything into one bin then clear the other two out before starting again with stuff that will take a lot longer to break down. We have had some good stuff from it before so fingers crossed! Thanks Charissa.
Hi Jane, great compost bays, well done to all who helped too. I woyld put chicken wire across the bottom if you have annoying rats so they can't breed in there. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
What a fabulous job...and I can see how those bins are going to work better for you. I'm guessing that once the wind and rain have gone, you'll be running around collecting every last leaf and blade of grass just to fill them!!! 😉😁
Looks great! Even if it might not work, at least try to do something 'else' to keep rodents away. I can't have anything open here in the way of composting because of the squirrels - so I have one of those enclosed rotating composters. It's small but does work for making compost. Interesting in that I just put a container full of kitchen scraps and a bag of torn paper, leaves etc in my composter this morning.
Hi Jane, with all the chicken bedding and leaves you will be flying with the new compost bays. Hopefully the weather is a bit more forgiving this week.
It’s going to be great to get some sort of system going - it’s taken us long enough! Your garden looked beautiful in the snow but it will be nice to have a few warm days ahead! Thanks Ady x
Looking good Mike ,.We have a similar set up and we find we can produce great usable compost in one season .We store browns like leaves and twigs in bags in one ready to add in layers and chop everything small .It should be okay with chicken wire as long as you give it a poke quite regularly .It does add air .
@@susiespearing6165 he’s done a grand job with those doors hasn’t he - I love the handles! I think we’ll still use the bays at the top for things that might take a bit longer but it would be lovely to have some ready after one season! Thanks Susie.
Rats got into our compost bin last year, so we had to empty it & we put heavy wire down, spaced so that mice or rats could not get in, it’s really worth doing, good luck guys 👍
Chicken wire will allow easy access for rats 🐀 ... wire mesh screen is a better option still allowing airflow. At the very least it makes the little beggers work harder to get through! 😉

We've been using a dalek for the chicken bedding - it's worked really well but I think we'll be putting it all in the new bays now. Thanks Clare.

cracking job well done both
Thanks Steven - I think it was worth doing!
Good video
Thank you!
You’re quite right Jane, we all need to compost more, I’m just as guilty 😂
I think if I can see how much money I'll be saving I'll be sure I keep on top of it! Thanks Pammie.
@ here’s hoping you’ll save heaps lol x
Nice compost bays Jane. 😆
Thanks Mags - Mike was an absolute trooper in all that mud! x

We're still in two minds about the whole lining thing (ie: I am!) so we'll see! Thanks Christine.
Should help you compost all the garden waste both. everyone should have compost bays
I've got to get into the habit of bringing it up from home now as well - exciting though!

Ha ha - if there's anything left! Thanks Annie x
Wonderful
Thanks Ingrid!

Oh that sounds really handy - I think we'd need quite a big one though! Those squirrels know where to find the good stuff don't they?! Thank you.
Too fancy for compost!!! 😊
@@Tamsins_Potager ha ha - we could rent them out as ‘rustic’ air b and b’s 😄 Thanks Tamsin.

I have compost bins made of pallets too but mine don't have nice hinged fronts - just another pallet tied on with string!
I'm sure it works just as well - if not better! Thanks Sue.
Well done in that weather!
Ha ha - once we get wet we couldn’t get much wetter! Thank you.

That's a good point Rita - thank you!
