Mine are all one are and I am mulching with sheep's wool to protect my dahlias in the ground, with thick cardboard at an angle to ensure the rain is directed away from the tubers. 🍂🍁Happy gardening, Terry King.
Hi Jane, I have grown dahlias from seed this season, I havent grown lots of flowers in the past and I'm getting quite keen on growing my own. They are in pots, so I'm going to cut them down to the soil & mulch them in the hope they survive, if not, I'll grow from seed again. Your flowers are lovely and your plot is looking good too. At least Mike got some sweet potatoes out of the grow bag and worth trying that method of growing them too. Always worth try. Good advice on growing garlic & collecting your own for the following season to save cost. Great video .thanks for sharing and take care 😊
I've never actually tried dahlias from seed so I might give them a go next year! Yes we've definitely learned a thing or two about growing sweet potatoes - I love that there's always something new. Good luck with the dahlias! Thanks Christine.
Autumn leaves are the most underrated free resource for the garden. I collect my own and my neighbors every year. My to-do list is huge as far as planting. We are close to Summer here in Melbourne Australia. My other major work is compost, compost, compost. I've got compacted clay soil in ground so it needs a lot of organics. Cheers!
And of course leaves will improve your clay soil no end! It's always strange to think of the opposite end of the season - we've been knocking snow off cloches and making sure the water in the chicken house doesn't ice over! Enjoy the warmer weather. Thank you.
I really enjoy your videos! My jobs today are to do more 'chop& drop' in my containers as well as spreading the leaves I gathered last year. I'll also use cardboard and coffee grounds with the leaves. I've decided to leave a lot of the leaves on the ground this year since my yard also needs them. I'm sure I'll add to my list as I start working out there. Yesterday I cut some lettuce, and it was so nice to have a fresh garden salad in Nov. This week our nights will be near or below freezing, so I'll need to do what I can asap.
Mike has actually got quite a few lettuce growing in his polytunnel at the moment - it'll be interesting to see how they fare in our upcoming cold snap! Sounds like you're garden gets well and truly tucked in - I'll be popping cardboard on some of the beds this week as well although we have snow predicted so they may just all disappear! Keep warm and thank you.
There ist a hedge of evergreen portugese laurel to be destroyed over winter, bit by bit. And the one year old cuttings of a bit of everything with berrries, thorns and flowers I could find in the neighbours gardens to be brought intro the garage before any snow and frost can get to them in their containers. Munich can get quite frosty.
Gardening is like housework - never finished! I need to dig out the raised beds in one of my greenhouses to turn it into one for propagating. All part of a complete redesign of my growing space since I discovered the raised beds built 20 years ago were collapsing. My dahlias are grown in pots and have been moved into the conservatory (unheated) over winter.
Ha ha - what's house work?! I love that we adjust our spaces to fit in with our gardening - I'm sure your conservatory is now the dahlia room! We love it though don't we. Thanks Sue.
Great update Jane ❤ The to do list is never ending isn't it. I'm pleased your fire doesn't have any leaks now. Must be fab having a cuppa in a nice warm shed. Your elephant garlic. Clive's look fabulous. Geez worth saving them at those prices isn't it. Good advice regarding dahlia tubers, polytunnel does get a lot of moisture doesn't it. I have elephant garlic in a cardboard box going mouldy but still not planted! Luckily most of my elephant garlic is planted but only for the flowers as I planted them amongst the foxgloves 🤭 You're worse than me leaving your Malvern plants till now 😂 Good luck next year with the sweet potatoes. I'm giving it another go too. Have a great week ❤ x
Oh it is really lovely warming up now - thing is it's difficult to get back out and do any gardening! Elephant garlic is really quite an expensive thing to grow now isn't it - great that we can reuse the cloves and create more though, even if the odd one goes mouldy! Yes we'll try again with the sweet potatoes - if we don't try we'll never know! Thanks Linda x
My sweet potatoes were hilarious. I completely forgot about them, so they were stuck in a pot way too long and didn't get planted until July, so basically came out as they went in, as a small twisted ball. Next year! Shame you lost some dahlias, Spring was such a damp squib, so fingers crossed for next year. All my dahlias got gall last year. I threw most away and planted a couple in pots to see how they would do. One flowered well, but small blooms and the other didn't flower at all, so probably need to start again I think. Looking chilly this week, no snow forecast for us thankfully, as I'm not ready for it lol! Thanks Jane.
Yes I think our sweet potatoes definitely needed longer - maybe next year. Crikey I didn't even know dahlias could get gall - sounds nasty! Loads of gorgeous dahlia varieties out there to try - Great Silence was my absolute favourite this year so maybe it's time to give yourself a treat! Thank you.
Hi jane , great video 👌 if some of your dahlias got mould on them last year yry dusting them with sulphur powder after drying them out and before storing ..i pop mine in a paper bag then throw some sulphur powder in and give a good shake . All my dahlias survived last year using this method 👍
@@deborahthomas2753 I do something similar with cinnamon but I didn’t catch them early enough last year - think I might use your bag and shake trick next time! Thanks Deborah!
I really need to go and buy more compost for the garden and spread it on all the raised beds. I have put it off for quite some time as I have been doing other little jobs like mowing and generally fluffing around!
Not sure if it might help but the freedom forest garden grow a variety called T65 . Maybe you could save one 🙈 and try again next year so they become more acclimated to our weather. Anyway a small harvest is amazing and shows next year will be better x Jane I'm actually using my mower still but on a high setting so I can keep collecting leaves🍁🍂🍁 and make life easier on myself. Sure neighbours think I'm mad 😂but what they don't know gives them something to talk about.. I've left the leaves that's fallen on the raised beds but might pop some more on. I have 1 1/2 builders bags already. Isn't it strange what we gardeners get so excited over 😂 This week it was leaves and worms x Have a great week x
Ha ha - of course we're mad - we're gardeners! Honestly our plot had seemingly no worms when we first started so even now I beam when I find them! Thanks Chrissie.
I mulch with leaves too. Dahlias I leave in and cover them with the enormous quantity of ferns that I cut down every year - works well in central Scotland. And no I don't leave the ferns to 'look beautiful covered in frost' my ferns just go brown and collapse.
Hiya Jane. Your shed looks v. Cosy with the log burner on. I have most of my Dahlias dug up now - bar a pot I’ve just remembered about - oops. The weather really has cooled down now hasn’t it? Have a great week. Mags.
It certainly has! We have our log burner at home on now as well and I'm still sitting here with a blanket over my legs! I think we've got our dahlias up just in time - brrrrrrrr! Thanks Mags x
@@adysveggarden ha ha - I know - ‘do as I say and not as I do’! They’d be fine hanging in the shed initially but I do worry they’d get damp eventually so they’ll be in our utility room in the new year. Thanks Ady x
So what's on your to do list - let me know in the comments below!😀
Very nice....🎉🎉
Thanks 😊

Oh now that's a great idea about angling the cardboard. Thanks Terry x
Leaves are natures mulch - YES! With you there Jane 🍁🍂🍃
Ahh the doggy looks so cosy by the fire!!
@doras.allotment ha ha - thanks Dora!
His favourite spot - whether at home or at the plot!
dry well and store them in shavings Jane put some dessication sachets in the box and they be fine
I might just do that Tony - thank you x
I really need to collect my leaves. Glad the log burner solution has worked jane! I need to get my dahlias up too! Thanks jane 😊🌱
Honestly the best thing about collecting the leaves is that they''re FREE! Thanks Danny x

I've done sweet potatoes twice, first time was a success, second was eaten by bugs underground while the leaves looked better than the year before.
Oh no - not sweet potato bugs as well - there's something to look forward to! Thanks Robin x
@@JanesGrowingGarden Well I actually think it was the roly poly bugs/wood lice. But ya all looked marvy as far as leaves go, but trouble underneath.
