      As an English person, honestly, Lindsay Lohan's was a little odd sounding, but forgivable because she was young.
      Natalie Portman's is perfectly fine, just too posh for the role. She sounded completely English, but it almost sounds like her dialogue coach wasn't teaching her the right kind of accent for the film.

    • @GamingDrummer89
      @GamingDrummer89 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm surprised they didn't put Natalie Portman's accent from her role as Queen Amidala in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace here...her accent was pretty terrible in that role, though I didn't come to notice until YEARS later (I was 10 when this movie was released and I saw it in theaters a couple or three months later...my discernment then was practically non-existent). Not as bad as some others here (James Franco), but still noticeably off to the point where it's awkward to listen to.

      No, your opinions are actually invalid, there are no people who slip into and out of American accents now and then while speaking among ourselves, as the clips show. We don't do that, like you don't slip into and out of an English accent while drawling among yourselves in badly spelled English, you'd have to be deluded to think that.

      @@Oscuros what are you on about? I was making a point that very few people speak like that because
      A) the accent is quite bad
      B) Posh people are'nt all related to the queen. So everyone from Britain doesn't sound like they're straight out of Downton Abbey
      So before you tell me that I'm completely wrong and that Britain and the English language are somehow the work of Satan, please consider that I was just trying to make a point about her accent being sub par. But unfortunately there are people like you who simply cannot understand that I was simply voicing my opinion. Now I'm being told that Britain is hated by everyone so I thought I'd inquire. What country are you from?

      Oscuros I’m not a foreigner and I agree with the other person on how it’s not that bad. They’re not talking about her slipping in and out of an American accent (because Lindsey literally plays a British and American role in that same movie so it makes sense to switch). It’s not that bad for an American, and it’s not that deep 🤦🏼‍♀️

    As far as the singing part goes, British people don't always sing in their normal accents, some of the best singers never do no matter where they are from. Example: If someone did not know before the fact that Adele was British and only heard her sing they could easily mistake her for an American. George Michael, Freddie Mercury and Phil Collins are a few more who I don't pick up a particularly accented performance from, they find what is unique and iconic for them.

    There is no such thing as a British accent. There are various regional accents, but no definitive British accent. What Hollywood percieves as a British Accent is actually the Received Pronounciation English accent.

All 4 have their own standard accents and many regional accents. Therr is no thing as one British accent and certainly not one that people in the arts have to follow.

      The United Kingdom isn't a country, and neither is Britain, despite what many people believe. The UK is a kingdom (hence the kingdom in its name) which includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Island. I hate when people get mixed up. It's simple geography, but America still refuses to learn it.
      P.S. I mostly agree with your statement, but if an actor is able to use a convincing accent, then they should still be hired. It's only when an accent is bad that a person from that country is needed.
      Rant officially over

    • @jessicataylor7174
      @jessicataylor7174 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      I completely disagree as that is not necessary. Get actors who have the training and/or ability to learn accents, hire an accent and dialect coach and most importantly give them sufficient time to work on it. The major reason behind poor performance with accents is the actor not having enough time to perfect it and the directors/producers saying, "It'll do". Actors frequently need to learn new skills for roles, they're usually allowed sufficient time for this. Accents for some reason get little or no time allocated then the actor and film are criticised.

      Britain is the name of the country. That's perfectly suitable. While English might be more specific, there is nothing wrong with calling them British accents, which is what some people have suggested. Can somebody have an American accent, or do I have to specify Southern American? Perhaps that offends Southern Americans so I have to specify Texas. Perhaps that offends some people in Texas so I have to specify Dallas. Perhaps that offends people in Dallas and I have to specify a south-side Dallas, Texas, American accent. That is the end result of your logic so I think I will continue to call them American and British accents and I will be as specific as I damn well want to be.

    • @arandombard1197
      @arandombard1197 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I know, I'm from the UK. So if I want to call my own accent British rather than English, then that's none of your business. England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are not separate countries, they are constituent regions that were historically separate countries. Its as equally pedantic to point out that somebody has a Kentucky accent, not a US accent. Canada and Mexico are separate countries from the US. In my example, they were all sub-regions of the same country. Its funny that you are pointing that my example was bad when in fact yours was the terrible one.

      Britain is made up of 4 DIFFERENT countries with completely different accents from each other whereas America is one country. • @heliotropezzz333
    @heliotropezzz333 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    I think this video is overly critical. I can only judge by what's in the clips having not seen these films (except for Mary Poppins) Some of these English accents are o.k. Not bad. Much better than Hollywood actors used to manage. Some of the objections seem to be that some of the accents are too posh, but posh accents do exist, although they are not in the majority. There is no single British accent so you have to pick which one you want to do. Dick Van Dyke sets the standard for a poor attempt at a British (cockney) accent but it's somehow endearing because he does it with such spirit. 2 and 1 aren't so good but at 1 he is making a good effort. Tony Curtis does a terrible imitation of a British accent in "Some Like it Hot" when he's trying to imitate Cary Grant" but it's meant to be funny, so again, it's o.k. He did set a Dick Van Dyke type low, in The Black Shield of Falworth, when he said in a strong New York accent "Yonder lies the castle of my fodder (father)" but it's a hoot of a film anyway - very entertaining for its time. The most irritating performance for me is Kevin Costner as Robin Hood making no attempt at all to disguise or modify his American accent.

    • @donngodfather285
      @donngodfather285 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      In "Some Like it Hot", I agree Curtis' accent was funny and off-key but wasn't it supposed to be? Also, Cary Grant is a weird accent to place, because from what I know about him, he tried to lose his British accent as an actor and channel a Mid-Atlantic accent --something between British & American, like those posh New England people of early last century (i.e. Katharine Hepburn)

    Alright watchmojo, if you're going to create a list like this, either call it "Worst ENGLISH accents", or include Welsh and Scottish examples too, I would have left out Lohan and included Mel Gibson with his abysmal attempt at a Scottish accent!

      James Doohan as Scotty in Star Trek. He was American Irish so an odd casting. And later Patrick Stewart as Picard who never remotely tries a French accent. I suspect that was a deliberate choice though.

    As an American let me just say we don't mean any harm about the whole: British or English thing. I am pretty sure you have heard a Boston accent, New York accent, or Californian accent and just called it an American accent and we don't complain about that. At least we aren't calling Scottish accents English accents etc.. If England is in Britain, then it is still accurate to say that it's a British accent.

    If you live in London you will hear the huge diversity of different accents even among Brits. If they lived in different parts of the country, travelled around, lived abroad for any length of time, you will notice it doesn't sound strictly like traditional RP. They are very small nuances, like in word stress, intonation, rhythm, and pronunciation. Not many people sound like the stereotypical "Brit" Americans think of, then again many can't tell the difference between a Liverpool, Brummie, or Yorkshire accent. I had a friend that was surprised to learn there are many different accents or more accurately dialects in the UK.

    I've had native speakers in four different languages tell me I do a perfect accent, yet I can't do a British accent to save my life, my own native tongue. The closest I get is when I recite Monty Python sketches -- I think I manage to do it well, I get laughs for it.
