Syd writes with such a simplicity from the heart. His creative talent was not fully appreciated coz the music biz puts high value in common comnercial value songs or hit songs.
for some reason i never digged this syd tune (which is odd since i enjoy the majority of his work), gave it a year and came back to listen and this was my first thought, syd was a genius

Yeah, his rhythms can be anything but simple or easy to follow sometimes-octopus for example. It’s erratic, and that’s part of its allure for me. That’s the artist, the unpredictable.
Some of Syd's most inspired and haunting guitar playing. The sound of an untamed spirit howling in the moonlight. "Inside me I feel alone and unreal" 2 years before I was born Syd had already expressed how I was going to feel for most of my life. Syd's music helps me to feel less alone and unreal.
Same here man, Syd was and will always be a legend. His music is like when the sun shines through the falling rain. there’s nothing like it, and there never will be again. May Syd Barrett rest in eternal peace.
Interestingly enough, this song always reminds me of my mom who died when I was 13. I was very close to her, as Syd was to his. This song is the most poignant evocation of that feeling of loss, of childhood lost, of feeling alone in the world.
+Alexandre Rodrigues Syd Barrett's songs always cheer me right up. Even this one has a bittersweet cathartic quality to it that makes me all fuzzy and warm in the feels.
Wonderful song that I first discovered in the late 1980’s. ‘Syd the beat’ has always been fondly remembered by both his early girlfriend and the Floyd. Unfortunately, he was not able to carry on with his love life, perhaps after his Lindsey Corner love period. He was very capable of writing beautiful love songs and this song is one fine example. However, Syd did not appear to have a filter and was capable of providing a narrative for those deep inner thoughts that most of us keep suppressed within our subconscious. When the musical aspirations had become more serious, with the unthinkable aspect of the Floyd becoming POP stars, the reality must of weighed heavily on Syd. I can only assume that Syd, being a painter, was frustrated with all the hoopla and control maintained around him. Imagine being a painter and you have a critic hanging over your shoulder telling you, “wait, that brush stroke that you just expressed needs to be changed or removed because I am in control of the finished painting.” This song has beautiful and soaring slide work in addition to a heartfelt chorus. The slide work in the background is somewhat reminiscent of Duane Allman’s contribution to the Derek and the Dominoes song-Layla, as that song winds down and fades out. Layla, had been produced a couple of years latter. I don’t prefer to compare the two songs but do note that those two guitarists are thought of as being pioneers of an ever evolving soundscape. I am glad to see others who appreciate this song as much as I do and without seeing that same cliche used over and over again. This long post has been inspired by the overuse of the ‘Shine on you Crazy Diamond’ anthem that appears in so many other posts throughout Floyd territory. There is so much more to be said, in comparison to, the well intended anthem that the Floyd had ultimately memorialized with their dear childhood friends absence in their lives.
This, "Two of a Kind," "Golden Hair," and "Terrapine" are my favorite solo Syd. Naturally, it's mighty tough to beat either "Interstellar Overdrive" or "Astronomy Domine" from his tragically short tenure with Pink Floyd.
This song holds so many memories and I'v only just heard it 4 the second time in my life. What a soft but powerful song... Well done Syd Barrett..... Missed by many.
Right up there with Skip Spence's 'Oar' for the most revealing and haunting document of a beautiful mind winding down and retreating inside itself forever. Skip was a junkie, and Syd was an acid casualty. But their respective drugs of choice only unleashed their inner complexities and insecurities, laying them bare for all to see and hear. This puts mainstream 'confessional' pop music to shame. This has all the terror of Joy Division's 'Love will tear us apart', yet at a loping pace.
If there is a God and an afterlife, then Syd’s longing here - which continued in some form in his long 35-year twilight - has been answered. In our realm, though, his life was such a tragedy.
as a former acid head I can say that Syd Barrett was the best music to listen to ALONE, all alone. you could be on any trip and feel just fine. other music works this way, in a way, but with Barrett's solo stuff it's almost essential. either that or he just made me feel alone. but it was good.
..Covering & select the original tracks was a stroke of genius Ivo Watts-Russell's!!..."This Mortal Coil" project is an absolute fantastic work!! cheers, Greg....🦇
I hardly ever listen to Floyd's early albums but I spent yesterday listening to Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and Syd even came up in a conversation with some friends who aren't Pink Floyd fans. It wasn't til I logged onto Facebook that I realized what the day was. I'll take this as some sort of a message from the beyond.

+samantha huddleston evrey morning i go to work no lie i hear this song cause of you...inside me i feel alone and unreal...but the way u kiss will always be a special thing too me
i guess u could agree, if u know we just make it short. His problem was psychological and determined by the circumstances he got into, with the personality he had, not as much based on drugs and neurological madness as the "fans" would like it to be. The floyd certainly did not follow him, they wanted to clean it up and make it a marketable product, while certainly syd wanted to drive it further away from any commercial concern and into his pure, wild experimentation. He identified with his art
In my humble opinion, the best love song ever.

@@graceantonio3573 MR BARRETT WAS A GENIUS.....HIS MUSIC IS NOT BORING....HE WAS A MUSICAL ARCHITECT....Greetings from Argentina
The world was never ready for Syd Barrett.
One of the saddest and most beautiful songs.
I was born when he was recording this song 27. 05 1968. Love you Uncle Syd
Magic!
There is a tenderness and a mystery to this....
syds music is simple, when you have aquired true knowledge you realise the simple things make you happy and they are all that really matters.
It may be simple, but he uses simple techniques and chords very differently and interestingly.
Yeah, his rhythms can be anything but simple or easy to follow sometimes-octopus for example. It’s erratic, and that’s part of its allure for me. That’s the artist, the unpredictable.
"inside me i feel....alone and unreal...and the way you kiss will always be a very special thing to me"
Beautifully trippy and otherworldly.
Barrett has that primordial essence no one else has

this goes far, far beyond "melancholy"
His stuff is forever fresh. Amazing
The slide is simply eloquent. He still had it. Long live beautiful renaissance man Syd Barrett.
For me, one of the saddest song ever written. :(
