    The fact Apple Dan design mass produced items that look so damn good and clean inside is mightily impressive, a few high end PCs can match it but from what I’ve seen they are hand built low volume like high end custom gaming PCs.

    I’m a huge fan of OWC’s excellent instructional videos. So, as many owners performing upgrades on these machines will be looking at this teardown for guidance, I tell you what would be really useful here while everything is being stripped out…. A mention of what tools are being used at each point, and any tips to keep in mind when re-assembling.
    For example, stripping out the CPU heat sink (excuse me Apple, I mean the Thermal Module), requires both a Torx T8 screwdriver, and a 152mm long Torx T15 bit. Also, and as advised by Apple in their technicians manual, the latter should use a torque screwdriver, set to 1.2Nm, in order to properly secure the heatsink to the CPU on re-assembly.

  • @robeigner4390
    @robeigner4390 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    At the 7:42 mark, I noticed what looked like three 4-switch dip switches. Is there anything on the motherboard that says what they're used for? Wondering if there's some configuration Apple is doing depending on which version you buy. The disassembly shows how much thought Apple engineers put into this computer. Only one cable and I would have thought that would have been an easy cable to get rid of but maybe not because of the sliding action needed to remove the speaker assembly.
    For all of you PC lovers, I challenge you to actually build a comparable PC to the Mac Pro and get it to work without a whole lot of cables and extra (loud) fans or water cooling. The lack of cables means far less electrical problems while we've already seen and heard reviews of how quiet the fans are and how well they work to keep everything cool.

      Design choices...
      Instead of 8pin PCI-E cables for powering GPUs Apple went with a proprietary MPX connector that plugs into next the PCI-E slot and delivers up to 450watts. With this choice Apple spared 4 thick 8pin power cables for the Vega Pro Duo GPU or 8 in case of two Pro Duos. The mainboard gets its power directly from the proprietary PSU via a thick connector. They also spared out the(2) 8pin EPS cable(s) for CPU power delivery. Drives are connected via m.2 so no SATA cables either. And there you have it. An almost cable free rig.

      In novadays it's called UEFI - Unified Extensible Firmware Interface. Every PC motherboard has own system to check hardware. Mostly it check first if the CPU, Memory etc works correctly, then the machine will turns on.

    • @dschwartz783
      @dschwartz783 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      BIOS hasn’t been used by any PC manufacturer for a long time now. These days, they use UEFI.
      A lot of people call UEFI, “UEFI BIOS”, but that’s because they are confused. UEFI is one thing, and BIOS is another much older technology.

    • @dschwartz783
      @dschwartz783 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @KMSMista PCs do not use a knockoff version. UEFI is what came after EFI, which was originally an Intel technology. Intel (and I believe in conjunction with Microsoft), created EFI originally for their Itanium platform. Apple adopted it because they wanted to switch to the Intel architecture, but couldn't justify downgrading from Open Firmware (which Apple used on their PowerPC Macs) to BIOS. At the time, it was indeed rare in the PC world, but eventually EFI evolved into UEFI (Intel was involved in some way), and it became the standard in the PC world as well.

    The VRM setup on this mainboard is just a joke for a LGA 3647 platform. I mean this 6+4 phases you get with your typical 120$ Asus mainboard for LGA 1151, which is designed for 95w TDP CPUs. The 28 core Mac Pro CPU (Intel W 3275M ) is a 205w TDP rated CPU, which will definitely wants to see more than 10 VRM phases. Other mainboard manufacturers put huge VRM setups on their LGA 3647 platforms, like this one www.asus.com/de/Motherboards/ROG-Dominus-Extreme/
    Hate to say this, but for a at least 6000$ system, the Mac Pros Mainboards sucks!

      I would also ditch the Vega II Pro Duo(5200$) and buy four Radeon VII cards (700$ each, 2100$) instead. Safes you 3100$ while enjoying 2 times the FP32 performance compared to the Pro Duo card.
