10:40 the yassification of true crime has been of the worst things ever. Winemoms doing their makeup, talking bout a cannibal or something, while toting that what they do is somehow morally superior and totally not exploitative compared to idk, horror film makers.
True crime has found its real audience, and now that creators don't have to stick to the more subdued TV format to reach them they make this weirdly blasé content. Like these were real people man, shit. Even if you just are fascinated by it I don't know how you can do anything other than be sad while watching it. Is it a difference in their capacity for empathy? I'm not trying to be an asshole but are their brains just not as good at stopping to really think about what it means to experience these BEYOND horrific deaths, and the trauma it causes their families? I only make that argument because these things actually happened the EXACT way it's being described, and you just live your life with this in your ear for hours a day?
What I find disturbing is how there are plenty of good documentaries out there that try to explain what was wrong with a criminal, show the impact on the victims' families, and then there are ten times as many that try to show the criminal as some sort of misunderstood genius or quirky romantic or poor e-boy that just needed a friend, presented in a "cool" way
its the exact sort of thing that makes me not want to call myself a true crime fan, even tho i do enjoy it.
but for me, im at least very particular about what i do like, id like to think? like, i love forensic files. i love how they just, show the info in a scientific way, and break down how everything works. theres interviews with real people involved, with the bare minimum of (mostly wordless) reenactments alongside em. and they always get the 'bad guy' while still keeping the focus of the show on the victim(s). i like those the most, when theyre more like short documentaries. american justice and unsolved mysteries are good too (altho the latter does go into more than just true crime with, like, ghosts)
i cannot STAND all the sensationalized bullshit thats out now, with the dramatic music stings, the horribly cheesy reenactments, the slow motion camera stuff... ugh. its very obviously trauma porn, as vin described it.

Kind of felt like he was trying to run through it as fast as possible at some parts. Was hoping he’d stop and appreciate some of the Easter eggs, but he just runs right past them and misses them completely.

You know, Blizzard didn’t really care about porn and seemed to be fine with its existence until shareholders complained within a month or so of the first game’s release.
They launched a half-hearted campaign to delete videos from the net, seemingly just to appease them but not really trying. So if anything, I’m sure encrypting the models would be an extension of this, assuming the company hasn’t become even more unhinged.
For anyone interested, there's an SD model addon available on Game banana, works flawlessly and uses Opposing Force's models so quality is the same as OG Opposing Force (a little better than OG HL)

There's a PCVR version that is currently in open beta but is supposed to come out as a Steam mod in a couple of weeks.

The ms robot arcade machine has to be in reference to the show mr robot starring Rami Malek and Christian slater. Aired between 2015-2019 for 4 seasons with a heavy dose of tech lingo,white-hat hacking, anonymous (with a dollar store guy mask), drama, crypto, conspiracy, and character development. Highly recommend to all my fellow geeks. Especially recommend it to hackers, programmers, and network specialists. I think it's on Amazon. It used to be on the USA network on cable TV
Was just checking the comments to see if anyone posted this lol. It's definitely a Mr. Robot reference, same font and mask. Finding it caught me off guard when I played the mod, really cool to see, it's easily one of my all time favorite shows.
For what it's worth, true crime podcasts are nothing new. TV shows doing the same thing have been around for decades.

Making mods for HalfLife 1 is by far easier than HalfLife 2, which I'm sure is why people still make mods for HalfLife.
People talk a lot about the difficulty in Source modding but it was actually the first modding I ever did, though I mostly worked on HL2 Beta stuff.
@@mellowyellow6572 I remember trying to make levels in Source versus Valve Hammer and Source had needless complexities. For example in order to do anything with a glass texture, or transparent texture, you need to use three different programs in the toolset. Plus for rendering things out in the distance, it makes things appear 16 times bigger and you can't(at least at the time) adjust that. A bunch of quarky things like that turned me off to working on anything with Source. I went on to working in Unreal Tournament 3, which is still one of the easiest level editors, but UT3 has other issues like folder management being all stupid and of course no one playing UT3 anymore.
@@saurelius5217 Yeah I mean it was the first engine I worked with so I kinda just assumed those quirks were par for the course. It wasn’t until I started working with Unity that I realized development could be a breeze. I still like what I’ve made with Source much more though, I did a lot of work rebuilding HL2 Beta maps from scratch.

I think True Crime can spark plenty of peoples interest in finding these people and such. I think Podcasts should be a little bit more respectful of the victim and make fun of the serial killers if they are gonna do anything for entertainment. I find nothing wrong with it. Its history but Morbid history. When does it become fucked up story telling to history? The same time gravedigging becomes archaeology? I dunno it sucks people die and serial killers exist but we need to learn about them somehow. And I DO infact have a morbid curiosity but also like the info.
seeing how crusty HL1 can be even when really modded makes me glad chatmembers here told me "just play black mesa instead" because man those box puzzles look like they feel like ass.
I don't think I'll ever get tired of seeing Half-Life mods! These always end up being good. Also from this we have John the Trauma Clown to haunt our dreams, guud! 🤡🤌 Anyway though thanks for sharing Vin, this was a fun mod to watch.
