"if you don't watch it till the end, a titan-sized yokai will come after you" I just binge watched your whole channel. If I can make throught 200 years of Fujiwara having control over the Heian court by marrying their daughters to them, I can make it through a 10 minutes yokai video easy peasy!
Mikoshi-nyudo is my favorite youkai. One of the attractions of Mikoshi-nyudo is that it has obvious weaknesses. The phenomenon of becoming larger when looking up and becoming smaller when looking down is interesting as an irony of power. In modern novels, Mikoshi-nyudo is used as a metaphor for overestimation.
That youkai can also symbolized that if you're looking up at peoples you thought are better (richer, prettier, smarter, more popular, etc) than you and want to be them, there would be no end because you will always find someone who's better at you, "there's anothe sky above the sky" and all that. But if you look down, you'll eventually reach the ground and can't go down further.
I'm glad that these stories came about because giant yokais set the stage for Godzilla, giant space robots, giant naked titans, I've even seen giant naked anime ladies. Truly, where would we be without such lore????
I vaguely remember stories about giants in Europe. The female ones tended to be a nasty piece of work... They were only about 3m tall, but had a nasty habit of either hugging you to death, or self-inserting themselves into your household and eat everything... There's even a song about one, which is quite famous: Herr Mannelig.
I'm making this comment to personally thank you. I am in the process of writing a book that is all about Japanese history, yokai, and the Japanese gods and it has been difficult trying to learn and understand it. But with your videos, I am able to understand everything and will be able to make an action pack book with my characters. Thank you, Linfamy.
I actually heard about this one yōkai called “ Daidarabotchi “ its a yōkai that they said sometimes it poses as a mountain range when its sleeping their resemblances are bald headed priests, big rolling eyes, a long tongue, and pitch black skin- If you search up Daidarabotchi the folktale pictures are creepy-
I like the idea of an Umi bozu being driven off by a ship's crew all starting to smoke. Captain: " Alright boys, smoke em if you got em." * aggressive toke sounds*
I've always thought of Umi bōzu as one of the creepiest yokai. I remember reading that they might be the souls of people with no one to watch their graves, so they take refuge in the sea. Truly one of my favorites! Edit. I'm going to bake myself a cake! xD
Interestingly, that tobacco smoke thing also shows up in Irish folklore, where it's sometimes said that all kinds of fairies and fair folk really, really hate the smell of it.
@@Linfamy Difficult. You’d think Shinto magick would be sorta easy. But Kotodama is harder to learn than incantations. And Yokai are spirits, so they have 0 problems doing this sort of thing. So yeah, it’s got it’s ups and downs but it’s better than being crushed by a massive toad or a long necked priest
*Me as an onmiyoji/shrine maiden who use yokai allies diligently writing down all of this information to turn into my DM for our Japanese folktale inspired RP session* Heheheh this gon be goood😁🌸👘😎
There are many other giant yōkai. Like ōmukade, tearai oni, amemasu, ikuchi, akkorokamui, yamata no orochi, akugyo, gashadokuro, and I think the largest might be the daidarabotchi
Your Videos are always great to watch and funny. They really helped me to understand some anime references about Japans history, mythology and folklore. I am currently watching an anime called Hozuki's Coolheadness it's a great comedy anime, based about the japanese hell and about japanese mythology and folklore. Keep going with the awsome videos !
With all these yokai having stretchy and shapeshiftey powers, I’m guessing people made them up while tripping on some hallucinogenic plants. Seems legit.
I know Linfamy did a whole video about the origin and traits of the gashadokuro, but I was still kinda hoping to see it here. Easily the best giant yokai ever.
Linfamy: "this video is cursed, watch until the end or giant yokai will come." A family member of mine that have a banyan tree said to be inhabitance by a giant monkey like demon: "too late"
There's an anime called kakuryo no yadomeshi, which has a lot of folklore characters in it, including kitsune zashiki warashi and even umi bozu....maybe you can check it out?
The giant toad is also known to be friends with ninjas from the Hidden Leaf village and are immune to any attacks from annoying, idiotic water goddesses.
5:53 that's actually the handiwork of a different Yokai, called a Funa-Yuurei, or Boat-spirit. it's a boat filled with drowned souls who capsize your ship by pouring water into it with ladles.
Hey Linfamy! The city near where I live, Yokkaichi, has a mascot that is an Onyudo. During the Yokkaichi festival there is a giant Onyudo puppeted by 6 hidden people that stretches to over 7 m, and I believe it's the tallest such puppet in Japan (th-cam.com/video/SH2LCmEsv8c/w-d-xo.html). It was originally built in 1805 and was never rebuilt, just broken pieces have been replaced over time, and during the off season he usually chills on random street corners under the covered shopping arcade, so sometimes you turn the corner and are surprised he's there. There is an old tale about a giant rokurokubi here, but other evidence of the Yokkaichi festival imply in the Edo period it was a hundred demon parade and only the Onyudo stuck around. In addition the little yuruchara mascot of Yokkaichi is Konyudo-kun, the little baby of the Onyudo daddy. He's super cute.
I wonder what you do if you’re able to grab the bucket and now are left holding a bucket with a yokai in it? Like just holding it randomly and asking your friend “okay, now what do we do with it?”
I watched the first episode.. at the point where a titan reached in and ate a person or specifically a mother I believe, and the blood splattered everywhere.. it scared me. ALOT.. never again.

The more i look at Yokai mythos and stuff like pokemon and kaiju, the more i see that japan has always been a land of monsters

You fight almost everyone of these yokais in Nioh. Glad this channel has supplementary information for the stuff that intrigues me so in that game.

These videos are so entertaining. I really love learning about these yokai.
The Umi Bozu is my favorite yokai. I'm actually using them as a basis for a space entity that attacks spaceships in a story I'll write in the future.
Those 5 Japanese giant stories are so cool!
Always amazed by your content 👍
The gashadokuro would probably have been included, but TH-cam isn’t ready for such a big and spooky boi.
That big skeleton boi is my favorite yokai
I've always thought of Umi bōzu as one of the creepiest yokai. I remember reading that they might be the souls of people with no one to watch their graves, so they take refuge in the sea.
Truly one of my favorites!
Edit. I'm going to bake myself a cake! xD
They appeal to both Thalassophobia and Megalophobia! Not many monsters out there that can hit two or more phobias at once
@@the13throse That's right! And the uncertainty of what they really look like also makes them super creepy to me!
They're extremely creepy, but for me my fear of them comes from how masterfully Eiichiro Oda uses the myth in One Piece.
*stands up, right fist on chest, the other behind the back*. And this is how I watched the whole video.
😂
That joke about having no one to do... Oof that hits close to home
Would love if you could do episodes on Nioh, Nioh 2 and Sekiro :)

Thing is I’m trying to become a sorcerer so Yokai coming into my room doesn’t sound like a threat. Bring it bro!
How's the sorcerer training going?
I just hired Kevin Fast, the World’s Strongest Priest to guard me from Yokai while sleep. He reads the best bedtime stories.
