- With the news of Toys R Us returning to the US, here's a glimpse of what might be coming to a mall near you. Toys R Us Toy Box stores are new smaller pop-ups that have a surprisingly wide selection plus some new fun upgrades.

Hopefully this works out here in the U.S.
To have no proper toy store that little kids can go to,just isn’t right! I have so many great memories of my dad taking me to Kiddie City to buy Star Wars toys.Such good times.Every child should be able to have those memories also.
When I was a kid we would go to TRU or KB Toys and I was always excited... Back then GI Joe was still heavy on the shelves but so was Star Trek (my first love), TMNT, Transformers, Lego, and wait.... Thirty years later and they're still peddling many of the same things! haha "Autobots, ROLL OUT!!"
I agree. I remember taking the city bus to Toys R Us for the first time alone. Well with my friend. I went to buy Donkey Kong for the Atari 2600. Yikes I'm old...lol. But also Mego Superheroes and Star Wars. Plus we had another smaller toy store on 27th street called Toy Country USA. I had been looking for the Jawas for months. They were delayed, then sold out. I drove the owner nuts calling. I was such a tool. But anyway I walked in and he had 3 of them hidden on the top of the revolving pegs. He just pointed up. I looked and saw Chewie, Han, and Luke. He said behind them. I moved Chewie aside and there was my grail.....JAWAS!!!! The memories of having a toy store was and is awesome. I have so many memories of walking through Toys R Us and just being amazed. Kay Bee Toyz as well. It was like you entered a fantasy land.
Now it's all online and cold. I appreciate new technology but some old stuff is better to me.

Truth: 1 year ago today. I walked out of a Toys R Us store in the US for the last time. 20+ years with the company.

The Biggest issue with Toys R Us at least here in the States was the Toy Prices ... Way Too High ... You could Easily go on Amazon/Ebay/Walmart & get them for Way Less,
If Toys R Us does not price to Compete they will see the same outcome.
I was a kid in the 90s and I have so many memories of Toys r Us, it and KB Toys were the best places to go. I liked KB because it was mostly action figures straight to the point no fluff. Toys R Us was the big show, if you wanted the whole shebang.

I hope they get some NECA, McFarlane, and Marvel Legends, etc. I love, I mean my son loves them!
The adults are the ones with the money, at least give us a shelf or two of some “adult collectible articulating action figures” or as some people call them “toys”.
Throw in some video games too, easy sales, small footprint.

It's hard to to hold back the tears of nostalgia of remembering going into a toysrus store as a kid. I hope they come back to here in Texas, even better if it came back to it's old huge building in my city which was the same I went to, so that one day if I have kids I can take them there and share the experience I had. I'd rather have them play with physical toys rather than have them staring at a screen all day.

Last time I visited India, the toy store at the mall was very similarly structured to this Toys R Us. In fact they had a play station where you could race RC Cars. Great video Michael!

This actually works quite well. It's simple, to the point, and has a smattering of everything without having the warehouse feel of the original in the 1980s.
That said, you can feel that a lot of the magic is missing from this version and the original. Part of the reason the original TRU worked so well IS because of the warehouse feel. What a lot of people don't know is that TRU was actually a chain of multiple warehouses with storefronts, serving a dual purpose.
It was the 90s and early 2000s that ruined it and became its downfall when they remodeled and restructured losing that original design and appearance.
During its heyday, if you couldn't find it at TRU, you couldn't find it anywhere. They stocked so many items and lines and such a large number that you could find what you were looking for if you really wanted to. Cases upon cases of toys and bikes, etc. MOTU, Transformers, G.I. Joe... all of it. Back then, Walmart and Target were regional retailers and no one could really compete with TRU.
When they lost their way, when they restructured, that was when they actually failed, just watching their demise coming and then finally the end was inevitable. Now that everything has to be trendy and hip and downsized and scaled differently, a boutique version of TRU will probably work really well (if there's still an audience) but it'll never be quite the same.
One more problem, people laugh at big box retailers, but Amazon, Target and Walmart really have stepped up and made toys a bigger focus and they tend to stock them more and more. I'm a Transformers and Power Rangers collector and I've had plenty of good luck finding all of the newest stuff through those three. Especially Walmart, as of late. When TRU was open in recent years, it was always online and hardly ever at retail, sadly.

Thanks for the sneak peak. It is a lot larger then I was thinking when I first read about the Box. This lifted my hopes a little. And that table with the remote dog is a direct throwback to the toy stores when I was a kid in the 80's.
Been a ToysRus kid since the 70’s as well, I can’t wait for my favorite store in the whole world to come back.

I used to work at KayBee Toys in the early 1990s and we had those tables set up near the front of the store.

It would be great if Toys R Us could buy back some of their old stores. The one in my city became a golf supply store. I can't even look at it when I drive by. Hurts too much.

How do you see it better as compared to their standard store or even their Express stores which I think is kind of similar right? Because for their Express stores, the toys sold are pretty selective. I work at Target and just looking at that, I can say that Toys R Us is going to have a difficult time coming back if that is all they are offering selection wise. That is basically the same exact selection as any Walmart or Target. I want to see a big comeback for Toys R Us but they really need to start landing some exclusivity deals quickly or they are gonna fall back down again behind the bigger box stores, not to mention online.
Yes! Looks like they have Hot Wheels diecasts, so I’ll definitely come back. Hopefully soon they can get some NASCAR diecasts in there. Maybe early to late 2000s perhaps??

Hopefully some open in Florida. There is a building at Palm Beach Gardens FL that looks pretty good to move back into that Toys R Us left. But i would love for them to succeed again.

Hopefully we'll be soon on the list, cause Buffalo isn't that far from you all, and we had 3 TRUs I know the one store by me has been bought by Reymore & Flannigan as an outlet store but we've plenty of choice locals for pop-up TRU. The funny thing is we didn't get our first TRU until around the time Tiger Force came out. Growing up we had K-Bee, Child World, and of course K-Mart and Sears had great toy depts., and smaller places like Woolworths w/ the lunch counters for our Toy shopping. It was late in the game & K-Bee finally left in the mid-late 90s. I think kids need legit toy stores cause places like this are immersive as w/ the play stations which I think are great for the kids. Thanks again and keep up the great work and one question; so what you guys walk out with? LOL I've a feeling Predaking found a new home. lol

It’ll take people going there to buy toys instead of Wal-Mart or online shopping.
These Toy boxes need to be creative and offer things that are exclusive to them.
I collect vintage carded/boxed Star Wars and would think it would be cool if these Toy Boxes had a real vintage toy section (loose or boxed of any vintage line).

ha. the first time I saw that fortnite figure I said to myself it looks like firefly. I should have bought it but I didn't. I thought the price was a bit high at game stop but I can't find it anywhere else just yet. Great to see the store and I do hope they come to my area soon. The only thing I would like to see more is a wall full of GI Joes on pegs.
If they have better competitive prices this time around and online options they might be off to a good start.

I miss the Highway market. I remember the first toy I got there was a remco universal monsters Dracula. The last was an Optimus Prime on my birthday. I really don’t think it’ll ever come close to what it was. Toy aisles now are so homogenized. I remember going into an Eatons’s or a Towers or a Woolco and being overwhelmed. Toys were piled on top of each other, it wasn’t so sterile.
