watched this movie on christmas and it was so wholesome. the christmas element had far less impact than i expected, aside from the baby jesus thing. i also agree with your opinion on miyuki’s storyline and had the same opinion at the end. it feels like everyone got a proper resolution except for her. justice for hana because DAMN, i feel so bad for her. i like that her mission to find the parents instead of going to the police was inherently flawed too. it really adds depth to her character
This was the very first Satoshi Kon movie I watched many years ago after hearing so much praise about his works. I went in not expecting a whole lot as anime standards aren't much to write home about in a lot of cases but to my surprise this movie felt very soulful and just full of heart w/ a tinge of looming tragedy. The pacing of the movie is great and the storyboarding/editing skills of Satoshi Kon is very well renowned. This is also probably his most grounded work which IMO makes it hit even harder. The main trio is very likeable and their moment to moment interaction is engaging even when they're just bickering w/ each other lol. Each one of em feels irreplaceable for the big picture, I mean even when the supposed weakest character is written this well in terms of personalization and depth to her then I can hardly complain.
It's on my list of movies to watch. It does sound interesting for a verity of reasons. And I do understand how it is easier to be sympathetic towards someone whose problems were created by chance and circumstance, rather than choice.
