Great circuit but I wish they didn't change it. That long back strait was epic, on my bike braking from 270kmh into that hairpin at the 150m board I'll never forget. Turn 1 is also amazing - hitting that bump at 170kmh was a rush!
i went on a solo RV trip to NZ a couple of years ago. One of the highlights, I snuck in the side gates in my big branded RV, and tried to get onto the track. Couldnt. It felt like Sandown to me. There was an echo to it - a racing echo. Not all places have that... I did also do two timed laps in the RV around the Hamilton street circuit layout, but they werent the same feeling. Puke is / was the queen of NZ racing. Her time has gone. She was glorious.
We certainly have our own Heroes and Memories in the States, but listening to these 'blokes' reminisce about their time here translates to ANYONE that has the Motorsport Gene anywhere in the World! Thanks, guys!!
That 1996 event at Pukekohe was the first time I saw V8 Supercars live as a kid - we were up on that hill somewhere! One of our most treasured family photos is one of me, my late nana and Murphy & Peter Brock in the paddock that weekend. Pukekohe is a special race track and it will be sad to see it disappear. Great to see Paul Radisich again, he was my dad’s favourite driver and we loved watching him try his guts out for DJR. Once we moved to Australia, we went to the Briggs Motorsport workshop at Bowen Hills before Triple 8 bought them and Paul gave us a tour and had a big chat with my dad about life. New Zealand motorsport has an enduring link with that place, and it will be like Oran Park closing here - the heart and soul of the sport will be changed forever.
Such a cool clip of 3x NZ V8 legends of the sport. I felt Paul was shafted by 888 as being a testing mule to set them up for 2005. If he stayed longer he (Paul) would of benefited from their testing and development. Will miss Pukekohe! I was fortunate enough to do a track day a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it! Its such an awesome ballsy track!
Really good for the experienced drivers to reminisce, but as leaders what are they going to do about this and racing in NZ? NZ is a window of where AUS could be going.
I'm not a gamer or anything but I know tracks around the world exist in the virtual world be it driving games or serious simulators.. Has this track been mapped for such a thing? If not someone needs to get out there pronto and map it and put it in the track archives so that it can live on for developers to incorporate before it gets torn up. Cheers
I guess it shows how they have torn down the popularity of touring cars in NZ and AU, From the greatest motorsport with Legends and Icons to garbage, Sad to watch.
Pukekohe park raceway should be listed as a national heritage area and should be protected. I've never seen huge crowds there for horse racing, LOL !!! Wouldn't it make much more sense to relocate the horse racing track. It's not rocket science........... WAKE UP AUCKLAND COUNCIL, IT IS PART OF YOUR "SUPER CITY " !!!
