White Belt, 38 years old, 1st comp in 6 weeks. I'm really nervous and insecure. This episode came out un the right moment. Thank You guys! Love from Argentina
Much love brother, first comp is always tough but you gotta jump in to swim!
How did it go?
Old triathlon coach here. From my old sport, you keep your intensity, but cut back in the time and days applying the intensity (taper) somewhere between 1-2 weeks for big events (Half and full Ironman events) , and somewhere between 3-8 days for small events (Olympic to sprint distances). Rest, hydration and nutrition focused. The differences are going to be the individual, of course. Everyone will peak and maintain their taper at different levels and go through their taper differently, you are going to have to experiment a little to get what is right for you. For the comp, focus on what you know and are successful at, nothing fancy, solid basics. Give it your best go and take notes on what worked and what didn't, adjust for the next comp. Great show, thanks!
White belt, 48 years old, had my first competition 10 days ago. I had a few team mates that "primed" me for my competition, meaning they painfully crushed me again and again for 3 months prior to the comp. Got gold in gi master 4, bronze in no-gi master 2, silver in no-gi absolute master 1. My mates trained me "so well" that I could not feel forearms on my neck, nor the weight of the boys in the absolutes. Love you my mates!!!
Standard taper strategy is to maintain intensity while dramatically reducing volume. It's something I'm unsure of. Balancing the idea of intensity maintenance with mitigating injuries
That really gave me a new perspective… it was a lot of fear using my grips too fast being aggressive and then gassing out… but just surviving with him gave me new confidence
Streched, smoked weed, and chilled out day before my 1st comp, Took Gold & all of my opponents had a 5 pound advantage
Unique approach.
Awesome Gordon
Tell me you are 10th planet without telling me you are 10th planet.
Smoking in overall is a very stupid thing. Think about what it gives to you .
You guys are hilarious. Loving it.
Listener from across the pond. Appreciate you guys.. keep doing what your doing those subs will roll in im sure.
Really enjoying these podcasts. Refreshing, great sense of humor and down to earth vibe on the vids🤙🏽
Thanks for taking the time out of your day to create really good listenable content
Thanks for supporting the show!
Perfect timing lads
Let us know how you went with the comp
I really learnt so much not even the actual fight which I dominated lost to a stupid sweep… just the prep and getting over demons and going to dark places in training where u really wanna give up… don’t care that I lost made my jiujitsu and me as a person much better… it’s a beautiful art this things when u find a new gear or a new level in yourself… belts and medals are garnish
Fine! I subscribed! 😂
You are officially in the Brotherhood!
I just subscribed today😂
Legend! You make the brotherhood stronger!
My 1st competition I was a 3 stripe white belt. I'm 5'7 and weighed 165 and 47 years old. I lost down to 148 to qualify for 150 class. Then nobody showed in my age group and I had to compete in 30-35 year old class. I was dehydrated and got super sick and got beat...terrible way to prepare.
Brahs love ur podcast… just my 2 cents had my first comp at white belt 43 yrs old…. Brah there’s value to just sitting on your bike in the off round or really getting tired before u go… dunno about the general public but I really got used to being tired af thanks to my coach… and that state of mind brings out the best of my jiujitsu…. Just being tired stops me from using my strength and just using technique… and it really blows away the jitters… so that guy doing assault bike between rounds was really not wrong… I have choked as well being too tired but really made me realize that I just hv to rely on my technique and not panic… just gt my blue… just a long and interesting journey… but considering I’m 43 and competed in masters 1… did ok just a silver… I think my coach is on the right track
I just love the journey things can be hard… but I’m an old school guy if it’s life style just hv fun if u wanna compete need to tune diet training and lifestyle… and even then need to dig deep and face ur fears…
34 y/o White belt training ~7 months, 1st comp in about 6 weeks - decided about 8 weeks out and i needed to lose 3-4kg, otherwise people would be 2-3kg more and i dont want to get bigger so I'm just staying very hydrated and just cutting out refined carbs.
I'm fully prepared to go, make mistakes and get smashed - but i want to give it a go and feel that adrenaline, I can't imagine it will be much harder from competition class, those guys are trying to kill each other sometimes 😂 I am expecting to have to control breathing and not get too anxious beforehand though!
Appreciate the knowledge cheers boys!
I like secret handshakes. I like fun podcasts.
I’m in the circle😮
Not sure if this is mentioned in another video, but which programs via the app would be recommended to use leading into a comp? I’ve watched your other video about tapering and 30% reduction in training volume, etc. Thanks!
We will be releasing a specific comp prep program very soon. In the meantime try Muscle Cardio on the App.
@@bulletproofforbjj Great! Thanks for the quick reply and excited to see the new program!
I think I'm going to train Monday through Friday still just no hard rounds just little rolls if any just working technique
would love to come and train when I’m in Sydney if u will have me
My first bjj comp is a disaster. At the time I was new to bjj and only train about 3 month ish. I decided f it n just jump to the fire. Somehow won bronze because there's only 3 people participating. Got armbared n rnc-ed. Got smoked basically but people congratulate me for I wining the bronze. It was a whack.
First comp is always a tough experience.
What is rnc-ed?

I say just dig deep I had a shark tank where I gave up to 3 months white belt…. The next few days my 3deg black belt coach gave me 12 rounds of five minutes misery… I didn’t give up…
🍻
Fine you got me, I'll subscribe. Until TH-cam for some random reason decides for me not to.
I’ve been training for 5 years I’m a 1 stripe blue belt. I’ve been wanting to compete but I’m 240 and scared I will have to fight someone whose 300 and 6’5. I’ve tried to get Down to 220 and it’s a struggle I’m not that fat just always been a bulky heavy strong guy. I’m about 6 feet tall. Any advice
Just enter that comp. You will be surprised you might end up rolling your physical twin
Dylan has also gotten Nike to fold and bow the knee
And rest is good 2-3 days
First time I competed, I didn't feel like I deserved a 3rd place medal. Because I won through via walkover, disqualification, submission and points. But later realized my second competition regardless of how you win; you still won because you showed up and took the time to train, roll, cut weight and discipline. Second competition took third again but made a huge comeback after two back to back losses. Won through via guillotine.
BTW My first competition I was robbed my first match. I won through points and the guy I was versing bitched and moan to the ref and gave the win to him. Anyways.. that guy never even made it to the finals and quit half way through the tournament. Loser.
Its a tough process but its worth it.
Btw I had to lose 2.5kg in 3 hours in the sauna I only made weight after taking a pee😂😂😂I learnt never cut weight at my age ur never gonna make it just got licky
