This is called blue-eyed soul. These guys were the best. Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. They were magic together. And remember this is done live. No auto-tuning crap like today. And the songs had meaningful beautiful lyrics. Other great songs by them is "Unchained Melody", "Soul & Inspiration", "Just Once In My Life", "Ebb Tide", "Rock & Roll Heaven" etc.

When my high school sweetheart was in Vegas she went with her mother to see the Righteous Brothers in concert. Bill Medley came down off stage, took her by the hand, and took her up onstage to sing a love song to her. I've forgotten what song, but I'm SURE she remembers. Yes. she was that beautiful and to me she still is.

Bobby & Bill at their best, with just a tidbit of help from Phil Specter and his incredible Wall of Sound orchestration.
This was the most played song on American radio of the 20th century; over 8,000,000 plays in just 35 years, blowing away every song played on the radio from the previous 65 years.

Lol. They didn’t ‘blow away’ everybody. They didn’t take over the #1 spot until 1999. Overtaking the Beatles “Yesterday”. Then they lost that most played title in 2019 to The Police “Every Breath You Take”.

The story goes that when Hatfield and Medley were starting out they were booked in a black club in Southern California. When they walked out on stage the crowd started booing, Medley {the taller one} said "Hey folks, won't you give us a chance?" The crowd calmed down and the boys began to sing. After a couple of songs a young soldier stood and yelled "Brothers You are Rightous!" Thus they became known as "The Rightous Brothers". And you are right Ms. Millie, They really were a class act.

Bill is still singing, and I have a ticket to see him in October!!! I am a Medleymaniac from 'way back to 1964. He's just so great. Look for some of his newer stuff, too. He released two blues albums in 2007 and 2013. And look for the videos of Bill singing his own compositions, "Little Latin Lupe Lu' from the '60s, and 'Red Dress' from the '90s. You said you loved the sound. That was achieved by Phil Spector and was called "WALL OF SOUND" or "SPECTOR SOUND". Spector was a completlly crazy man who died in prison in 2021 for murdering an unfortunate woman, but he was a producer's producer. To attain the Wall of Sound, Spector's arrangements called for large ensembles (including some instruments not generally used for ensemble playing, strings, woodwind, brass and percussion), with multiple instruments doubling or tripling many of the parts to create a fuller, richer tone and the conglomerate of session musicians later known as "the Wrecking Crew". For example, Spector often duplicated a part played by an acoustic piano with an electric piano and a harpsichord. Mixed well enough, the three instruments would then be indistinguishable to the listener. According to Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson, who used the formula extensively: "In the '40s and '50s, arrangements were considered 'OK here, listen to that French horn' or 'listen to this string section now.' It was all a definite sound. There weren't combinations of sound and, with the advent of Phil Spector, we find sound combinations, which-scientifically speaking-is a brilliant aspect of sound production." That is why there are so many background singers. Phil thought if 4 were good 15 or 20 would be magnificent. Cher was one of the background singers who worked on this piece she is one of them back there.

I remember this song from my childhood as my Ma was a big fan of theirs and had some of their albums. That being said, I also remember this song in the original Top Gun movie. However, if I think of Julia Roberts, the song that comes to mind is always Roy Orbison's song Pretty Woman.

Bill Medley is still performing with Bucky as "Righteous Brothers." I saw them live last year. Bobby Hatfield died in the 90's. Bill was still dancing...

Considering this song has been played more on the radio than any other song in history, it would be on anyone's rock legend list.

They truly were one of the best duos in the 20th centure - thanks again!!

Fun facts: this video was produced by Phil Spector. Phil's assistant at that time was a young Salvatore (Sonny) Bono who placed his then girlfriend Cherlyn Sarkassian in the backing choir. She is much better known now as Cher. Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were not related, but got their name after they performed near a military base. A young black marine complimented them afterwards "That was righteous, brothers"

Not 50’s, dear. The Righteous Brothers were a hot ticket in the mid-late 1960’s when I was a teenager.

M- Keep on digging through the '60s & '70s...that was an amazing time for popular music! One of the dominant bands during that period was Three Dog Night. They pumped out hit after hit, but none better than their cover of "One" by Nilsson. The bass in that song is so deep and pure that I've used it as my benchmark for every piece of audio gear I've purchased since 1968! There are a number of recordings of live performances, but the official studio recording ( th-cam.com/video/M8JO51TLGgg/w-d-xo.html ) preserves 100% of the bass goodness. :-)
