My phalaenopsis all are mounted because they thrive when mounted compared to potted. I live in Indonesia and we mostly use blocks of fern roots for mounting orchids.

I've been wanting to mount my orchids since I'm starting to run out of space to place them. Do you water them the same amount as you would when they are potted?

    • @niagara6015
      @niagara6015 ปีที่แล้ว

@@juanfajardo1295 No, mounted Orchids require more regular watering. How often you water will depend on the climate you live in. I live in midland South Africa which has cold winters (no snow) and hot very dry Summers, in summer I spray the roots daily with rain water and soak the Orchids once or twice a week depending on how hot it has been, in winter the Orchids come inside.

nylon stockings/ pantyhose cut across the width, not down the lenght make the very best ties. Cut thin strips. When stretched, you have a thin, strong, long lasting tie that will not crush or cut roots. Also not too visible & it stretches to long lengths

  • @kiyuemadkick

I feel the growing on mounts is simpler than potting. You can have orchids live on humidifiers. The root system our orchids produce are environment sensitive. Thats why potting aerial roots is not recommended. They also change colors like air plants in fact!
You can train all of your roots to grow like tillandsia(air plants). Roots dont always have to stay wet they do dry out just to collect MORE moisture from the air.
Little tip its best to mount seedlings or when new vegetative growth is showing.
The ones that like rain mist them often thats depending on the individual orchid.

I love mounted orchids, everyone should have at least one in collection. So true though, the watering requirements are higher. That keeps the total number of mounted orchids in my collection limited, even with growing them outside year round where I can be messy with the water hose. But not too bad if you keep the number down to a level one is comfortable with without it being a chore like you said.

Sourcing a mount and other supplies could be challenging! Thank you for your video, MOG!

I have a mounted Oncidium Twinkle and it looks lovely in bloom on the wall, next to the guitar and the bass 😍
A con is, as you say, that it dries out too fast and oncidiums don't like that. In summer the moss is dry in a few hours.
Now I have to decide if I let it be or if I pot it

I have a small orchid that I almost killed. I think I trimmed the roots too much when I got it, so it struggled to get water. The large leaves wilted and died. It flowered at least twice though.
I've had it mounted to a piece of wood with moss sitting in some water (like less than a cm) for a week or two. It's doing well, new leaves and roots are growing. I think I'll reduce the water amount soon after it establishes it's roots more.

If you have low humidity, you could definitely soak them every morning for a few minutes, and if they are completely dry in the afternoon mist as well. Im in a pretty high humidity area here in the deep south, so I also spray mine until dripping every single morning. I have been thinking lately that perhaps I should do this twice a day, only because my apartment doesn't hold as much humidity as outside and the heat can be intense during summer! My winters, once a day is perfectly suitable. I hope this helped a little! Good luck!

It looked nice for a few weeks and the first leaf started drying. I realized that I had cut too many roots so it didn't get water when I sank it in a bucket. However, this orchid has lived its entire life in a pot, and i’m worried that if i try and transition it from the pot to the mount, i will end up stressing it. Is this something i should worry about, and, if so, are there steps that i should take to prevent my orchid from undergoing stress? Thanks!

I personally don't like the look of mounted orchids. I unmounted my Aerangis and planted it into a terrarium. Who knows, it might be a phase. I might end up liking mounted orchids in a few years.
