  • During the Society of Hematologic Oncology (SOHO) 2021 Annual Meeting, Know AML spoke to Tapan M. Kadia, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, US. We asked, How has acute myeloid leukemia treatment in elderly people changed in 2021?
Kadia outlines how lower intensity therapies, such as hypomethylating agents, compare to traditional chemotherapy in terms of toxicity and efficacy, as well as the VIALE-A trial, where venetoclax was shown to have significantly improved response rates and overall survival. Finally, Kadia explains the future of acute myeloid leukemia treatment, including stem cell transplants and genetic analysis, allowing treatment regimes to be best tailored to patients.

Hello Sir my father has been diagnosed with Aml and he is 60. His risk markers are pending so we have started him on Azacitidine and Venetoclax. But I'm really hoping for BMT. Is it possible at this age? Will he tolerate induction chemo? He is stable for now with good CBC report.

My sister was just diagnosed with AML. What is chromobidities? She is on the Vidaza Injections and the chemo pill as she is 74years old. I worry about her and also worry if it’s the genetic type. She hasn’t asked, I take her to the doctor, but don’t want her to worry about her son or siblings. Thank you for your info.

Thanks a lot for your very elaborate explanation which really gave me a ray of hope. I am from Pakistan and my only daughter Hina lives in Houston Texas. Can an appointment be set with you to find out if my treatment is in the right direction. Dr Ayaz Mir of SHIFA International Hospital Islamabad is looking after my treatment. Stay Blessed always

    Dear Doctor....
I am a RN...ive a patient 92 years young. who up until she started jadenu ( iron build up) was doing ok...she took the med only 9 days...i had to bring her to emergency. Which was horrible experience. ..i will tell you my patient never came back 100 percent....i bring my patient to get blood transfusions...the blood she was getting was actually good for 30 thru 35 days..she would have transfusions every 3 weeks. ...now the blood expires in 13 to 20 days ..last transfusion lasting 5 days her HGB was 6.7...dr..my patient wants to live little longer...she dont want hospice care. In which this has been discussed..you know and i know there would be no more transfusions...dr ...please what can i personally do or say to oncologist to help my patient....also they infusion center nurses have upped from 275 to 300 blood going in ...in which that was tried 8 years ago..my patients body couldnt handle it.....please dr help me help my patient....shes weak... barely eats....ive got her on supplemental drinks...dr i just dont understand why giving my patient blood almost ready to expire...the more ive to take her for lab work then transfusions takes a toll on her health...please give me some advice...

Please visit a medical oncologist. There are low dose chemo options I suppose and doctors consider various factors before advising. I have noticed Azadine with a low dose not causing any side effects. Please do not delay and visit a doctor sooner. I pray for her speedy recovery.

I am 71 and on mild chemo since past one year. Going for BMT in a couple of months. Pray that I find a donor in my siblings.

Every study is about elderly AML. What about children?

Or middle? I’m 53 and in 3rd yr of remission but you’re right! Its usually about elderly because aml is more adults...children is more ALL or CLL..Daniel aml is usually adults 65 or over..I just am one of the ones who is younger but got it..when I go for my bloodwork.I’m one of the youngest there!
