I love your video ...I had to replay a few times, even had to do that 180 degree to get my hot water flowing. I loved you calm voice....it helped..I am a 74 year old single woman...boy was I proud..thank you
I have watched hundreds if instructional, how-to videos over the years. This may be the hands down best I have viewed. Absolutely exceptional level of detail with simple, yet precise language and near perfect videography. Kudos galore!
What a great instructional video. I went to Home Depot with my old cartridge and they gave me a new one free of charge because Moen has a lifetime warranty. Installed the new one within 10 minutes and works just like new. The best part is that the whole repair cost me $zero. Thanks again for your great instruction.
I am a training video producer for some of America's largest corporations and feel that I must compliment you on your excellent video. One of the first things they taught us in camera school was that "close ups" tell the story, and your close ups really told the story. I changed my cartridge without a hitch. Thank You, C James
What a high quality, easy to follow video. I replaced my cartridge in literally 5 minutes without consulting the instructions. I watched this video twice and knew exactly what to do. Excellent video
This was great. No skipped steps. No glossing over the details. Instructions like remove the shower thingy are useless. Sure wish I had watched it before paying the plumber $225 to do this. I am inspired!
This video absolutely saved me! Most of the videos didn't mention what to do when you get it all repaired and there's no hot water! Thank you so much for mentioning that!!!!
I searched for help changing my Moen cartridge and came across this video. You insightful, easy-to-follow instructions helped me accomplish the task with minimal effort. Thank you for taking the time to produce this video and save me valuable time and money.
This video was priceless! I didn't have a clue what to do, and the local plummers weren't answering their phones. Everything came off without a hitch. Thank you.
Thank you so much for posting this. Not only did the video help to replace the cartridge but your mention of the Lifetime warranty saved me $75 from my local plumbing supply. I called up Moen and they shipped me a cartridge for free. Thanks again!
Excellent job! Instead of guessing if you have the cartridge installed correctly. Hot water on the left and cold on the right, there is a notch on one side of the brass valve it should be at the top position. Always works for me!
This video was a big help to me. I took it even farther. I bought a cartridge repair kit at Home Depot for under $5 it had different sizes of pins and all of the rubber fittings along with the plastic tool to loosen the cartridge. I changed all the rubber on the old cartridge replaced it and my shower worked fine. I even have parts left over in case one of my other showers has problems.
My plumber laughed at me when I said TH-cam can show me how to fix my faucet. Thank you so much for this video. I love your slow, measured speech coupled with a step-wise instructions. This video saved $147 in labor fees.I didn't bother asking how much they were going to charge me for the part. I appreciate you and your time. Now, on to fixing the bathtub spout. ;-)
Hello sir just want to say this was not a good video it was a EXCELLENT video you took your time and this video was to the point thanks and keep up the good work.
Thank you for making this. The only thing you forgot to add was to use some plumber's grease on the cartridge. I watched several videos and found that tip. You saved me a bundle. THANK YOU!!!
Great video! Moen sent me a 1225B replacement cartridge after our shower started dripping, (Thanks Moen!) and watching this video was a lifesaver! Had I tried to install it using the included directions, which was basically Post-It note crammed with 5 languages front and back, I would have flooded the neighborhood.
Great, clear, to the point, no wasted time with unedited chatter. Very calm manner helps too. Thanks for viewer's tip to use WD40. After 15 years of non-use the cartridge required help being removed.
YOU ARE A MONSTER! Super job with this video. Mine didn't have the washer that fit back over the screw but otherwise your tutorial was bang-on accurate. Thank you for posting!
It's mid 2021 and this video from 2012(!) was a life and money saver! Thank you, @iScaper1 and when I went to subscribe to your channel, imagine my joy in seeing all the Pac Northwest vids! It's my dream to move up there one day...
I am not a certified plumber, but I am a pipefitter/welder, and I wanted to relay a tip if they are having problems removing the cartridge and do not have a removal tool.If you have an access panel to your diverter valve, heat it up with a simple home depot mapp gas torch for about 8-12 seconds and the cartridge should soften slightly and slide out easily. If you dont have a torch, simple applying a lighter to the underside of the valve for around 30-45 seconds should do the trick. Metal (brass) expands while heated.
You're way more experienced than me, I'm just a diy homeowner. I like your idea but have a fear that melting the plastic components of the cartridge. might make it harder to remove. However you said about 8-12 seconds with a torch and 30-45 seconds with a lighter, so as long as one follows your advice , and does not overdo the torch or lighter your advice would be a lifesaver.
Sweet, finally found the right one and it was perfect in details. Thanks for putting this up, just changed mine, no problems. Just an FYI, the Home Depot salesperson told me that these catridges have a lifetime warranty from Moen, just need to call them and they will send you a free replacement one.
This video helped out a lot when I was fixing my leaky shower. I have one tip: the old metal cartridge in my shower would turn with the plastic nut but would not come out no matter how hard I pulled. To pull it out, I put the screw back into the end of the stem and then used a hammer to carefully pry the cartridge out. I used a block of wood to pry against and put the claw of the hammer around the head of the screw. It worked like a charm and as long as you are gentle, you won't bend the screw.
Good instructions! I saw below some guy said the cartridge costs over 70 bucks but I got a plastic one for 22. Works great! I replaced the O-rings about 15 years ago so when I saw the vid I was happy to know a cartridge was available.
Other commenters have said that Moen has a lifetime warranty on the cartridge. If you still have the old cartridge you should be able to get a replacement free.
Great video thanks! Some points i wish were included though. 1. Tie the hinge pin to something so you don't drop behind the wall and lose it. 2. Mine never had a washer with old or new cartridge - some must not come with that. 3. Clean pipe with wire brush before putting new cartridge in. 4. Lube new cartridge rubber parts with plumber's grease before putting in. 5. My cartridge had 'HC' stamped on the plastic. This should be facing right side up. 6. The gold cartridge stem has two flat edges. One side has a notch in it. This side should be facing down/smooth flat end up. 7. When you put the black plastic handle adapter back onto the white plastic key stop and adjustable limit stops, make sure the ridges on the back of the black adapter are tp the left of the tab on the limit stop. This should save you from having to disassemble and rotate anything.
Damn, wish I would have read this comment before I just spent over an hour losing my mind. Mine didnt come with a washer either nor was there one with the old cartridge that I took out to replace.
Me too. Her comment helped me more than the video . I'd still be mucking around trying to get the hot to be on the correct side. Her comment saved me a lot of frustration. If he covered the subject, I must have missed it. I see that this thread is 4yrs old in 2022 doesn't matter. Just giving credit where credit is due. THX
Thank you! I have the plastic valve cartridge version of the exact same shower. Bought a tool to remove the cartridge but could not get it out. I bought 3 different Danco (direct replacement for Moen) cartridges that looked like they could/would be a match, couldn't see to be certain. The plastic tool in the one that I thought was closest finally allowed me to break the seal between the cartridge and the valve body. I even opened the right cartridge. It works great! Yea!!!
Your video was very helpful. The instruction were exactly what I needed to give me the confidence to do the job myself. The leak has completely stopped; no more running water. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you very much for the detailed and easy to follow video. I have wowed my husband and fixed our issues with our faucet. And saved a large enough amount of money that I am not even going to disclose not having to have the plumber come out :) Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!
Thanks for the bit about testing the hot water at the end. I know I would have forgotten this, and I'm certain that I would have gotten it backwards and had no idea how to fix it. Good stuff :)
Thanks so much! My package didn't have that plastic thing but I was able to do it anyway. Very clear video and instructions. Saved me from calling a plumber!
Thank you very much for this. My shower units at present are O.K. but to have this information for when I need it is invaluable. I simply can't afford the trades' fees for doing this work. It's gone out of sight. Thanks again.
Been waiting 2 days for a plumber - then saw your GREAT video !! Here's a tip - Turn the selector knob straight up, 12 -o-clock , remove, and compare to the new one. If you got a good eye, you can install it in the correct orientation for Hot-Cold.
Excellent video. I was nervous to try this myself, but after watching your video, it was a breeze. I suggest adding one step though, and that is flushing the line before you put the new valve in. Mine leaked after I installed the new cartridge and I was very discouraged, thinking I had done something wrong. Another site suggested flushing the line with valve out, which I just did, and that solved the problem.
Thanks for the great video! You did an excellent job of explaining and demonstrating the issue and the solution. My husband and I watched your video and then was able to fix our leaky guest bathroom shower/tub.
Great great video! Thanks for sharing! We had a small leak in the bathtub and followed your advice to get it to stop. As well, thank you for outlining up close how to align the cartridge and to ensure it’s properly installed. No more leaking water 💦 (Out here in Nevada we can’t afford to waste any water).
Thanks for this. Watching it gave me the confidence to replace a Moen Positemp cartridge in my downstairs bathroom. Went pretty much as you said but I had a tough time putting the retaining clip back in. The cartridge must not only be straight, as you demonstrate, but it also must be pushed back as far as possible. I probably spent ten minutes trying to get the retainer clip in until I realized it. I was out by about 1/4 inch. It has to be flush.
Thanks for the great video. The close-up shot of the how the clip goes in was very useful as that's where I was stuck. When you talk about the "ears" of the cartridge, it would be helpful to show what you mean by that. I had to rotate the cartridge 90 degrees as I though you had to have the open part at the top for the clip to go in. For my cartridge the round edges ended up being top and bottom rather than side to side to line it up properly. Once I figured that out it was super easy.
Thank you so much for this video. Our shower head was dripping for a long time and I fixed it yesterday thanks to a trip to the hardware store and watching this video step by step. so happy didn't have to call a plumber! great video!
I also had to turn on water after removing cartridge to remove debris. I had broken pieces of gasket that kept getting in the new cartridge causing it still to leak. I ran water for 30 seconds then pulled some old gasket pieces that were in new cartridge. Everything was fine after that. Thanks for video.
Great instruction, easy to follow and very thorough. You were so careful about cleaning up the muck behind the plate, I would have thought you'd mention doing the same for the plate & handle. Wish I'd known about the lifetime warranty first!
***** Moen will replace the cartridge one time. Contact their customer support. The only issue is that it took about 10 days to arrive, so if time is an issue, it may be easier to purchase it.
Thanks a million- this really helped me out, and nice camera work to boot! I'll mention that I did have to go and buy the puller tool to get my cartdrige out- it was over 25 year old, and there was no way it was turning with only that plastic nut. Even with the correct tool, I was supprised how much torque it took to pull that thing out.
My only quibble with this excellent video is at the very end. You said that if the hot and cold are reversed, you should rotate the valve body 180°. There's a simpler way to accomplish the same thing. Remove the knob and use a pliers to rotate the valve shaft 180°, then reinstall the knob. I've done this several times in the past and it works fine.
Hi iScaper1. Les here from Victoria BC, Canada's Westcoast . Your video is certainly well done & easily understood, I just finished doing that exact job, on the identical Moen faucet. Your video made it, a lot easier than 'winging it' & as mentioned by others your video is great quality with very good visuals as to do the job properly. I appreciate the help.Cheers ! & best regards from Canada's Westcoast, Victoria BC Vancouver Island.ps:I had to flip the cartridge 180 so thanks for that info too
Thanks a lot iScaper1, I just changed it and your video helped me much. Since I'm a very "how-stuff-works" kind of guy, before inserting new cartridge I figured out how the water mixing goes, and put it in the right way first time. Muchas gracias señor Scaper.
Tied dental floss to the clip. Great idea. Took a bit more tugging than you needed to pull the cartridge out but I did it! About cleaning the mildew and other gunk before reassembling... be sure to have spray cleaner and paper towels ready because THE WATER IS OFF. Yup, made it all the way to the sink with a sponge then 🤔😶🙄 Thank you for taking the time to make this video, for progressing methodically and speaking clearly. 👍🏼👏🏼
Great solid video, thanks for the details. One thing I do on these and similar jobs is to put something over the drain to stop that screw that was just dropped. If saving something from going down the drain, the extra effort is well worth the time.
Hi. Thanks for your nice video. I have the same faucet in my shower. It had been leaking badly, but I didn't have the knowledge to fix it. Your video gave me the confidence I needed, lol. It went just like your video. In fact, it worked so well, I did kitchen faucet, too. Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. A tip if its an older cartridge, I had to pull mine really hard as the rubber on the end had gotten caught on a pipe, make sure you check the inside of the pipe before putting the new cartridge in.
Good video - thanks iScaper1. I have two comments. First, there are two types of Moen cartridges that will work: 1225B and 1200. The 1225B uses plastic and the 1200 uses brass (and is a little more expensive). Second, be sure to insert that little spacer between the cartridge and the plastic handle. Without the spacer, the you may not be able to fully close the valve. Unfortunately, the spacer does not come with the new cartridge but is included with a new handle.
I wonder if you have something in the valve body that makes them leak. The o-rings on the new cartridges should seal off. I would carefully inspect the valve body with the cartridge out and see if you can see any problems.
This was great. Your instructions were perfect and the close-up video was extremely helpful. I was sure I would need to call a plumber after I had it apart, but your video made it easy to complete. Thank you.
Thanks for the post. Like others, I couldn't make sense of the pictorial 'help'. Because of you, I got it right, first try. Note: are you a landlord or something? The faucets in my home are a hell of a lot cleaner than that one shown. You put it back together with a dirty handle. However, you at least you DID a good job of cleaning the gunk from under the escutcheon! Can we mention here that Moen, at least in Canada, does not charge for new cartridges? If you buy their product once, they stand behind it, like, forever! One of the last few Great Companies to deal with.
Thank you for posting this! I couldn't figure out the proper position to be able to replace the retainer clip. The package the cartridge came in only had pictorial directions, and they weren't much help. Yay, water's back on!
Exactly what I needed to know. The cartridge was okay but debris from unrelated work clogged it. I took it out once 10 years ago and I did not remember to twist the valve back and forth to loosen it. The demo kept me from going into an all out panic attack.
Thank you!!!!! I was trying to yank it out without using the plastic piece that came with replacement. I was about ready to use a really big hammer. My wife thanks you also.
Thanks so much this video, it saved me a lot of headache! I specifically like the calm point by point way you describe each step, no hype & goofiness. I did have a very hard time getting the old cartridge out, but my little local hardware store 'rented' me a tool that with a lot of elbow grease it did the job. I started this venture with VERY little plumbing knowledge; this was my 1st time replacing a shower cartridge. I only ran into one small wet problem...when I put everything back together and tried the hot/cold it was reversed so I went about taking out the locking pin to turn the cartridge 180 degrees BUT in my enthusiasm I forgot to shut the water off first. Needless to say when I pulled the locking pin out then new cartridge came flying out and I got drenched!! Good thing I have a sense of humor, chalk it up to another life's lesson learned and one I'm positive I won't repeat! Thanks again!
I usually like to take the plastic nut that they send with the new cartridge and twist the old cartridge back and forth a few times before removing. This seems to break it loose from the valve body.
Good video. THanks for posting the part number. A few pointers though for those reading...First, you do not really need to clean the debris off with a razor. You'll just wind up scratching the gelcoat on your shower. A wipe is fine. Second, there is a foam ring behind the escutcheon plate that should either be replaced or bead of caulk should be put on the old one so you get a watertight seal. Third, if you get hot and cold water after the install, but they are reversed (you turn to hot an get cold and vice versa), you don't need to remove the cartridge as you describe, you just need to reposition the clear knob 180 degrees (you may have to turn the shaft a bit to get the shaft to align with the knob. THis accomplishes the same exact thing as rotating the cartridge. And finally, as others stated, put some silicone grease on the cartridge before installing it.
Very good and detailed. I just replaced mine - looks exactly like yours. Fixes the leak but now rather than turning 180 degrees, hot to cold, it only turns 90 degrees. So it gets hot but not all the way hot. Any suggestions on what I did wrong?
Great video! No fancy titles, annoying music, or lengthy story about the shower knob he had back in 1983. Just gets right to the point!
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback.
I love your video ...I had to replay a few times, even had to do that 180 degree to get my hot water flowing. I loved you calm voice....it helped..I am a 74 year old single woman...boy was I proud..thank you

Thanks so much. Well done video. I have these older model Moen shower valves and was glad to find a video covering the cartridge change.
Great to hear!
Thank you. I could not shut my shower OFF today and used this video to help me change the cartridge. 10/10. You save me a large plumber fee.
Great!
I was a complete novice in this area and just completed this operation successfully. Extermely helpful. Thank-you.
Excellent job! Instead of guessing if you have the cartridge installed correctly. Hot water on the left and cold on the right, there is a notch on one side of the brass valve it should be at the top position. Always works for me!
Thanks Doug for the tip on how to position the cartridge.
Excenent Video. Replacing my cartridge was a snap. saved a bunch of money by not buying a new shower deverter.
Great, thanks for watching.
No chat or filler, just very detailed and to the point. Thank you for posting this.
Thanks!
Great video! Clear step by step instructions and no loud thumping music. Thanks for posting!

I concur with all the comments, you ARE precise and Your Attention to detail was so professionally done! Thank you

This is a terrific "how to" video. Thanks for making cartridge replacement a lot easier.

Here's a tip -
Turn the selector knob straight up, 12 -o-clock , remove, and compare to the new one. If you got a good eye, you can install it in the correct orientation for Hot-Cold.
Great tip, thanks for posting.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the clear and simple instructions. Fixed my own bathtub faucet leak today and saved myself the repair cost.
Thanks Victor, I appreciate the feedback.
Thank you sir, took me maybe 15 min to fix a shower we haven't been able to use for 6 weeks. Much appreciated
That's great, thanks for the information.
Thanks for the great video! You did an excellent job of explaining and demonstrating the issue and the solution. My husband and I watched your video and then was able to fix our leaky guest bathroom shower/tub.
chandracxiong
That' great, thanks for watching.
Thanks Les for the comments. You sure live a beautiful part of the world. We visited last year and were very impressed.
Thanks Don. The plastic nut is a lifesaver. I appreciate you taking time to leave feedback.
Thanks, I'm glad the video helped.
Good information, thanks for posting.
Good points, I did clean the plate and handle with a clorox wipe but didn't mention it.
Thanks Ben for the feedback. Can you provide a model or part number for the puller and where you bought it?
Sorry, I don't have the box any more so don't know the model / part number. I bought it at Lowes for ~$15. It looks like this imgur.com/7K8yjBa

Looks like a handy tool to have for a stuck cartridge. Thanks for the link.
Hi Joe, No need to use sealer or silicone between the cartridge and valve body.
Thank you so much for this video, saved me a $200 plumbing bill. Took longer to clean the gunk out beneath the plate than to replace the cartridge.

That's great, I'm glad the video helped.
Yup, made it all the way to the sink with a sponge then 🤔😶🙄
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, for progressing methodically and speaking clearly. 👍🏼👏🏼
Dental floss securing the clip is a great tip, thanks for posting.
Excellent! Thanks for taking your time to make this. Fool-proof step by step instructions.
Well done! Just the right amount of detail to inspire anyone to do the work themselves. Thank you so much.
+John Bednarek
Thanks John for watching.
Great solid video, thanks for the details. One thing I do on these and similar jobs is to put something over the drain to stop that screw that was just dropped. If saving something from going down the drain, the extra effort is well worth the time.

Great tip, thanks for posting.
Nice tip, thanks for posting.
We had a big problem , with that helpful slow detailed video we managed to fix the problem, was easy & thank you very much.
This was great. Your instructions were perfect and the close-up video was extremely helpful. I was sure I would need to call a plumber after I had it apart, but your video made it easy to complete. Thank you.
excellent video. very nice detail. one of the best how-to videos I've ever seen
Pretty sure Moen has a lifetime warranty on cartridges here in the US also.
How much was the repair kit? I just bought a new cartridge but the repair kit seems to be a good way to go also. Thanks for the tip.
Thank you for posting this! I couldn't figure out the proper position to be able to replace the retainer clip. The package the cartridge came in only had pictorial directions, and they weren't much help. Yay, water's back on!
The cartridge needs to be in the correct position or the clip won't go in. Sounds like you figured it out. Congrats.
Exactly what I needed to know. The cartridge was okay but debris from unrelated work clogged it. I took it out once 10 years ago and I did not remember to twist the valve back and forth to loosen it. The demo kept me from going into an all out panic attack.
Thanks for the feedback.
just saved another person from a lot of grief! Thanks!
+Roger Tijerina
Thanks Roger.
Thanks, I appreciate you leaving feedback on how the video is made. It's nice hearing from a professional that I'm on the right track.
Thank you!!!!! I was trying to yank it out without using the plastic piece that came with replacement. I was about ready to use a really big hammer. My wife thanks you also.
Aaron Chew same as me hahahaha
This video saved me at least $200.00. Thank you Sir!
Great, I'm glad the video was helpful.
This video was GREAT! Very clear instructions...you saved me money I was able to do it myself.
Thanks Juli. Sorry to hear you got soaked but congratulations on doing the replacement yourself. Next time I'll bet you don't get soaked.
Great video-slow and precise! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! This was a big help. I had to use the Moen cartridge puller to get my cartridge out but otherwise it worked just like your video.
Very good and detailed. I just replaced mine - looks exactly like yours. Fixes the leak but now rather than turning 180 degrees, hot to cold, it only turns 90 degrees. So it gets hot but not all the way hot. Any suggestions on what I did wrong?
thanks for the video tip. without your video i cant fix my shower. thanks again.
Very well put together. You have given me the confidence to tackle the job. Thank-you!
+Chuka Umunna
Thanks Chuka and good luck.
