The birthday thing! I was a bit obsessed with my birthday when I was younger but I didn’t care if someone I was not so close to forgot about it, it’s just a day 😅 It’s been 3-4 years that we’re not celebrating it anymore for religious reasons and honestly I’ve never been more freed from the social pressure than when I started telling people « don’t get mad if I don’t wish you a happy birthday, we don’t celebrate them » 😂 And on the marriage thing, I’m not so sure anymore but I think that statistically people who wait too long to get married tend to get divorced more than people who married early in their relationship, I’d need to check again but on a personal level I’ve seen countless of stories about people that had been together for years and years, sometimes decades, had taken all the levels of commitment possible, and divorced a few months only after getting married. I guess OP has a point when they say some people view marriage as a kind of cancer that’s imprisoning you, and maybe it makes you do weird shit once you get married because you get all weird psychologically 🧐
I’m not even sure anymore if marriage is the cause or they were already not compatible but went through with it anyway. People really need to marry someone that feels like a true friend because times will get tough and tough isn’t very attractive or romantic so it needs friendship vibes to sustain.
