    Remarkable how the interior of Amiens Cathedral was built from 1220 to 1269; only 49 years. They had the technology the builders at Cologne were unaware of (the human wheel). Also: Cologne wasn't even stared until 1248.

    I am a bit surprised by the stumped and narrow nature of the two towers of the facade, as well as their difference in height. Was this a mere functionality choice for the bells? And that only the inner sanctum was crowned with a high spire?

    Quand j'étais petit garçon, j'ai rencontré une fois une énorme tortue luth de la taille d'un ballon de football, et la bouche de la tortue puait parce qu'elle avait des morceaux de fibres textiles et des animaux morts dans ses dents. J'ai apporté la tortue à un vieil homme de notre rue qui était soldat. Il l'a aidée, mais la tortue est morte au bout de quelques jours. Je l'avais dans ma chambre, sous le lit, mais comme il sentait si mauvais, mon père m'a ordonné de le remettre dans la rue.

    La reconstruction d’une cathédrale me commence généralement pas par le chevet et le chœur??🤨

    • @MylesZhang
      @MylesZhang  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oui, vous avez raison. La reconstruction commence généralement par le nef et puis le chevet. Mais Amiens est différent parce qu'il y'avait l'ancienne basilique situé au même endroit que le chevet du futur. Plutôt que démolir l'ancienne basilique et puis commencer par le chevet, ils ont completé le nef, en train que démolir le chevet. Ça les ont permetté de finir le cathédrale plus rapidement.

    This may seem like a stupid question but how did they filter out rain water?

    • @MylesZhang
      @MylesZhang  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good question. Above each flying buttress, a narrow groove is carved into the stone. A lead gutter pipe is embedded into this groove. Water falls onto the sloping roof, is channeled into the gutter above the buttress, and is finally ejected ono the ground on the outward facing side of the flying buttress. In this picture, you can see the gutter. It is the grey strip of lead the runs diagonally across the photo: images.freeimages.com/images/premium/previews/7281/7281931-flying-buttress-support-at-amiens-cathedral.jpg

    • @TimSlee1
      @TimSlee1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's impressive. I read that they also put gargoyles at the end of these gutters to act as water spouts.
      Also, how did they filter the water during construction so that it didn't leak into the nave?

    • @MylesZhang
      @MylesZhang  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Before the construction of the wooden and slate roof in the 1300s, the vaults above the nave, transepts, and choir was effectively the roof for nearly 50 years. The angled sides of the vaults temporarily directed the water to the corners/walls, from which it descended to the ground via the tops of the buttresses. Again, this was a temporary measure before the completion of the real roof. Here's a pic of the inside of the roof: mylittleplanet.edublogs.org/files/2017/05/Amiens-Cathedral-62-1me1w98.jpg

    • @TimSlee1
      @TimSlee1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wow. History never fails to surprise me. Really impressive engineering for the time, then again, they had to learn from failures prior to the construction of these monuments. It's sad to hear that many cathedrals around Europe have been destroyed for new developments and sometimes just to spite the citizens.
      Also, might I ask what software was used to make this?

    • @MylesZhang
      @MylesZhang  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you, Tim! I used a software called Sketchup to create this model; it is free to download and easy to master. This model is also open source so anyone is welcome to view/download it here: 3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model/fe8d49c2-3d71-4fd9-9b29-1b6cf3056f90/Amiens-Cathedral
