Handheld Entries Done Right | Super Mario Land 1 & 2 Review (GB)
Every entry in the classic Super Mario Bros series has earned its place in the franchise, each with its own gameplay appeal and take on the franchise. While it sparks endless debate about which one is the best, it also creates a launching-off point for spinoffs to take these core appeals in their own directions.
No other game embodies this idea more than the The Super Mario Land series, which was created specifically for the Gameboy and sees two entries that are derivative of specific Mario games, but add their own unique flair to their respective formulas.
How do these entries stack up today? Are Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins worthwhile experiences on their own? Or are they doomed to suffer the fate of many GB games as inferior conversions of their console counterparts? Find out in this review of Mario Land 1 & 2 for the Nintendo Gameboy!

The End of Super Monkey Ball | Super Monkey Ball 3D & Banana Splitz Review (3DS & Vita)
มุมมอง 2.1Kปีที่แล้ว
The 2010s saw unprecedented leaps in the fidelity of handheld systems like the 3DS and Vita. Handheld entries of games could now resemble their console counterparts much more as a result. With games like Super Monkey Ball Jr and Super Monkey Ball Touch & Roll being impressive handheld conversions, entries on these new systems could be pushed even closer to the fidelity of the Gamecube games. Bu...
Unapologetically Exceptional | Sonic Riders Review (GC, PS2, Xbox, PC)
มุมมอง 7432 ปีที่แล้ว
Sonic Riders has always been one of the most "out-there" titles in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It slipped through the cracks as one of many titles released in the year 2006 to commemorate the franchise's 15th anniversary, although it quickly garnered a reputation as a racing game that was too different and difficult to learn. That's the experience I had, even many years after its release. Si...
A Diamond in The Rough | Super Monkey Ball: Step & Roll Review (Wii)
มุมมอง 1.2K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Banana Blitz defined the split between what the Super Monkey Ball franchise wanted to be. A shift away from its arcade origins for a more casual appeal with its motion control gimmick alienated more people than it attracted, and by 2010 this new era was in full swing. After 4 years of mobile games, Super Monkey Ball Step & Roll marked the series return to home consoles as a sequel to Super Monk...
Doubling Down | Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz/HD REVIEW (Wii, PC, Switch)
มุมมอง 1.4K2 ปีที่แล้ว
The Super Monkey Ball series' fall from grace often gets attributed to one Wii game which changed the identity of the series for the next decade and beyond with its focus on motion controls alongside a new art direction, Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz. Suffice to say, when an HD remaster of that same game, Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD, marked the grand return of the franchise after a seven...
How NOT to Make a Collectathon | Super Monkey Ball Adventure Review (GCN, PSP, PS2)
มุมมอง 1.6K2 ปีที่แล้ว
Super Monkey Ball Adventure attempts to be the epic conclusion to the classic Super Monkey Ball saga. But instead of an arcade game from the likes of SEGA and Amusement Vision, newcomer Traveler's Tales was thrown into the ring to try their hand at crafting a brand new Super Monkey Ball game. What resulted was a mix of the classic ball-rolling primate action and something akin to a collectathon...
A Portable Paradigm Shift | Super Monkey Ball: Touch & Roll Review (DS)
มุมมอง 1.3K2 ปีที่แล้ว
2005 saw the release of not only Super Monkey Ball Deluxe to combine the Nintendo GameCube originals into one package, but also another portable entry on the Nintendo DS with Super Monkey Ball: Touch & Roll. Taking some creative liberties with the established style and being designed around the gimmick of touch screen controls, could this new entry bring some new energy to push the series forwa...
One Step Forward, Two Steps Back | Super Monkey Ball Deluxe Review (Xbox, PS2)
มุมมอง 2.1K3 ปีที่แล้ว
The Super Monkey Ball series had a lot of momentum after the release of Super Monkey Ball 2 for the Nintendo GameCube. But despite some rumors, SEGA did not follow it up with the anticipated Super Monkey Ball 3: Banana Crazy, instead bestowing the legendary GameCube duology onto Xbox and Playstation 2 fans. Super Monkey Ball Deluxe on Xbox and PS2 combines both Super Monkey Ball 1 & 2 alongside...
The Snow Bore of Realism | 1080° Snowboarding Review (N64)
มุมมอง 7153 ปีที่แล้ว
After Wave Race 64 and Pilotwings 64 proved to be high quality simulators for the time with design that still makes them fun today, Nintendo wasn't done. In 1998 they would release one final first party realistic sports title for the system, 1080° Snowboarding. A bit out of the box for the developer's usual appeal, but can this game utilize the N64's analog control to really push the console an...

Modern Tropes vs. Arcade Classics | Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania REVIEW (PC, Switch)
มุมมอง 1.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
On the series' 20th anniversary, Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania puts the fan favorite arcade classic titles Super Monkey Ball, Super Monkey Ball 2, and Super Monkey Ball Deluxe through the lens of modern gaming tropes to answer the question, "What made Super Monkey Ball so great?". With reimagined visuals, new controls, and the same old levels that captivated GameCube players in the first place...

The Original Wii Sports | Pilotwings 64 Review (N64)
มุมมอง 6683 ปีที่แล้ว
Nintendo using their hardware to create unique gameplay experience is nothing new. Ever since motion control gimmicks on the Wii, it has been one of their defining traits that keep their games fresh while standing out from more powerful competition. But during the days of early 3D gaming, the analog stick was as much of a novelty as motion controls were, so games meant to showcase the Nintendo ...

Simple Beauty or Nostalgia Bias? | Super Mario Bros. Review (NES, SNES, GBC, GBA, Arcade)
The gbc versions of smb and smb the lost levels aren’t well executed all just for that 1 fetal handicap wich ruins the gameplay experience, the screen crunch. It just makes me wonder why on earth nintendo just did down scaled and polished those graphics to fit on the smaller screen. Now for years i liked and i considered the snes versions of those games more fair. to play, But since i also was finally able to beat smb the lost levels on the famicom, i am fine with that version as well😁
4:27: A moustache is the easiest way to make a recognizable man face using the smallest number of pixels.
Everyone hates this game!!!! It’s a harder version of part 1
Simple beauty.
Thanks for the review, I'll go back over three decades and consider getting it now!
In my opinion, this game is Hella underrated. I know it's hard, but it's much easier that those garbage mario maker levels
While I agree with your general claim that the SNES graphics are better than the NES ones, I think there are a couple issues brought about by that version. Firstly, the NES version's backgrounds were consistent within each world but distinct between worlds. Each world had its own sky background color. The SNES version changes this so that the backgrounds are based more around what type of level you're playing. Sky levels look similar, airship levels look similar, water levels look similar, etc. This makes the worlds feel far less like distinct worlds in my opinion. The second issue is that it feels less like a play. I wish they could have had more detailed backgrounds while keeping some of the cloud and similar sprites in the original. I also find it annoying how the question blocks are no longer nailed down; that fit the play aesthetic perfectly. While it isn't a huge deal, I also think some of their choices, like changing Bob-ombs from black to blue and Bloopers from white to pink, are stupid and make them less threatening. Otherwise the SNES graphics are definitely an improvement!
3:44 the maybe is because you can play as Mario or Luigi in 2p
The All Stars version instead calls into question whether he'll be successful, so it was probably meant to mean that from the beginning. It was just phrased poorly.
this was a really cool and well made video to stumble on
Just beat this game ♥️
I think it's over hyped, though
46:29 They did port the Famicom Disk System game to the Gameboy Advance!! "Super Mario Bros. 2" as "Famicom Mini" for the Gameboy Advance… Japanese exclusive… I actually have it in my collection as well as the Famicom Disk System OG and the Super Famicom "Super Mario Collection"… personally I like the OG over the SNES remake… but I'm OK with the fact that I'm a "Super Player" 😁😁😁😁
Nah if u had NO fun with this game then its your fault for lacking imagination..this game is goated as hell!
Nah if u had NO fun with this game then its your fault for lacking imagination..this game is goated as hell!
Another great bundle review of these games, I do also appreciate the little mention of the manuals that’s a nice touch most overlook. “Mario has a complete body count” is also the best out of context line here
Was the GBA Mario Bros. released before the GBA SP was out, or before it became the designed-for system? The backlight (and lack thereof with the original GBA) led developers to change colors because of how dark orange without a backlight shows up when front-lit. I loved this in-depth overview, amazing work!
Subbed! 🔥🤘🔥🤘🔥🤘
You know what I'm gonna say... Banana Rumble review when?!?! (Although I did see you made a game recently, so that's cool.)
GBA version lets you play as Luigi, so that's my pick.
Man this is golden. I've watched this on repeat while playing through the game. Slowly getting more and more knowledge about the game and getting better at it as I went along. The game surely is frustrating, but I had fun with it in the end. It's been a goal of mine to complete this game for a long time and finally stuck to it. And you're the only one I've found that actually goes a bit into gameplay and control mechanics on a level where I could use it in actual gameplay. I know that's not the main goal of this, but I guess it's a nice side effect of sorts :P
My favorite video game of all time.
You definitely can track what levels have secret exits and which ones you’ve gotten in the snes version. Other than the ghost houses, every level which has a secret exit has a red dot. On top of that, every level with a secret exit only has 1; this means that you’ve got every exit if the level with a red dot has another level coming out of it. Well there is one exception… that one part in the forest of illusion where there is a secret exit that crosses over another secret exit path. But yeah it sounds convoluted but it’s honestly very easy to understand once you’ve noticed it. There are only a few exceptions to this rule, and they’re too few to ruin it imo (the forest of illusion section and the ghost houses like I said).
My favorite is the All Stars version of 3. I liked the visual upgrade, but the ability to save your game and go back to previous worlds seals the deal.
I love this video, its SO full of content
its not actually a dream, its a dream world accessed by dreams, as shown in BS Super Mario USA
oy, whats with that remark about the vita having no games?! it has more games than the PS5.
Only thing I suggest if you do want to try the Lost Levels for some reason is to play the SNES All Stars version
I definitely think the early half of Mario world is boring, but Butter Bridge and beyond is really damn fun. That’s why I think Mario 3 is better
I played The Lost Levels VIA All-Stars and I knew it was gonna be hard as a kid. And I seen the Famicon version when I learned about the Doki-Doki Panic story in early 2015. And I now only play the All-Stars version because I wanna play as Luigi and I don't wanna play as a Green Mario.
I was a kid Born in the 2000s and this was my very first game I played as a kid and I think playing Nintendo games exclusively actually made me more of a black sheep when I went into school because the kids were getting into overly violent gun games (I dont know what the kids were into in 2009). But I think Super Mario Bros. 3 is a far better Mario game than Super Mario World (which I also played VIA Super Mario All-Stars).
When people ask what my favoeite SNES Game is, its Super Mario All Stars PLUS World. Luigi also looks updated in the world in this version to match his aooearance in 2 onward.
I love your reviews! Subbed. This game has grown on me a lot in recent years.
It's ridiculous to me that the makers of the first Mario game decided that the game's difficulty needed to be cranked up to "Bullshit". I'm glad we ended up with the Mario Brothers 2 that we got otherwise Mario Brothers 3 would have probably been ignored.
one of the greatest reviews of this game on TH-cam, great job! Ilove listening to you
48:35 Supposedly, according to Chris Pratt when talking about being cast as Mario for illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, when he thought about what was the first Mario game he ever played, he specifically was referring to VS Super Mario Bros. Arcade as his first Mario game.
Peak cinema
And absolute masterpiece
You should continue the 2D Mario marathon and review the new super Mario Bros series and Mario Wonder
How has this funny and interesting review only so much likes, it is perfect i love it?!
The reskinned Japanese game was called Yume Kogo (Dream Factory). Doki doki panic was a subtitle that roughly translates to "heart pounding panic", used to indicate that the game was exciting for the consumer. That subtitle was used in many Japanese games at the time. Yume Kogo also started out as a sequel to the original Super Mario bros. game
“Could Super Monkey Ball get its Crash 4 moment?” Do I have good news for you :)
Thank you, god! I’m so freaking glad that I didn’t play this game of the Super Monkey Ball series because in my opinion it’s the WORST game of the entire series overall and for many reasons! I’m not going to play this game anytime soon in the future! Another awesome review once again! Keep up the good work, Pixel Powerstar! I’m only going to do a Let’s Play with Super Monkey Ball Adventure for only the Party Mode and Challenge Mode but not the Story Mode after put in the cheat code and unlock everything from the get go!
I’m definitely going to be doing a Let’s Play on this interesting game of the Super Monkey Ball series on the mGBA Emulator! And I’ve got a strong feeling it’s going to be one of my favorite games of the series despite being less powerful than its console counterpart but still a super fun, pretty good and solid game overall in my book due to its flaws and problems in the end!
Good review, learned a lot
Your generation gets bored too easily.
I'll take the NES LIbrary over the PS5 Library any day of the week.
This game was so awesome in the 80's coming from Atari games to Nintendo it was amazing. I was like10 when i played Mario for the first time and I was blown away. My family was not close at all and when we got the Nintendo and played mario we were all engaged and just playing together as a family. Some of my favorite childhood memories was playing the first Mario.
