How to Install Beadboard to a Ceiling Yourself - EASY!

  • If you're looking to cover up some ugly popcorn ceiling or flawed ceiling, then applying beadboard may be your best bet. Even without popcorn ceiling, beadboard (also called wainscoting) can make any space look elegant.
    Since my camera turned off during part of the hanging - let me explain that fastening the beadboard onto the ceiling is as easy as applying liquid nails (or other silicone) and nailing it into the ceiling with 2" brad nails. Preferably aiming for the ceiling joist, but not critical for every nail.
    For the New Ryobi Nail Gun - Click HERE 👉 amzn.to/2YLjCKK
    Not only is hanging beadboard along the ceiling much easier than scraping off nasty popcorn and re-texturing, but it's also much better looking. Scraping off popcorn doesn't add much value to a property either because although no one likes it, everyone expects it to be scraped off, it's not an "upgrade" anymore.
    The trick to hanging this stuff is to have a handy nail gun by your side. I can't imagine hanging this up with a hammer and nails.
    Beadboard is easy to cut, light to hang, and very appealing. Give it a shot!
    FYI, some people call this pinboard or wainscoting as well.

    @The2Harks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Im thinking about doing this to my basement ceiling. Its the best option. The drop ceiling was trash and theres wires going everywhere. So i was going buy the big panels and put it up just like that. Is there a good paint and tape (or something) i can use to cover up the seams (if they show, where one panel ends and another begins) even though the panels are white im going to paint it again to hide any nails or flaws in the panels.

    • @KellyConcepts
      @KellyConcepts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Hark, I would put a 1x3 or 1x4 piece of wood to cover up the seams and just paint it to match the rest of the ceiling. I don't think drywall compound or tape would cover it up long term and it'd be a lot of work for something that might not last.

    We did this in our kitchen, dining and living room. The ceilings was so ugly with poor patchwork from replacing fixtures and such, there was a long crack from where a very large beam had been, and what was left was popcorn. My husband spent time scraping it off in the kitchen and dining room then realized (thankfully) that it wasn’t necessary in the living room after all. So we just put the beadboard up over the popcorn, and it is perfectly level throughout all three rooms. It is a lot of work but it looks beautiful! Especially in a large area like ours. It’s so vintage and charming!

  • @mattdaddy9947

    Did you have to put any strips under neath to attach to? What would you recommend for large room? Still put the spacers in there?

    • @KellyConcepts
      @KellyConcepts  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Matt, I didn't put any strips under this beadboard. Typically I would apply an adhesive like liquid nails so I'd definitely recommend that for a larger room - along with 2" nails. I made spaces between my sheets of beadboard because I wanted to try to use only 1 piece of material. It'd be best to push these against each other. Good luck!

    • @KellyConcepts
      @KellyConcepts  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, for a larger room, you may want to put in some real framing nails 8guage into the trim pieces - at least on the ends. Just so the little finishing nails don't get pulled out with all the weight (although I've never had this problem).

    1. You did not show the installation of the plywood. 2. That wainscoating is not "spec'd" for ceilings it is for walls. A building inspector would not approve that job, unless you show how to fasten the plywood. I hope you did not just use adhesive.

    • @KellyConcepts
      @KellyConcepts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yea sorry, I thought I had my camera on recording but didn't during that part of the install. I typically use liquid nails adhesive and some 2" 18ga nails to fasten it (mostly hitting the joist). Then the trim for additional support and looks.

      Hi Jensine! Yes it should still be safe - this particular house is 1979 which was when they phased out asbestos (although there is still risk).
      Even if there is asbestos, it is only harmful when it is 'friable' meaning when it goes airborne. So if I were scraping this then I would definitely want tests but nailing something to it is fine. But definitely take all precautions you can!

    I wanted bead-board ceilings in our renovated basement bedrooms. Just floor joist to connect to, no drywall. My husband is a
    Mechanic and had done an amazing job framing these rooms and hanging these 4x8 sheets for little carpentry skills. He used the biggest flat head screws he could find because my suggestion of brad nails just didn’t seem logical to him because they have little to no way to hold the weight. It isn’t terrible having all the exposed screws ( I still need to paint it) but before I do, and suggestion on explaining if and why brad nails would work? I’d share a picture but I don’t see the option to. Thank you

    • @KellyConcepts
      @KellyConcepts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My camera was off during the actual beadboard install unfortunately, but I popped in dozens and dozens of brad nails into each panel and most of the time I would use liquid nails to adhere the panels to the ceiling. Using a wide head screw is a great idea though and something I'd consider doing around the edge and place the trim over that. Glad yours turned out good!

    Omg, who puts popcorn in the bathroom??!?!? Why did you need to do it in bathroom before. Great job on that laundry room!

      The bathroom was of the garage conversion and there was obvious damage from mice in a couple corners. So instead of repairing a lot of sheetrock, texturing, etc, I figured 1 sheet of $20 beadboard would cover it all right up! Attic is clean and mice are gone btw! 😉 thanks for watching!

    Probably the worst how too video in a long time, and the music is about as pleasant as a root canal
