In 1978 I went to see Steve Martins' Wild & Crazy Guy tour in Dallas. Steve Goodman came out as the unannounced warm up act. I had seen a few shows on PBS with Goodman, and was very pleasantly surprised to see Him. I felt like I was the only one there who knew who he was. Everyone was there to see crazy Steve Martin, not some unknown singer, and yet within a few songs His incredible charismatic stage presence had them in the palm of His hand. It was very impressive, and He did a very entertaining 30 min set. I'll never forget it, He made such a impact in His too short life. A few years later Steve Martin came on the Johnny Carson show and mentioned that He was doing a fund raising show to benefit Goodmans' wife and kids. I didn't know He was sick, or that He died. It was a shocking blow to hear. You feel so robbed when someone could have had a long career is abruptly gone. So sad. At least His music remains.

Singing and playing in two different time signatures when he opened up! My head just exploded! THen he like suddenly notices there are people and he just casually says hi. His hold on innocence is sadly missed. I remember him calling Willie Nelson such a nice fellow never realizing Willie was a great guitarist but only because he worked like an ole hoss to get Steve’s technique s down. He probably sat up all one night teaching him for free! People on the street would congratulate him if a big star sang one of his songs, he would never even know if he made any money. He was like this little fragile angel only on the earth fora while.

he also took time to tune the e string toward the end .

Really appreciate the "hold on innocence" comment. His genius poetry and song-writing was only eclipsed by his guitar playing. What an exceptionally decent human being. Gone much too soon,. Thanks for sharing the gift with the rest of us, Stevie.

Nobody had anything on Steve Goodman. His guitar playing was over the top as was his songwriting and vocals. And that smile in the face of adversity was electric.

I was fortunate to see him perform twice, in Vancouver, BC back in the late 1970s and again a couple years later. The first time he opened for John Prine ans the second time it was just him. I even met him briefly as i stood out on west georgia street about twenty minutes after the show ended. He was a sweet guy and a performer you'll never forget. As the Billy Joel tunes says, "...only the good die young."

We should all make sure we tell our children and grandchildren about Steve Goodman so that he will not be forgotten. Gone much too soon, Steve. But thanks for the gift of the memories.

Steve Goodman opened for Steve Martin many times when Martin made his living doing stand-up, so they must have known each other well. Hope you've taken the opportunity to listen to more of his music, because Steve Goodman was truly one of the greatest singer/songwriters ever.

Robins are pretty scarce where I live in Central Florida and most of the time when you do see them, they’re skittish and flying from tree to tree.
I just have several land in my neighbor’s yard and they were foraging for insects. This song so perfectly describes how they move, it was the first thing I thought of once I saw them moving about.
This is such a great, memorable and perfect song.

Saw Steve a couple of times - like the parable about the diamonds in the dry creek bed, so glad I did, so sad I did not see him many. many times more. Woodie Guthrie, Leadbelly, Bob Dylan - all great American songwriters - classics. In my opinion, Steve eclipsed them all. God bless. And THANK YOU for posting this gem - it was the first song I ever hear him play on a radio interview. If anyone has a version of his Marty Robbins', Big Iron - or his version of Seven Spanish Angels - I'd give blood for them.

well I had to think about it for 2years to come up with that
in Collidge they taut us to call that a Grand Conversation
as in it goes on & on for a long time in small increments w/ time for ponders between additions
that was pre-internet or it wouldn't have had the connotations of potential profundity it had then
I got a bit of irrelevant chuckle at the thought so I thought I'd send it yr way for prompting it
