What apoor sensibility have some commentators , if some find tghis genious of piano playing not so good I consider Iturbi a genious ,more than others with more fame BRAVOOO
Jose Iturbi is one of the most scarce pianists that could actually see the story the composer was telling........ and interpreted it to the full. His fingers danced the whole story, the melody on a piano.
Mr. Hofman thank you for Iturbis videos, its a pitty there are not recordings of Iturbi and Higinio Ruvalcaba together, they played together in the 50s in Los Angeles, Iturbi is one of the most wonderful pianists, thanks
21 Sept.2011 .. just saw him in a movie 'Midnight Kiss' with Mario Lanza! He played the panio also with his sister, amazing! Enjoyed it all .. shame we don't hear more of him.
I like him more each time, I hear him, and I am especially fond of listening to him playing Albeniz. Even though he was born and raised i America, his playing has that true flamenco-like feel. Iturbi and Ciccolini are top spanish interpretors. (The one, spanish american, the other, italian).
Have always had a high regard for Iturbi and he's certainly worth learning from, I have his CD's on the APR and Pearl labels. He played with his hands in sort of a contracted position, just the opposite we see from Horowitz. I'm sure you know more about this, and maybe there's something along the same lines in your book. Thank you for posting this.
We're fortunate to live in Iturbi's birthplace of Valencia, Spain. There's a well-known conservatory here named after him as well as an annual piano competition which draws contestants from all over the world. Interestingly, this year's event produced no first place winner. Instead, they awarded two pianists second place. Maybe they were waiting for Iturbi's ghost to perform? For the curious, it's possible there may be archived recordings of his performances here which have yet to be digitised. It would be worth a look for sure.
a couple of years ago I would have heaved you up on a rail with my own hands, tarred and feathered, but after I just watched the Chopin movie again, I am glad to confess: you are SO RIGHT. THAT passion Mr. Iturbi displayed in the film score is not heard anymore nowadays from any pianst, not even from my all time fave Horrorwitz. WHERE to get the original soundtrack "A Song to Remember" I wonder? Good job RCA was alert and immediately edited the 2 record album with him which soared to #1 .
Iturby did the sound track to A Song to Remember. They were not Iturbi's hands during the real playing. They were Erwin Nyiregyhazi's hands because Iturbi's hands were deemed too chunky to fit Cornel Wilde's lean body type! Can you imagine "hand-synching" the Wintry Wind Etude, The Bb minor Scherzo, the Ab Polonaise, etc.? Iturbi played them magnificently. I first saw the movie in Catholic school - 1956 The 3 to 8th grades saw it and you better had payed attention and no bathroom visits either!
About Iturbi being underrated: He was as much a showman as a high-rate classical musician, and that combination: A hollywood showman, occasionlly charmingly hammy, - and a dead-serous musician, has probaly been too hard to swallow. Too hard to place for some people.
Dit noemt men isometrische spiertraining.
In his heyday Iturbi's great rival was Rubenstein. Rubenstein was regarded as the more "serious" pianist since Iturbi had 'gone Hollywood.' This was a bad misjudgement since Iturbi was clearly Rubenstein's equal. Maybe even a bit better.
I agree with fartlestucks that Iturbi was a natural musician and great pianist, but a technique like his has also taken many thousands of hours to develop. 60 years ago when I was a teenager, I went 17 times to see the film "A Song to Remember" for which Iturbi played the sound track, so it was interesting to watch this video and SEE him play this piece not just the actor who was Chopin in the film pretending to play. (But I love Rubinstein even more, sorry billyguns), Chopinissimo.
Obviously it is excelent. but the funny thing is that this video has better quality than other videos made with color XD. Another cool thing is that you hear 'classic' steinway piano sound, exactly as newer videos. xD 5/5
What a great pianist. Fortunately we have a possibility to listen to the excellent performers from the past.
Incredible playing, great video. Thanks for posting!
A marvelous musician! Bravo! TY.

its scary that u commented this when i was 4 years old, i am now 16
Ya la tengo.. José Iturbi "Andaluza" Muchísimas gracias..

Dawn Els I agree fully with you
My very first exposure to this piece when I was 12. I went on to learn it and play inspired by this wonderful musician.
Mr. Hofman thank you for Iturbis videos, its a pitty there are not recordings of Iturbi and Higinio Ruvalcaba together, they played together in the 50s in Los Angeles, Iturbi is one of the most wonderful pianists, thanks

Alex Avry .I agree with you
only one maestro of a kind love all iturbi recital
Hartelijk dank,
He literally makes one hear an orchestra- and a piano. Such a great musician!
Love the overhead shot! Nice =)
Fenomenal...!
Otro Rafa de Madrid.

I bet this was even more amazing in person.

There is a CD "les rarissimes de Jose Iturbi" (EMI) of Itubi playing Granados, Albéniz and Chopin.
Please???where can obtain just one of.his.C.D.?Why is it so hard to bye his C.D.s??
@@ameliavermaak8228 I hope you've found the 3 CD set of his recordings on the APR label.

Iturbi was a damn good pianist!
He was born in Valencia, Spain in 1895. The first time he went to America was in 1929, when he was 34 years old.
About Iturbi being underrated: He was as much a showman as a high-rate classical musician, and that combination: A hollywood showman, occasionlly charmingly hammy, - and a dead-serous musician, has probaly been too hard to swallow. Too hard to place for some people.

@Hofman1895 . Then I must have misunderstood something :) He is still super.
Regarding the Fantaisie-Impromptu. . . beautifully played middle section, but why so fast in the outer sections, as if they were finger exercises?
such...clarity...how???!
Do You like it?
Yeah, I really like this one also, but I prefer Yundi Li's interpretation =)
Lolllll
!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I´m sorry, but I don´t like. The 3/4 effect is absolutelly lost at such speed. It becomes a caothic piece at the fast part.
No me gusta nada su interpretación. Acelerada a tiempos , algún rubato mal puesto y mucha rigidez en otras.👎
